Grab a carbon monoxide detector. Could be a break in you vent pipe from your furnace, which smells like exhaust, which it is. Look at your furnace and see which end of the house the vent pipe goes. Typically they are in basements and the pipes go up inside the walls through the roof. Same thing with a water heater. Furnaces kick on and off periodically, explaining why you only smell it from time to time. Hope this helps...

You can't smell Carbon Monoxide. A fuel smell could be a dead animal, gasoline leaked into the sewer system nearby, or from a neighbors house, improperly sealed garage, etc. Usually people can ask a fire department to come out with an electronic sensor for free, depending on where they live.

You can't smell carbon monoxide its self, but you can smell exhaust from a furnace, which contains carbon monoxide. Take a whiff of the tail pipe of your car next time it is running. You will smell it. It contains carbon monoxide.

Carbon Monoxide doesn't smell like fuel, it doesn't smell like anything.
