THIS VIDEO CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE ENTIRE HIS DARK MATERIALS SEASON 3 !
One last Marisa Coulter video.
For the last three years, Ruth Wilson's Marisa Coulter has been one of my favorite characters in tv.
I hope that each year's video has done justice to a character that lifted this series up, in season 3 as well.
Thank you for watching !

She's a definition of a tragic character - fleshing out Marias as a person was the best thing this adaptation did by far. What a wonderful tribute, it was simply mesmerising to watch! Thank you

Such a beautiful video for this show's most compelling character. Ruth Wilson's Marisa Coulter now defines this character and this adaptation, true and wonderful (and flawed) as it has been, has been saved and elevated by Ruth's performance so many times. Please keep making her videos!

My take (having only seen the show as of writing) is that Asriel and Marisa are very complicated people, and did many horrible things to achieve what they respectively saw as a greater good, or the necessary evils to attain power/growth. They both paid dearly for this, with Lyra understandably harbouring a lot of resentment toward them, and when they both realised just how much they actually cared about her, it was too late to make it up to her. However, it wasn’t too late to do the best for her. Marisa and Asriel realise that they care for each other, but most importantly they share a love for Lyra - Asriel’s last words to Marisa make that pretty evident - and they choose to make an unimaginable sacrifice; not only in order to stop Metatron’s evil from destroying everything, but crucially to save their daughter. Of course, their eventual heroics don’t negate the injustices and impacts of what they did - Asriel neglected his child for years, killed her best friend (an innocent child) and often seemed like a callous, uncaring maniac. Marisa caused extensive suffering as an agent of the Magisterium, and also tortured and killed many beings unjustly. However, I feel it’s impossible to ignore their final act of unparalleled courage and selflessness. They not only knowingly went to their deaths, but to the worst kind of death imaginable - in a universe where a life after death demonstrably exists, they fell into what essentially amounts to an eternal purgatory of falling, a fate you could posit as worse than death. And they did this not for power or lust or greed, as they made their previous major decisions, but for love and the good of others at the complete cost of themselves, and knowing that they could never tell Lyra of the sacrifice they made for her, or that they did it out of love. That is what makes the ultimate act of selflessness - Choosing to sacrifice yourself, knowing that the one you’re doing it for will never even know, but that thanks to you they’ll survive and hopefully thrive. So, they’re complex to say the least, but that’s what makes them compelling. I’d say that they lived as pretty morally reprehensible people for a lot of their lives, but chose to die as heroes rather than live as villains or cowards, and they deserved to be remembered for that.

Okay but like 3:50?? I never realised it before but this is actually parallel to Michelangelo’s painting of Adam and God - Lyra is Eve (Adam) and Mrs Coulter is mother (The father). Lyra holds her hand the same way as Adam does in the painting, and it seems as if the dæmon of Mrs Coulter is the one reaching out. This also ties in with the themes of defeating God, placing Lyra in a superior position to her mother. I am in love with this symbolism and I needed to rant about it

This is BEAUTIFUL. I don't watch this show but I've seen a few of your videos and every one just keeps getting better. And from an editor's perspective, hearing bits of "Iduna" in the second song was a total shock, like a mournful yet dramatic epilogue. Amazing!
