Joel 2:1-11 | The Prophet Joel Explained | The Day of the Lord

In Joel 2:1-11, the prophet Joel describes a fearsome, unstoppable army on the attack, headed straight for the city of Jerusalem. What's most interesting about this army is who is at the head of it leading the attack against Jerusalem. Who is leading the attack? That's part of what we'll discuss in this teaching on Joel 2:1-11.
Also, in Joel 2:1-11, the prophet Joel again mentions the Day of the Lord. He describes the day of the Lord as a day of darkness, dense clouds and overall gloom and doom. The day of the Lord will be so bad that at the end of Joel 2:1-11, the prophet says "Who can endure it?" The answer, of course, is nobody.

This is a very good example of obtaining a presupposition from the New Testament and applying it to the Old Testament. Instead, we should understand the OT first, and apply that knowledge to our interpretation of the NT. For the NT came out of the OT.

God’s Army is on the move. Joel 2 describes a great people coming, a great and mighty army, spiritual army. A great & powerful army will spread over the mountains. There has never been anything like it before and there will never be anything like it again. In front of them a fire destroys. In back of them a flame burns. (This is a spiritual view) The land in front of them is like the garden of Eden; the land behind them is like an empty desert. Nothing will escape from them. They look like horses. (This is Joel describing powerful people the best way he knows how, using horses as an illustration)and they run like war horses. It is like the noise of chariots, rumbling over the tops of the mountains, like the noise of a roaring fire burning dry stalks. They are like a powerful army lined up for battle. When they see them, nations shake with fear, and everyone’s face becomes pale. They charge like soldiers; they climb over the wall like warriors. they all march straight ahead and do not move off their path. They do not run into each other because each walks in line. They break through all efforts to stop them and keep coming. They run into the city. They run at the wall and climb into the houses, entering through windows like thieves. Before them, earth & sky shake. The sun & the moon become dark, and the stars stop shining. The Lord shouts out orders to his army. The army is very large! Those who obey him are very strong! The Lord’s day of judging is an overwhelming and terrible day. No one can stand up against it! Notice: This describing the Lords Army, Gods last day people filled with the Glory of God. The former and latter rain of Gods Glory poured out at the end of the church age. Why? To gather in the final harvest of souls. Coming together here in 2021... ⁰

You all are missing a key element in it all. DO NOT STOP AT VERSE 10... You MUST read verse 11 to understand whose army it is. "The Lord gives voice before His army, For His camp is very great; For strong is the One who executes His word. For the day of the Lord is great and very terrible; Who can endure it?" - Joel 2:11 This army is the Lord's army - an army as never been or seen before on the earth. Remember Ezekiel 37 and the valley of dry bones? "Also He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live.” So I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, AN EXCEEDINGLY GREAT ARMY." - Ezekiel 37:9-10 The "exceedingly great army" of Ezekiel 37:9-10 is the same army of Joel 2:2-11. The valley of dry bones prophecy is yet to be fulfilled... The return of the Israelite people to the "promised land" is a prophecy that is yet to be fulfilled... Why do you all think that the Almighty God raises up "an exceedingly great army" from the valley of dry bones? Why do you all think that the Lord's army described in Joel 2:2-11 goes up against Jerusalem? We must follow the biblical instructions in order to understand the Holy Scriptures - line upon line, precept upon precept...

I am certainly not very educated in this matter. However I’m currently in Joel and I’ve done some research because it’s a hard one to understand. You’re the only one so far who’s mentioned that the Assyrians and the Babylonians could have been the army in the day of the Lord. I feel the book of Joel is a timeline of time. The locusts came back in the day when they lived in rebellion. The Assyrians and Babylonians was the day of the Lord army. The outpouring of the spirit was Pentecost and chapter three is about the end times. Like I said before. I wish I knew more I’m simply a deli clerk

I was listening to the 3 options about this passage, I was thinking about the cosmic army that you mentioned, but I feel it could be the Lord using the Babylonians or Assyrians and heading their army against Judah. Just referring to Habakkuk, where the Lord says he will use Babylon against Judah. I don’t know if it is right, but could it be that way?

Rabbi tovia singer , truly knows the scriptures! While the Hebrew/ Jewish ✡️ nation has been given the holy bible in their language, Greeks wrote the new testament! Many races and cultures are first generation believers, and it's always a good thing to seek truth from God, think of those who have worshiped God for thousands of years through generation after generation! Jerusalem and Isreal! We are speaking of history of the relationship of God with his holy children and the holy children with God! ...why tell them their culture or understanding is not true? Think seriously and research rabbi tovia singer! This man and Many others have sincere hearts, but we are not to add or take away from truth from God! Often a man can read the holy bible to his family and they are more concerned with others things like cooking, school, work, things in life they do to make the next day easier for them! But when those who truly fear And love God, they listen from their heart and mind! They know the words and will of God is truth!...I was once in a coma, and in las vegas veteran hospital, I experienced many spiritual things while in a coma! For days and nights my body was in a coma, but me heart and mind was being shown thing from God! I myself don't believe in those things, yet I have to admit I 100% experienced spiritual things when in a coma! What's the best thing that could happen? I could speak to a church leader willing to help me understand why I am living through these experiences! The va hospital has chaplains! But let's be real, chaplains have work and their daily life on their mind, they collect their paycheck and have their house of work! They are lukewarm! Each chaplain has their denomination and has their opinions! But I don't want a human opinion, I want someone who has a relationship with God! We assume in society places of honor and positions of honor are chaplains and church leaders! But are they serving God? Or are they serving themselves? I should be able to find someone here in the usa who will help me understand how to repent if its warnings? How to describe what is saw if it's truth from God! Who can a veteran trust to speak to a out things from God? ...I know 100% God knows the truth of what I experienced! ...so what should I do? I try to repent, and I have tried to speak to someone for my sanity, but my heart grows with sorrow and grief! And my health gets worse daily! While church leaders speak of money and tithes ...?

Verse 11 doesn't necessarily mean an angelic army. God has called human armies His armies before, when He sends them forth to destroy a land. In Ezekiel, in daniel... it is God who sends armies forth to conquer, in His judgment of another land. So when it says the armies of the Lord it could still mean a human army. God even called pagan king cyrus His servant, because he delivered the known world into Cyrus hands and sent him about to conquer. Same with nebuchadnezzar

You are right. This is talking about a human army and not angelic army. They are a group of people that God will clothe with His glory and they will go about executing judgement to those that offend and it will definitely start in the church.

Consider that Isaiah 13, as well as Isaiah 10 associates “the LORD” Himself with the use of the nations against His own people Israel in light of the covenant parameters and the covenant curses of Deut. 28. I believe Joel 2 is speaking ultimately of the antichrist army in the last days. The locusts plague would have sounded the alarm of the covenant curses of Deut 28 that culminates with the nations making war with the nation of Israel and and a scattering from the land. Surely the prophet would have understood the circumstances in light of the covenant parameters of the Torah. They are coming from a far country, From the farthest horizons, The Lord and His instruments of indignation, To destroy the whole land. - Isaiah 13:5 Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger And the staff in whose hands is My indignation, - Isaiah 10:5 “You shall bring out much seed to the field but you will gather in little, for the locust will consume it. - Deuteronomy 28:38 Your teaching is very clear, thank you for your labor!

This is the army of the LORD at the second coming of Jesus Christ. It's the saints and angels coming with Christ at the second coming. We are going to rule and reign with Christ the bible says and even Enoch prophesied about The Lord coming with the saints in the end of days. If you look after verse 11 Israel is repenting and calling on the name of the Lord. This is when the Jewish people will see Jesus on the mount of olives that Zachariah prophesied about. It's the end of the time of Jacob's trouble that we call the 7 year tribulation time and it's the day of the Lord (second coming). The land before them as the garden of Eden is symbolic that God is coming to restore the earth and set up His kingdom but He will first burn up all the wickedness and purify the earth. Even Israel will be subject to God's judgment for rejecting Christ but they will repent and God will forgive and save the entire nation of Israel at one time when He appears to judge the nation's of the world.
