I love the way Marisha is playing Keyleth. She plays her like a person stuck in love with a literal dead person. She said on 4-sided dive that Keyleth is not able to move on because of Vax's ravens and other things. He likes to remind Keyleth he is watching. I also find it poetic that Keyleth is in the dead end that Laudna says shes always in/is. By the way, CONGRATULATIONS ON 25K!!!🎉🎉🎉

Dude…just finished it. WOW!! When Laura’s character died, the entire tone of the event changed. It felt like everyone was mostly playing with a “we are level 20; these are our main heroes, so we can’t die.” They were taking things serious, sort of, but still loose. Then when the death happened…oh my! The somberness around the table. You could see Liam’s other character and Ashley’s character both thinking how to save the day. And Taliesin and Travis both getting mad and eager to get a chance to kill that guy!! What a wonderful campaign and execution by Matt.

Congratulations on 25k! Great recap of an amazing episode. One subtle reference that might have been mildly confusing to people who haven't watched Campaign 1 is Scanlan's ongoing rivalry with Trinket. I think it started very early on, with Sam trolling Laura about all the times her animal companion was more trouble than he was worth, and it continued from there. In any case, it is worth knowing that Scanlan has always made a point of trying to get rid of Trinket, at least as a joke. In this episode it was most obvious with his Dominate Monster command, but there were a few other references before that. Props to Sam for not hesitating to revive this joke, 30 game years and 8 IRL years later.

I may be the lone voice on this but I still don't think the "one night" thing was a time stop on his being allowed to stay. I think it was more like ... a reprieve from the fight that they ALL need to participate in. She was giving them a night to breathe, but she straight up told him to choose where he wanted to be and he said he wanted to stay. Matt was VERY careful with his wording. I think he wants us to think it's temporary and then he'll give Vax his freedom at the end. I cannot see him dragging Vax away from Keyleth if this is truly Exandria's big finale with C4 being lauded as so different already. That's not a conclusion Matt would feel gave folks closure.

Also, even if he stays tied to the Matron, him being eternal with Keyleth and getting free nights from time to time is sadly beautiful. And when she finally dies, he returns to the champion service beyond the Divine Gate

The tragic ending was fine at the end of C1, it was painful but poetic. But with all of them revising Vox Machina this in depth? I think we deserve a good ending now. Vax has made his priorities CRYSTAL clear. He broke the rules for Kiki, and chose his family when the Matron gave him the night. She knows what it's like to love and lose, and she has no knowledge of what happens to him if she falls to Predathos. I cannot imagine her keeping him thethered and sinking him with her, especially since she has made it clear that she will not flee. Vax has served her well, and his special connection to her is what got him tortured in the first place (they didn't go after a normal cleric or paladin, and they didn't even go after the other blessed members of Vox Machina, his connection makes him UNIQUELY DIVINE for their purposes). Not to mention that if he IS uniquely divine, Predathos might just straight up find him snack worthy! It feels cruel, Vax and Keyleth deserve to be happy.

To me, it's really hard to decipher why the Raven Queen wants Vax with her at all times and not allow him to be in the mortal realm. The argument can be that there's tasks that he and only he can handle alone while the Matron oversees everything else. But counter to that, wasn't Purvan Suul allowed to travel freely through realms? Or was he always, in the same realm? It makes me wonder if the Matron is keeping him in her realm is due to a selfish reason (aka not to be alone anymore) or there's an inherent risk him being in the mortal realm where he has so many loved ones that may "distract" him from the mission.

honestly (and I might be totally wrong here) I think it’s just that vax… died. he’s the eternal champion of the raven queen because she “saved” him when he got disintegrated by vecna and allowed him to come back for the final fight of C1 but he’s… dead… and that wouldn’t change if she relieved him of his duties because she won’t bring him back to life (it’s kind of the whole thing about the matron, I guess). there are ways to bring back a disintegrated person in dnd, especially as lvl 20 characters (I’m not too knowledgeable about mechanics but I think true resurrection would work?) but that would obviously take away from the story (if it were that easy, why did all of this have to happen, you know?). anyways, that’s only rational thinking. I would love love *love* for vax and keyleth to have their happy ending despite it all😭

I look forward to your recaps almost as much as the show itself! :) Crazy idea (but very unlikely): what if the Matron's idea of leaving Exandria, or potentially being a casualty of Predathos, is so that Vax can have a clean way of returning to Exandria and his friends and relationship with Keyleth? That would be interesting...! Also: is WizKids planning a Ryloran set? After they canceled the Calamity characters miniature set with no notice (which really made me mad because I ordered it a while back and was waiting on it!), as well as the Shade Mother, I wonder if they're even going to consider future Critical Role miniatures at all. But if they did make some Ruidus creatures of various kinds (I'd also love to see Bormodos!), that would be amazing!

Love the video one thing I want to point out that a lot of people do not point out. Vax is indebted with a debt heavier then any in his life to the raven queen, in the moment she originally brought vex back its very clear from Liams roleplay in C1 after that moment that he grows from contempt to a form of admiration and even motherly love with the raven queen. His sister means everything to him and the raven queen was who allowed her to be alive in that moment and with a family. Vax will always love his family but he found love for his god. That is my interpretation anyway

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought the Matron was fully letting him go, that being said I would've been disappointed if it had been that easy, I feel like it would've been disappointing if, after the tragic ending and epilogue of C1 and thirty years of mourning from Keyleth, Vax would just get released back to his old life with no prompting or bargaining, especially in another party's campaign. I lowkey hope that he remains in her service but he and Keyleth have a discussion about how she can move on from him

'The night' is not neccesarily 'one night', I think Matt was very specific and careful with his words. 'The Night' could be for as long as the war lasts, or even longer, say if the gods get killed is that 'The Night' from the perspective of the Matron?

Push the limits. character death especially the older ones just make for good story sometimes. According to D&D rules, 1 round of combat is about six seconds. The fight took four or five rounds. That means everyone who watched the episode spent five hours of real time to understand 30 seconds of game time.

I don't know how I would feel about it, but Keyleth could end up with a child after this one night with Vax. I'm a man so I don't know if that would help her move on, but it might be. I also don't necessarily like the implication that a woman would need a child to complete their character arc

I think if anything this and the previous episode just demonstrate how much more emotional weight is tied behind these characters in comparison to subsequent campaigns. It makes sense as these characters were played over the span of decades and are much more developed. But the feeling and the shift when going back to these guys, not as a one shot, but as a real consequential part of the main narrative. It just feels way more poignant. There were moments mighty nine got close. Mainly with Caleb and molly. But nothing touches VM. Bells hells have got nowhere near. Not even with the death of FCG which feels so inconsequential and so emotionally underwhelming. There was more felt in the 1 round of vex temporarily dying than there was for the entirety of Fcgs perma death.

It was a great battle but I never got the sense that the level 20 party were ever in as much danger as they should have been. Matt did make a couple of rulings that made it easier on them but I'm not really sure what the solution to that would be. Mostly I was just worried that they'd kill or trap Vax before they could free him.
