@@8799crosby I think you are referring to the 92-93 season, which Mario scored 69 goals in as well. That was a very high scoring season. 95-96 had 8 100+ point scorers. 92-93 had 21 100+ point scorers. Clutch and grab era, according to most started in 94-95, during which a trap style defensive Devils team won the cup in a lockout shortened season.

The first goal was a perfect demonstration of what made Lemieux so amazing: the deceptive speed to get by Pronger, the strength and size to hold him off (rarely see Pronger look so small/helpless), and then the quickness and accuracy of his shot. Simply unstoppable!
@theodorebelmont79225 жыл бұрын
He does the same thing to Pronger on the hat trick goal. Instead of standing by the net waiting for a back door one timer he goes back into the slot just far enough so that Pronger can't reach him and he's able to one time it and get a clean shot on goal and at that angle that was all he needed to do to put it by the goalie. He was so intelligent too

Lemieux had SO many goals like that, where he just puts the puck in the perfect spot to beat the goalie, or deflects it off of a skate or something. Unspectacular to a lot of people watching, but if you knew hockey you were impressed. He just knew right where to put the puck. Fuhr was baffled after that goal. Lol. He thought he had everything covered. Remember all of his off angle goals from the corner, behind the goal line? Lol He would bank it off the goalies own pads and in the net. Lol

Brian Leetch sorry, Gretzky is truly great but he had his stats padded by playing on a all star loaded team for his whole time in Edmonton. Lemieux was basically he only player on the pens for the first part of his career. By the time the pens got good Mario’s back was already ruined. Same with Bobby Orr, who I would say was better than Wayne as well. brian leetch was overrated!
@amazinmets84395 жыл бұрын
LOL if any player suffered from lack of teammates it was Brian Leetch. He's not "overrated" he is in fact one of the most _UNDERRATED_ NHL defensemen of all time. Jeff Beukeboom played with Paul Coffey and Brian Leetch and said Leetch was the best defenseman he ever played with. Explain Gretzky's numbers in the 90's. There goes your "Edmonton" theory.
@amazinmets84395 жыл бұрын
Funny how you dis Brian Leetch and then say Orr was better than Gretzky LOL. Leetch and Orr were very similar players and Leetch is often thought of as the American version of Orr. Leetch and Orr are the only 2 defensemen EVER to win the Calder, Norris, and Conn Smythe Trophy and Leetch is 1 of only THREE defensemen in NHL history to average over a point per game in the playoffs. He also is 2nd in points scored in 1 playoff season ALL TIME. Yeah, he sure is "overrated" LOL!

Most of these goals are a great example of why you can't compare Gretzky to Crosby. And this was in '96!
@chrisg77315 жыл бұрын
i say this all the time. ever see gretzkys 5 goals vs the flyers to get 50 in 39? every goal would get a goalie yanked today. insane. its not a problem, but people have to understand the difference between most dominant player and best player. gretzky dominated his peers in the 80s more than any player ever (or maybe lemieux). crosby is the best player to ever play the game. in 10 years, it might be mcdavid. thats how sports works. coaching, training, and sports IQ all improve. its not a fair comparison, but if people insist on making it, then thats it. a 3rd liner in the NHL today could have scored 80 goals in the gretzky era.

You're right Chris, sadly in every sport people always have to go on about who's the "goat" but nobody ever takes into consideration that different eras were played with different rules and skill sets

@@Musicrecords10 i have no issue with people trying to figure out the greatest of all time. sports are about competition, right? its just another degree of competition. but my lord, just be intelligent about it. there are so few arguments left to be made about why 87 isnt the best ever. and like i said, in 20 years, there will probably be 3 or 4 guys who could push for that title. mcdavid tops the list.

95-96 season -- Lemieux 161 points, Jagr 149 points, Francis 119 points. Even better line then earlier with Kevin Stevens as center.
@mggailitis72315 жыл бұрын
Genius. He could read a play and execute in just a couple of seconds. That IQ timed with the ability to sense where the goalie was is just off the charts amazing. Gretzky was an amazing hockey player, but a lot of his teammates were really good, which helped ease the burden. Lemieux didn't have the same talented teammates and basically carried the team on his back. Best hockey player ever.
@Nuwings11115 жыл бұрын
Did you not notice his line mates Jagr, Francis, Nedved? Plugs right? Gretzky had 200+ points in 4 seasons. So many excuses made for Mario. Yes he was amazing......but Gretzky was on another level.

Not a penguins fan...im flyers so you know im not being bias. Wayne was a hoax...never got checked so every game was like an allstar game...no serious defense.....mario was by far the greatest player ive seen and its getting close because of sidney. Mario did it all with being checked...having health issues...and shooting on goalis who basically took up the whole net just standing there. Putting him in the same sentence as wayne is disrespectful to mario.
