The part that hurt the most was how quickly Leon moved on. He was the first to fall in love, and the first to fall out of love. I can’t blame him though. I saw the movie today. I just don't quite buy that Leon was happy with his life at the end of the story. He says that he is no longer holding what happened against Mario, but clearly seeing Mario again affects him. You're right though. It does seem Leon got a new boyfriend after the breakup. But I think it was important for Mario to see that his actions have consequences, as heartbreaking as it was for him.

I couldn't disagree more, and it's why I loved it and could relate to it. It's the first movie that I've really liked in a long time. Anyone who has ever loved and lost could relate to this and the feeling of loss he has when he walked away, knowing it's too late and over.. What was he supposed to do, abandon the guy he's with now and run off at the end??? Very one dimensional and shallow of you, talk about bad "Karma". You can't have it all, and one wrong move cost him what mattered most, and sadly he realized it too little too late, which is realistic. That happens in real life. The ending matters and is perfect in this story because, like in real life, that's what happens. This is reality when you pick your priorities over what matters, and life doesn't just wait for you. But don't worry, there are thousands of mindless films out of Hollywood that end with everyone happy and getting what they want to give you the false illusion that it's reality. I liked Mario as it is

@@jimreagan5121 I think you're all missing the point a little. Mario was not going to come out and he was not giving up his career no matter what Leon did. They each had something they couldn't live without, Mario had soccer, and Leon could not live in the closet. The subject matter of the movie was professional sports. How many out athletes are there in soccer, baseball, football? 3, who then lasted a year after they came out. That is the point. The other guy wasn't really relevant. It was just showing you what Mario had to give up to achieve his dreams. It's not even just the fans, it's the team, sponsors, all homophobes. Even if Leon was alone at the end I think Mario would have begged Leon to come back but he would not have been willing to go public about them, and Leon would not have accepted that. Mario looks like he is heading for a breakdown at the end though, anxiety attacks, nightmares, relying on pills. Maybe he would eventually make that choice. It was a very true ending. And really sad. Stayed with me for days. And actually in a real life situation if Mario had agreed to come out and live honestly I do think Leon would have abandoned the guy he was with. They spent so much time at the beginning showing why they were meant to be.

hmmm happy romantic endings i crave them too :) ..........watch HAWAII (2013) it has a cute ending and it is beautifully shot in my opinion :) i watched it today .....u can also watch THE WAY HE LOOKS (2014) very romantic, GODS OWN COUNTRY (2017) , LOVE SIMON (2018) (love Simon is,well not exactly a romance focussed movie but has a happy gay romantic ending) ,THE THING ABOUT HARRY (2020) , THE MAN WITH THE ANSWERS (2021) i loved this one

I just got done watching this movie on Tubi and I'm still thinking about it. I also cried a little bit. I reallt thought that Mario was going to fight for Leon and their love but in the end, like most do, he chickened out. Mario made his choice. 🤷 This is one of those movies you really want a follow up of to see if Mario and Leon got back together. I LOVED this movie!!! Sad but beautiful like most gay LGBTQ movies! ❤💝❤💝❤

As a fan of Bundesliga team, this film was so realistic that it hurt. Roughly 5-10% of the world is LGBT and still everyone has a missus in the Bundesliga. 2020 and still retired Hitzlsperger is only gay man in the German football. Sad, really.

⚠️Maybe burning events I watched the movie this evening and was thinking a lot,the movie is beautiful in a tragic way, some might say its end is stupid or something like that. I stayed until the last second in the movie saying that Mario will turn the car around and get back to him but the writer did it in a way that makes us contradictory for example I thought with my mind that the end is very realistic and it is closer to the truth , but in my heart I never accepted the end and this is what makes me sad 🥺💔

I totally agree with you. I think they were too many unanswered questions at the end about the fate of those characters that I think the writer was thinking about a sequel or maybe they just wanted to leave it open for the audience to reflect. And it’s probably better that way. But in my heart I wish I could get a sequel where these two people could live happy together.

Oh, here's what happened for you fools who didn't catch it - be true to yourselves, appreciate those around you, never take anyone for granted, especially the one you love in an attempt to advance your own career. Then you won't have a final break up, where one decides to have integrity and find someone who understands and appreciates that. The story completely played out - and it was great. But now it's over. There's no sequel, nor should there be. This wasn't a teen comedy, it was a romantic story. Mario lost.. There's no indication that they were ever going to see each other again. Leon is in a new STABLE relationship, in a new home, a new career and life, and seemed happy with that, and his new man was secure from his body language and the way he politely excused himself, but he knows Leon was good, and so would most people who know genuine guys like Leon. I'm sorry that you just don't get it. If you want a sequel, watch it again. Or watch Beautiful Thing (which is also great and didn't require a damn useless sequel) and call it Mario: The Early British Years. The end.

Nope - just watched it and the subtitles are not a problem. This movie is heartbreakingly real. I thought it was going to be another popcorn gay flick with a lot of eye candy, but I turned out to be wrong. To those who complain about the sad ending - life isn't perfect. Do you want to be lied to? People make tough choices and choices have consequences. And some mistakes will never be forgiven. The feeling Mario conveys so well at the end when he is driving his car.. that is the exact feeling I felt after my breakup. It fucking sucks. Xx

The movie is great because it's quite realistic and the actors do a good job, but it gets a joke when it comes to our great faith of FC SAINT PAULI, the most Progressive football club of the World. The players literally play with the rainbow 🌈 on team's t-shirts. We could have a f***ng Hamburg Pride inside Millerntor Stadion. If there is a football club where you can be an open homosexual player in the World, that's FCSP for sure! PS: I'm not even from Germany but the first place I visited was Hamburg, in a weekend where our beloved club played a match as a host! ✌️⚪🟤⚫⚽
