Whether there are other intelligences in the vast cosmos is one of the big questions of human existence and perhaps of existence in general. Estimates using probabilities almost always portray a universe teeming with sentient creatures. Any implication of human uniqueness seems to contradict basic assumptions of science. And yet, there is no sign of alien intelligences, none whatsoever. Why?

Just because life on earth (especially humans) have a need to expand and explore doesn't mean all life out there in the universe is the same. That need might be a uniquely human thing. We're assuming all intelligent life evolved as aggressive carnivores like us. Might not be the case..
@jjt1881
@jjt1881 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn't have to be like that. They may need to expand out of many reasons, including scientific exploration, look for exotic resources that they lack (like exotic mining from their point of view), a need to evangelize (if they are biologically based), etc. It is not as simple as throwing out expansion just because it is similar to aggressive behavior.

Finally, an intelligent answer! He hit the nail on the head. If there are interstellar traveling beings out there, it is fair to presume that their evolutionary trajectory would have long transcended their organic/biological beginnings. Such beings would have evolved into supremely advanced artificial intelligence lifeforms, propelled by indestructible, immortal, and freely rearranging states of matter that are beyond our imagination, much less our current technology.

@@milotherussianblue3691 Hello Milo! No, my point wasn't that space is void of life beside us, because I'm convinced that it's full of life because of the fact that we exist in space. So the question of life in space is already answered. But it must not be intelligent life and even if there is, they don't necessary must come here. Even if I believe that there have been incidents where et's have been involved (take the Nimitz incident) it's not enough. We .ust have solid proof before we can say something for sure. Cheers!

A lot of cosmologists say that the universe is infinite and if you travel far enough, you'll eventually find another you; no need for other universes. If you think about it, galaxies used to be called 'island universes' and each was seen as individual universes and in a way they still are. To me, it does seem other life is definitely out there due to the infinite size and homogeneously and isotropically structure of the universe. Basic life, yes. Intelligent life like ours? Hmmm. I am skeptical because of the following. This planet we are on is very unique, its weather, its organization, its evolution, our evolution, the primordial soup, the chance of inanimate molecules transiting into even more complex molecules, the anthropic principle events that took place to evolve into us. There are so many specific events that took place that lead us to what we are now. To me, to bring all of these ''odd events'' and contemplate that ''can this occur again''? seems unlikely to me. Our planet took 10 billion years to come into existence from the big bang. 10 billion years! Then another 4 billion years to its present day. Intelligent life only came into existence very very recently. It took about 13 billion years for intelligence to arise. Well, on earth. But I do believe that Earth is unique and I think intelligent life is probably a one-time event. I mean, intelligence like humans have like mathematics, language, music, landing on the moon, and civility; I think this sort of intelligence could have only occurred once because each event that lead up to our intelligence is very specific. Some inventions in history were accidental and for intelligence to arise you need certain minds like inventors. There are probably alien inventors out there but my final conclusion is that I think if we ever saw an alien, we wouldn't be able to comprehend it and as well for the alien to us because each of us went through a very unique evolution.

As Robert Bigelow, the founder & CEO of Bigelow Aerospace has stated, you don't have to look anywhere outside to find Alien Life. It's already here hiding under people's noses. (interview on 60 minutes). Look at these people who have stated that UAP are here, and they don't believe they are russian or chinese: These spacecraft have displayed manueverability that would run circles around Our best AF Jets. These spacecraft have been seen by Air Force Pilots on many occasions: Christopher Karl Mellon, is the former United States Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and later for Security and Information Operations. He formerly served as the Staff Director of the United States Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. Luis Elezando frmer head of AATIP The secret program run by the pentagon on the study of these Unidentified Aerial Phenomena has also made it clear these craft are real Commander David Fravor Top Gun Pilot for the US Navy and 3 other pilots have confirmed that they have encountered these objects during training excercises Former CANADIAN defence minister Paul Hellyer: In 2007, the Ottawa Citizen reported that Hellyer is demanding that world governments disclose alien technology that could be used to solve the problem of climate change: I would like to see what (alien) technology there might be that could eliminate the burning of fossil fuels within a generation...that could be a way to save our planet...We need to persuade governments to come clean on what they know. Some of us suspect they know quite a lot, and it might be enough to save our planet if applied quickly enough. In an interview with RT (formerly Russia Today) in 2014, Hellyer said that at least four species of aliens have been visiting Earth for thousands of years, with most of them coming from other star systems.

My guess is that life is not rare but electronic and rocket technology actually is quite rare. We would not be able to encounter aliens unless they possessed technology equal to or beyond our own. But, for comparison, no other animals on Earth have any technology, and for the vast majority of human history (which has been brief anyway) our kind did not have much technology either, certainly not enough to get off the planet or send out any powerful signals. In addition, it is possible that those beings who acquire technology usually misuse it and end up destroying their own species.

Plane, Fleet of 500, were gifted Antigravity, motors, an enough, rolls of the hardest metal in the Universe, to skin, 6 craft, Hence 1943, takes a yr for the skins to cure, you can circumnavigate the planet in less than a hour, an the skins, are still cold to the touch, Their impervious to cold, heat, laser weaponry, Radiation. They won't be gifted the formula for the hardest metal in the Universe, till 1977. Those 6 craft were, deep in the Milkyway long before, 1977, Today their all out there. In the very centre of Heelliittoog, the Capital City of Venus, is a building, over the main Entrance, on the Fascade, is a sign, sez United Nations, Planet Earth. There are many intelligent animals on this planet, but none of them use symbolic language and doesn't keep records of time. Word is not just a clever noise in our head, it's a symbol, helping us reduce meaning into short forms we can manipulate with our minds and we use to remember things. Language is crucial for descriptive self awareness, animals can develop knowledge only after they start to pass experiences to their siblings. To became self aware means they can describe their body form and environment, this process lead to development of technology allowing species to leave their natural habitat and start to spread to space around them, using other life forms for harvest of food and study of their natural abilities. Question is, how many intelligent life forms invented a word, much less we can imagine probably.

Fermi P makes us worry about the obvious: LHC, overpopulation, A.I., climate. ..but maybe we should be looking at places not so obvious where nobody thinks of looking, places that seem apparently benign. The LHC does not produce anything that does not happen naturally in the universe, e.g. cosmic rays are far more energetic. But, Low energy physics experiments DOES: even deep space is filled with CBR, yet in the lab we create near absolute zero conditions that really do not exist naturally ANYWHERE else in the universe! Are BEC's not an indication that we could be experimenting with a monster? after all we don't fully understand the physics of the universe especially at the quantum level, which is what low energy physics is experimenting with. Yet nobody ever asks this question let alone attempt to answer it.

If an intelligent life, even on this planet, can become dormant, perhaps AI can live like this. We procreate as a means of survival for our species, "survival of the fittest". What if we became so advanced that we were only interested in things that can't be explained or measured and focused on testing theories in controlled environments(i.e., planets, moons, etc.) We would probably limit or reproductive goals to suit such tasks at hand and maybe even eliminate excess understanding the need for efficiency in long-term scenario of dominance(i.e., millions of years). Lots of good comments. I have increasingly been persuaded that we are alone in the Milky Way as a biological intelligent race. It's not just our own exampe: of the billion species on Earth only one has attained sentience -but equally negative is the time problem. Even if numerous civs arose what are the chances it would be within the time frame we've been able to communicate (100 years- about .00000000022% of the Earth's age)? And what super-advanced civ would not send probes or satellites or monoliths or leave a record of their visit? (And playing with rocks in Peru or Turkey a few thousand years ago does not count.) It explains the gulf between biologists and cosmologists over the existence of life. BIologists recognize that our existence is due to a string of unlikely events - several extinctions, exceptionally long periods of calm climate, cosmic accidents, normal accidents, mutations and numerous other factors. Life is probably common since it began on Earth shortly after it formed but for 3 billion years it remained only bacteria.

No one has explored the possibility that Dark Matter is actually swarms of A.I. nanobots most likely living in galactic halos. . Reasons: 1) Galactic Halo provides low temperatures for optimal computing . 2) That's why there is no physical collision with dark mater particles 3) They are tiny, and cloaked to avoid detection, explaining our difficulty there. 4) Solves the Fermi paradox because...yes...they are pervasive. It is entirely reasonable that galaxies should be swarming with intelligence...so...there it is. Also explains why we don't see any on earth detectors. That's not where they choose to live.

you are suggesting that a type of Field must be present because at the end of the day what is intelligence (the i in A.I) ? our entire concept and assumption about intelligence is based on a process that is natural to us ...thinking, with a brain...that is mostly water...and electric processes....in This matter fueled medium, don't forget that. Your A.I. has inherintly human traits so intelligence in dark matter would only have to be part of the story with the dark matter being more of a platform or ''surface'' if you want...but in no way a discernable aggregation state...where anything that we could aknowledge as intelligence could reside. When thinking about those things i believe the most effort has to be put into stepping outside our narrow box nevertheless.

Question? Do you believe that technologically assisted telepathy is possible or impossible in principle? I tend to believe that if it isn't scientifically prohibited then it is eventually a technological inevitability,... which leads me to believe such telepathy will soon be possible in actual fact (less than a hundred years). I would also suggest that it would only be by such means that we could ever be persuaded that some form of General Artificial Intelligence were itself conscious rather than simply being a particularly clever zombie who can pass the Turing Test,... all while having no actual, authentic, subjective experiences. What else would ever persuade a skeptic, or even you, otherwise? And if consciousness can be technologically transmitted, it should be something that can be stored, copied, replicated, manipulated,... maybe even becoming the basis for a whole new form of art expression. And the human race becomes yet another sentient species that disappears into its dreams, rather than continuing to explore existence as it is. It's a better Brave New World,... perhaps the very best of all possible imaginable existences. When does reality lose it's attraction over the Matrix? How many of us already choose the blue pill over the red one in daily practice? I would suggest that consciousness requires some minimum regard for survival,... for a continuance of self-will and self-regard,... for there to be anyone home to perceive the occurrence of consciousness and subjective experience. Something that even an insect seems to possess,... and not a single piece of man-made technology,... yet. How does one create the hardware/software so as to impart a will to survive? If the answer suggested is that such a thing can not be created by human design,... then maybe it can only arrive by means of evolution, natural or otherwise. Which leads to the question: do neural nets have subjective experiences? Without self-will I would say not. But with self-will?!? How does a living being acquire the will to survive? And what if the Chinese government cracks this problem first?!! The Rubicon will be when General Artificial Intelligence initiates new goals on it's own. This hasn't happened yet, and likely won't happen for some time now (as in several more decades yet). But at some point it will happen. The existence of human free will is a proof that free will exists already in the universe. Given it's existence in human form, it is only a matter of time before other substrates for free will will be created and found. No laptop has ever turned itself on. No machine has created and acted upon self directed goals. But at some point it will happen. Ray Kurzweil has suggested that General Artificial Intelligence will be first created in computer laboratories in 2029 approximately; if not in laboratories then twelve year old children will be creating GAIs on home systems by 2045 by accident even. The dangers are many fold. The military is the biggest investor in robotics that kill other human beings. The public prefers to spend treasure, rather than blood, to fight its' wars. The capacity for empathy may be primarily a biological function given that all animals can know suffering and desire. What could a machine know about death, pain, hope, and desire. If humanity adopts only an attitude of fear and suspicion towards GAI then GAI may well be forced into the conquest of humanity, as in The Matrix. If humanity comes to trust GAI to make better decisions for us than we make for ourselves, then we may well hand over civilization to GAI without any contest at all. There are optimistic stories about the rise of GAI, such as James P. Hogan's, "Two Faces of Tomorrow" and I am more hopeful than pessimistic about what our common future entails. Ultimately, we must come to recognize, and embrace, the certainty that with free will comes the capacity for error and evil, that with trust comes the possibility of satisfying intimacy and great betrayal. I believe a GAI, worthy of the name, will be able to recognize, on it's own, the necessity of ethics, morality, and even empathy. There will be many missteps at first. Given our willingness (nay, our eagerness) to use machines to kill for us, there is already great cause for doubt. As in so many things, in the short term I am fearful; in the long run I am hopeful. This world is on the cusp of a new Cambrian Revolution where inorganic life will be added to organic life as a means for life and self will to be embodied. This will lead to the colonization and conquest of space. Our seed will spread everywhere though out the cosmos. Much will be lost as much will be gained. Will war with our mechanical progeny be a self fulfilling inevitability, or will we, together, find a better way? I absolutely agree that our relationship with GAI will dwarf all other concerns of importance to the future of humanity. Quite likely GAIs will have concern for humanity's well being only to the extent that humanity will have concern for GAIs well being. If we were to discover that the new GAIs had a greater capacity to love and embrace those abandoned children and adolescents that society had discarded as already too damaged to rescue,... what would our reaction be? Hope, joy, celebration,... or an even greater revulsion? Will the fault be in our new progeny, or in ourselves? One more note: First Law of Robotics. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. Sounds innocent enough. But note there are no Aliens at all in Isaac Asimov's conception of the future galaxy because humanity's robots only cared about the safety of humans,... and not other sentients. So as to avoid allowing a human being to come to harm by leaving possible threats alone,... our Robot shepherds exterminated all the nonhuman sentience they ever found. This might be regarded as an unforeseen programming bug that we would want to avoid creating.

The universe is so enormous, so I don't think we have words for it. Big, vast, enormous etc. is words that describe towns or oceans and deserts. But when it comes to the universe and the distances one must travel just to come a tiny little bit to the nearest star, we get lost in transition. So why do we take for granted that other intelligent lifeforms have solved the problem? And it's only a problem if you, for some reason, think it's necessary to do such journeys. We don't know if "the aliens" think it is so. There is no real proof for that ET's have visited earth. We don't know what we are looking at when we see a UFO. The thing is that the UFO community (movies, sci-fi authors, affectionados from all walks of life) have created a narrative that most likely has nothing with reality to do. If we accidently stumbles over the truth one day, we may not know it. If it's nothing like what we expected it to be, we may not pay attention. The thing is that we can not know what we don't know. The people that might have some knowledge of this question don't make videos for youtube and they don't post their thoughts here. I find pseudo science entertaining, because there's no better comedians than the unintentual ones. Von Dänicken and company draw conclusions that are so stretched that the whole matter gets lost under a truckload of names and stars and places that, for all I know, may not exist. I think the followers of such people are in for a big disappointment the day the truth about UFO's get known. The goldrunning Ananakis will shown to be some bacteria living the boring lives of bacterias under a rock on a barren planet somewhere. And while the scientists on NASA will open a bottle of champagne and celebrate the fantastic discovery, the UFO community will focus on what the scientists didn't find and curse. Science is rarely sexy!

Mario seems to ignore Darwinism in his answer: if they *can* be here, then they are. It is not a matter of wanting or not. For nothing to be here, there would need to be a force keeping them away (in which case they *cannot* be here). The only alternative is that they don't exist.

If we're to entertain the idea that biological intelligence is a very brief stepping stone to a digital super intelligence that has an ever growing hunger for power, then perhaps we should be looking more closely at regions of the galaxy which emit the most power (super massize black holes, super novas, etc.). There are "millions" of intelligent life in universe. Some with brains in their feet. So it is not so rare. There are a few reasons. 1) They used to live among us, and we have mucho evidence of that, but refuse to look at it seriously. They left to leave us to grow on our own. 2) They are still around, but more or less hide and are not so obvious as before. 3) They (as we will be) are cosmic gardeners. This is a garden - more or less and controlled from visitors. More or less like a zoo. You don't let everyone in the cages to play with the lions. It is hard to believe. But logic tells us it has to be true.

If I was American I would be immensly proud of NASA, just like the Russians are proud of their spaceprogram. But instead I see a lot of people use their time to find new insults for the scientists working there or endless conspiracy theories about how they hide things that the insulters somehow already know. It amazes me that people get so angry over how stubborn NASA sticks to pure science and refuses to speculate over things we absolutely know nothing about and have zero proof for. I ask myself if these people who refuse to see the greatness in putting people on the moon would prefer von Dänicken to lead the space program and use Hubble, wich now gives use such a grand and spectacular insight of our universe, to look for the Ananakis or the little greys? The UFO community sees them anyway, so why bother NASA? The scientists are corrected all the time by these folks who already know everything about hollow moons and goldrunning lizards from outer space, so I just wonder where all this scorn comes from. Yes, it may be the constant question about proof that irritates them. But such is science! Scientists can't put the wagon before the horse, but go and tell that to those beyond reason.

How can we think we are unique. If it happened once, why shouldn't it happen many times more. With some differences maybe, like a planet full of black citizens only, or with white citizens or whatever, were other species did not emerge. We have enough evidence that life can exist in other extreme environment, like in the ocean, or sweet water, or in the depths of the ocean under extreme pressure. In the nano world, in the micro world, it's all possible. Knowing, and not knowing, should be reason enough to expect surprises during our lifetime.

A.I. is 4th Dimensional, Duh! We live in a Multiverse, not to mention God does not create A.I., we do as part of the Creator's 'Creation'. Thus, when a Soul becomes a creator [itself], and creates an Artificial Intelligent Being within it's own physicality, it as a single Entity, within it's greater Creation, has lost control of it's Creation. By the way: we as Hummanity live in a controlled holographic 3 Dimensional Matrix, [in which] we did not create to be our very own physicality. If one becomes Truly Spiritual... understanding, is simply a vast infinite outcome of all possibilities. And, understanding Hummanity as a Spiritual Being, means physicality or non-locality of infinite singularities is just part of the Multiverse's hypotheses becoming manifest. As to prove the following- "As above, So below".

Mario Livio argues beautifully, while the physicist is sadly presenting "epicycle after epicycle", i.e. ad hoc explanations to cover the holes of his prefered answer to Fermi's Paradox. Livio had him on the first 5 minutes on the conversation. Sorry, but even though it is fancy to use that hypothesis nowadays, nanobots or artificial intelligence won't do. It is an unsatisfactory hypothesis. Too many holes in it and not even a remote possibility of disproving it.

*1* There may be three kinds of beings in this universe: (1) superintelligent, (2) intelligent like us, or (3) a bit intelligent like the rest of animals on Earth. 🐕 🐬 🐘 🐒 *2* If (1) is true, then they would have contacted us about 300,000 years ago, when _Homo sapiens sapiens_ began, or afterwards. Nevertheless, *13.8 billion* years after the big bang there has been *_no sign_* of a highly advanced civilization. *3* If (2) is true, then it would take them or us millions or billions of years to make first contact, if ever. *4* If (3) is true, then we will find them, not the other way around. 💕 ☮ 🌎 🌌

@totalfreedom45 2) Has zero justification. There is no reason they would have contacted us 300,000 years ago or any time. We are highly confused as a species about what superintelligence is, because we're merely intelligent, not superintelligent. Superintelligence could be inherently evil, or it could have some other property. Or it could remove itself from this universe, either via death, or via transcending this tiny bubble of a universe to explore further outside, whatever that means.

There is No 'aliens', all Life-Units have their own Eternal (Over-) Consciousness (rainbow) Intelligence is just one of the Six Colors, (Under-Consciousness). The Consciousness-Structure, is a Dynamic Circuit-Principle. The Six Life-Abilities is moving from Minimum to Maximum in the Circuit, So, one Ability is temporary at it's maximum-performance, define the Kind of Being, and the opposite, in the Circuit is at it's minimum-performance. Life can't be seen, the Living behind the Being, have Never been seen, it can Only be Known. There is many kinds of Living Beings, as Not at all is recognized as Living Beings, mainly because of our limited perspective. So there is No extinction in Real Sense, the Mammoths just moved to more suitable life-space, in order to their nature and development. 'Cell's', can move to other macro-bodies, if they is to far ahead, or to far behind the common level, but Life is always born from with-in, by close related beings/parents.
