I think you expertly captured the melancholy that this piece tries to convey. While the Shroobs were malevolent and invading the Mushroom Kingdom for selfish reasons, you are effectively killing off their race for good. They have nowhere else to go, their homeworld is gone, and their last chance for survival is being thwarted. Surprisingly heavy for a Mario game and you certainly embedded that strongly into this arrangement.

@artstrange32302 жыл бұрын
After a series of grueling battles you reach the end of it. Victory is finally at hand. Your companion and you are both tired, scarred, and wounded, but so is your enemy. Up until now you hadn't stopped a single moment to consider the consequences of your actions. All you knew was that your enemies were to be stopped. Their actions unforgivable. Their motivations unfathomable. It is not until now that you get a glimpse of sadness in the anger your foe shows on their face. Tears run down their face yet the anger does not decay. The pain does not relent. Then, it hits you. Those were the last minions. The small horde you just fought through to get here. After them, there were no more. The loved ones of your opponent? Slain, by your hands. Those tears are of resignation. The anger you see is not so much anger as it is frustration and pain blended together. You realize there is no way out of this conflict anymore. You brought an entire population to extinction trying to protect what is dear to you. Your heart grows heavy as you realize it's your moment to land the final blows. Yet the question remains: Can you do it? Can you really end the life of the last individual of this foreign species? Can you consummate genocide for the sake of the lives of your loved ones? A look at your partner's face, a quick glance reveals the exact thought process you had just now. You can see the sadness and regret in their face, too. But they are following your lead... ... A bloodcurdling screech of pain erupts from deep within the soul of your adversary. The pain and sadness both subside. Their life is extinguished. It's time to wrap up. You gather your bearings. The person you came to rescue. Anything to keep your mind from dwelling on what you just did. "It is done. There is nothing more to be said. It is done. It had to be done."

Wow, this is a beautiful rendition. I remember how tough this boss was, and the despair that I felt that seemingly she was undefeatable to young me. How you really felt in the shoes of the Mario bros, but you could understand the side of the Shroobs as well. This was their last shot at a home that they had, and she was fighting to avenge her sister. She had lost her mind, she was rage incarnate. The Marios and Luigis knew that if they didn’t win, all would be lost. They both fought with EVERYTHING they had. She was fighting for her last chance at a home for her and her people, and the bros were fighting for their home. Everything was on the line. And I really felt that when she started sacrificing her own people in their ships to thwart you. She was frustrated, she was scared ... she was desperate. And the music just sets this feeling of despair for both sides perfectly. You get the overwhelming feeling of ‘nobody wins here’. If the bro’s win, they wipe out a species that was trying their best to cling onto their last hope at life. If they win, then the mushroom kingdom will fall and everyone in it will perish. Either way, so many lives will be lost. I know the shroobs seem evil, and they are certainly designed that way, anything with a purple colour palette at Nintendo is Grade A villain material. But I argue the case that they were pushed into a spot between a rock and a hard place. They were forced to move because things on their home planet had become dire (if I’m remembering correctly). And sure, they may have a mean streak. Especially the ‘basic’ minions. But in war, you can’t afford to be sympathetic. if you let someone believe that you might spare them, that you may lower your gun just for a moment, or if indeed you let them go, that could be the end of you. Do you think the enemy would spare you? What would you do in the Shroobs’ shoes? If you were fighting to feed your family, fighting for your right to live as a species? War can unite people, but it also brings out the worst in them. If you are going to survive, you need to be cold-hearted. You can’t afford to drop your guard. And while the majority of the Shroobs don’t display ‘humanity’, the princesses certainly do which suggests to me that as a species, they must do. While the younger one was a right tool for not really caring about her older sister (I guess you could call that spite or jealousy perhaps), the older sister was ALL feelings! She expressed frustration and rage and sadness, all of which humans do. So therefore they are aware of what they are doing. But again, you have to be cold and calculated in war if you have to win. There’s no time to be friends. And that’s what this music reminds me of. Of the eternal struggle. Where morales have to be sacrificed in order to win ... but there are no ‘real’ winners here. The Shroobs were put in a tight spot and forced to make a move. I’m sure if there was an alternative hospitable planet, they would’ve chosen it. But fate made them destined to be the bad guys. It’s really sad. It makes me think of the analogy of a wounded animal backed into a corner. It will fight with everything it has to survive. The Shroobs did exactly that ... but it just wasn’t enough. And that’s why this music is so great because it encapsulates all of this, in my opinion. Never has mario final boss music felt so solemn and depressing. We will never get anything like this again. It’s so wonderfully, emotionally raw. Both sides have a worthy cause. The Shroobs weren’t monsters, they were people. Same as you and me. They just happened to find themselves in a terrible situation.

Woah. Even though I've never got the chance to play Partner in Time (while I did play Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story), I've always loved that music. It's one of the few music that you would never expect in a Mario game, pretty much like the NSMB Wii final boss theme. It screams fear, despair and horror. That of both the Shroobs and the Mushroom Kingdom. This music is not as terrifying as Cackletta's Soul, and not as "awesome" (I use quotes since this one is just as awesome but you know what I mean) as In the Final/The Grand Finale, but it is much more dramatic than both. A true masterpiece, and you did it complete justice. Bravo!

story of two shroob princesses king shroob was watering spores for new shroobs but he took special care for two perticular ones, his two daughters they popped out of the ground with an hour difference, one was ugly and the other was very demanding, but the king loved them equally. as they were growing up the king taught them different things: shooting energy out of their hands, the shrooboids, their tasks as future queens,… at their adulthood the king was proud of his daughters, the big one was fertile and trained well, the smaller one was beautiful (in shroob standards) and lead entertaining shows. one day the king was dying and elder princess shroob was crying at his bed, the younger one didn’t feel as sad but still mourned at her father’s death. the planet started dying after the king’s death and the shroobs were looking for a new planet to live on until they finally found the mushroom kingdom. at the mothership the younger princess was sitting on the king’s throne to show she should be the ruler, the elder one saw that as disrespect to their father but still sat silent. later inside peach’ castle the younger princess wanted to go introduce her to the mushroom princess first, peach then grabbed the cobalt star trying to use it and elder princess shroob pushed her sister aside and got trapped inside the star, younger princess shroob dusted off her dress and tried to attack peach again and the cobalt star broke. after the capture of princess peach princess shroob recontinued her shows to entertain her people while mario, luigi and the babies were trying to save peach. at star hill the elder princess learned to speak english and tricked the bros and baby bros to collect the remaining cobalt shards. at the top of shroob tower the princesses shroob were mad at the bros for different reasons: ruining the younger princess’ plans and killing the other shroobs. after the younger princess shroob died the elder one knew the shroobs were done for but still wanted revenge on the Mario’s and luigi’s for killing her sister. the other shroobs were happy and surprised to see her return and wanted to help in any way. when elder princess shroob took a lot of damage she used her crown to transform into a monster, she had no longer concern for her subjects, she was blinded with rage against the four bros but she failed and after saying he last words she turned herself into a small mushroom. later at future princess peach’ castle she hopped into bowser’s mouth possessing him as a last ditch effort, shrowser breathed out her spirit and knocked away every attack the bros do to him, unfortunately for him those attacks hit elder princess shroob’s soul ending her once and for all. the remaining survivors got captured and put into the freezing room of bowser’s castle together with the lifeless bodies of their princesses frozen forever in ever ice… the end

You know, the first time I played the game, I thought the shroobs deserved death, until this battle happens... The music was so sad I immediately knew something was going terribly wrong, for both sides; Mario, Luigi and Peach are doing their best to protect the world they love, and they know that if they fail, everything will be lost, and their friends will die... But the side of the shroobs isn't less tragic, I remembered at this battle something the introduction of the game made clear; there were no stars to support the shroob planet, this means one thing: they were happy once upon a time, until their star exploded, and with that, their planet started to die slowly and painfully... Keep in mind they probably had to see everything on their planet dying painfully, and they had no more opportunities to see the sunlight, I think this is what made them crazy, psychopathic and depressed, because even scientifically speaking, if you don't see the sun for a long time, you could become crazy... That is exactly what happened to them, it's unfortunate, they only had bad luck by their side, nothing more, the despair and the rage when they saw their home dying were corrupting them to the point they are today, and even when they are evil, they still have hope in their hearts; hell, that's why they did what they did, they really were thinking they could conquer the kingdom to be finally at peace, however their corruption made them lose empathy, and this is why Mario and Luigi killed them; They were already dead from the very beginning, what the bros were fighting were nothing but corrupted genocidal parasites... But the question is... Would you be any better?... Probably and surely, no... The despair and the sadness would make you crazy, and that's tragically what happened to them...

What's amazing about this piece is how it's melancholic thought the entirety of it. Most final boss themes display how powerful the boss is, or urge you on to victory. This one however makes it clear that no matter who wins there will unfortunately a large loss of life on one of the sides. This is a war for the survival of a species. And defeat means certain extinction. This music isn't meant to make you feel good.

YES for the price of victory in this case means survival of the entire specie.

Honestly, I don't think I've got words for just how hard this piece goes. I wondered about it starting with the gentle piano, but the moment that violin came in? And then the choir in the background? Truly befitting the final fight this plays at~

With the focus on piano, it sounds like something from Kingdom Hearts. Nicely done!

this just made my rough morning so much better (even though it took me a few days to notice this. youtube didn't notify me-) you did this theme so well, and it brings back so much nostalgia of me playing this game as a kid and finally beating it as an adult. astounding job on the arrangement! ^^

this game haunted me as a kid, it was such a haunting and ABSOLUTELY BRUTALY difficult game there's a part where you traverse through a devestated town and just about every character in the story gets captured or transformed I think I only managed to beat the final boss a few times back then, it was actual hell, I don't remember everything about that game but it was clearly heavily inspired by final fantasy.

This is it, a final battle that is, in truth, higher in stakes than any other through the entirety of the Mario series. No matter who wins or loses, there will not be peace. Either the Shroobs or the Mushroom Kingdom will cease to be. Mario and Luigi are fighting for their very lives, for the lives of everyone on the planet - and they know victory only means their enemies die instead. There will be death, the only question is whose. The Shroobs have nowhere else to go. They are cut off from everything. This planet is their only hope for survival. And yet, their existence would mean the death of kingdoms, harvested into energy for the Vim Factories or brainwashed into servitude like the Hammer Bros. They must be stopped. But the burden of slaying a race is not easy, and yet, that burden rests on the shoulders of infants. It is precisely this forced choice that has made Mario and Luigi what they are.
