I really do like how Mario and Donkey Kong are fully animated on the title screen. This is definitely going to be a good game and remake that the Super Mario franchise has.

It's good to see a bit of a "midrange" game coming from a major studio. Not every game needs to be the biggest game. Sometimes it's nice to see that skill be put to something smaller and experimental.

It is really nice to see these two having their little rivalry again. Loved this whole series and the Minis from day one on the DS. REALLY glad to hear there's new levels too, otherwise I probably would've skipped this.

We are so far removed from the earliest Donkey Kong games where the ape is exclusively a villain that it feels odd and uncharacteristic of DK to be stealing toys and antagonizing Mario. I’m not against DK playing this role but this DK clashes so much with the one we know from DKC. Mario and DK canon are far from the most important thing, part of me still wishes this side of the gorilla was represented in the rest of his appearances. Make him a flawed protagonist in DKC where he also has a ravenous APEtite (couldn’t help myself) for toys/collectible figurines instead of just bananas. And maybe DK steals from a collector who is prone to holding huge grudges even after DK returns the item, something like that. A flawed protagonist DK would give him more personality and make him stand out more from the rest of the Nintendo heroes. Also, it would be a nice nod to these games to see DK have a hoard of collectibles in DKC and a big picture of Pauline in his house.

@@protocetidin DKC we went and got the grandson of the original DK. Mario vs DK was what gave DK the third and Mario beef when Mario originally had beef with DK the first/Cranky Kong and DK Jr.

@@supercamborg4218 What’s confusing is if the DK in here is the same as the one that stars in the newest DKC games, the two are probably different canons. Even if they are different storylines, present day DK is most commonly portrayed in a positive light and it’s awkward to see him as a bad guy in M v DK.

Idc what anybody else say. Charles is the only Mario. I’d rather have them using AI to have “him” voicing Mario forever rather than some random 20-something guy who will never be even remotely close to being able to replicate his voice. Didn’t even once selected Mario on Wonder for this reason.

It’s worth the £40 ($40) in my opinion and since I never played the original GBA game, I won’t be bothering to track down a copy as the Switch version blows the GBA original away graphics wise.

This formula never got the chance to evolve and spread it's legs and that's a shame imo because DK94 and this game are legit a phenomenal duo. The Mini stuff was okay, but I really hope this can pave the way for future puzzle platforming Mario vs DK games starring the real Mario with his acrobatics.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the ONLY Mario game where you can move while handstanding as part of Mario's mobility and defense mechanic right? I don't see any other entries in the Mario series that lets you do this pretty cool mechanic.

hearing the original sounds in HD is crazy, the music update makes me happy too. it's just weird seeing mario with the newer artstyle and the newer voice clips as opposed to the ones from 64 and sunshine, but it's good to know the original physics and gameplay are maintained as closely as possible, even if the new coat of paint doesn't feel quite as familiar.

In the original game, the presents were not just collectables, they led to a chance to get extra lives. In this game, they’re just collectables. At least there is a new mini game with a chance to get extra lives.

There is no forest area in the NeS version of donkey kong. Forests didn't start being incorporated into the Donkey kong franchise till Donkey kong country on SNES

Donkey kong country has nothing to do with Mario. Mario and Donkey was enemy back then. This was even before Mario games as we know. Donkey Kong kidnap Princes Peach and we had to rescue her as Mario

Does he say "Come back here! YOU BIG-A MONKEY!" at ANY point in this remake? I know the pre-chapter chase scenes all had a variety of voice clips but this is the second time we've seen one that has that modern, weaker "Stop, come back." Also did they really deadass cut the voice clip of Mario saying "Mario versus... Donkey Kong!" on the title screen? The changed or removed voice clips are hitting me hard, someone said it may be because I'm neurodivergent and that's true, but man. I BREATHED the original game as a kid. The audio of it is burned into my childhood. I want Mario to agonizingly moan "Mama-mia..." after he's been burned alive or crumpled to the ground in agony when he dies like in the original. The changes so far make me sadly expect a more standard death animation like that of 3D World though.
