Hey Greg great video...nice to see someone not obsessed with their lawn. My neighbour's to the East of me have fertilized their lawn and mowed it twice already! Everytime a few leaves end up there they race out to go get them...pretty comical actually! wonderful information. I have never planted treated peas, and now I will probably never plant an 'untreated' pea. my weather is so unpredictable. Wonderful to know the dandelion trick. thank you so much for the info

Here in HRM I sowed seeds in early April before I went on 2 weeks vacation. They were under cover. I was pleased to see they had germinated when I got home. My garlic and multiplier onions are poking up. The bloody dock is looking healthy. Chives are good. Ravishes sprouting.

I have experimented this year multi-sowing half of my peas indoors under lights for earlier and more consistent germination. Sure, I'll have the hassle of having to harden them off before I plant them out but maybe I'll get some peas on my dinner plate a little earlier. I'll sow a second succession directly in the garden in a few weeks. If I don't see an advantage to this method, I'll go back to direct sowing them all next year. Last year, I grew the Super Sugar Snap variety you just sowed and they are super good, just like candy. BTW, your lawn looks exactly like mine. Sure, I love the look of a golf course lawn but I'd sooner spend my time doing something else than putting tonnes of care into it. (S. Ontario, where we're having to be REALLY patient this year for spring to arrive - more snow in the forecast for tonight.)

Interesting you are about 1-2 weeks ahead of me in PEI. The dandelions are only 1 or two leaves right now and the grass is hints of green, not patches yet.

I had relatives in my great grandparents' generation who went by the "plant peas on Good Friday" rule. I suppose it worked out for them or they wouldn't have done it, but some Good Friday's are early! Maybe it shows how tough peas are for taking cold.

Do you ever get birds plucking out the pea and bean seeds? I used to have to replant several times, until I put a protective hoop of small chicken wire over the pea and bean rows. I take it off when the plants are a couple of inches tall.

Newbie gardener here in Ontario. I had a thought watching this. If you did buy untreated seeds but coated them in cinnamon or sprinkled cinnamon in the planting hole if that would help? I just planted mine yesterday. I used principles of multi-sowing in gutters but directly into the ground (sans gutter) as an experiment, wished I had thought of this cinnamon trick🤦🏻‍♀️ next time.

There's no guarantee that the cinnamon will protect against the fungi that attack the pea seed - also - there's no guarantee that it is work at temps near zero - or whether its effects are decreased by rainfall. Who knows - the antifungal properties of cinnamon may only kill beneficial fungi :)

I find wrapping the seeds in a damp paper towel for a few days until they begin to sprout before planting also helps to prevent rot in cool soil. An alternative if you didn't want to use the treated seeds. The potatoes on the outside of your bed sounds like a good idea 🙂

Same for me I don't care about the lawn. Once I use yo lived in city I treated my lawn like the neighbourg. One day I picked up 1 wild stawberry and I still regret till now. I lost part of taste and sensibility due to chemical that was spray the previous day. Thank you Mr. Greg for your advises it will helpe me :)

Thank you for the info. I was wondering why my peas got to about 8” and stoped. But know I don’t know what to do? Do I start over or see what happens with these? Or plant something else. I am very new at all this.

My best guess is poor drainage/ too much water. If they've not grown for a week and it's been warm enough for things to grow during that time - then yes, replant

I’m planting my first batch of peas today too. You are so orderly in your planting of peas. I literally pour them out of the package on the soil & throw soil on top. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ Also planting my Swiss chard, mizuna, kale, spinach, & green onions. I’m behind in my planting, our weather in the Okanagan has been frigid. -3 last night! 🥶 🤣 When my new garden beds are delivered in a couple weeks I will plant my root crops. They will be late getting in the ground, but I’m sure they will catch up.

Thanks Greg As I'm in South Carolina, your dandelin advice is about a month and a half behind our schedule. "When daffodils emerge" is the rule used here at Half Acre Farm - same idea, just adapted to locale. Plus daffodils are easier to see than the early dandelions! No

Maritimer here. When is the best time to till a garden in Nova Scotia? Is today too early?

If you practice "no-till" gardening like I do you don't need to till. This bed, for instance, has never been tilled - it took me less than 5 minutes to prepare it for planting. But in any case - yes - if you must till - now is the time - although in the fall is arguably better because pest eggs (slugs etc.) get exposed to the cold & birds.

@@maritimegardening4887 Tilling is really over-rated. I went no-till a few years ago. The soil will love you for it and especially the organisms that are in the top few inches..

When I plant peas directly into the garden a slugfest takes them out as they germinate. Covering with row cover can prevent this, but I'm lazy when it comes to tucking it back in when winds rip it out. I planted my peas in TP rolls and waited until they were about 4-6 inches tall before planting out. I still have to cover these with some 1/2 inch hardware cloth bent into a V shaped tunnel to keep them off the mourning doves menu, but this allows us to get a decent crop of peas. You could do the same with peat pots, but it's difficult enough to stay away from peat products, and there's no need if one is mindful of not drenching the TP or newspaper pots in water. As I won't be setting out the plants for a couple of weeks when nights are less frosty, I find it unnecessary to have fungicide coated seed.

How can a row cover prevent slug attacks? Slugs emerge from the soil. The cover just protects the slugs from their predators.

Hey man we are a young family co citering moving to NS . How long is your growing season ? Peppers and hot crops how long do you have to grow ?

Start your seedlings right away and put outdoors in mid to late June. I got lots last year and they ripened perfectly. I'm 25 minutes north of Halifax.

Growing season is apr - nov in general for the toughest things, and june to sept for the most delicate things.

These cattle panels are really expensive aren't they. What other types of trellis work well? I have great success with growing peas but not with making the trellis. TY for the video.

What I am using is called concrete wire remesh - they cost anywhere from $12 to $20. I have other videos with cheaper options - such as a trellis made from jute twine.

Bamboo stakes work as well, but the panels, go on forever. Also branches left from pruning trees.

Ooohhh I planted my fall peas about a week too late. Ugh timing off. Here in “zone4?a?” Got plants that started to flower, I think now that it is in the low 30”s f at night I won’t get any. Saw some started and died. Should I pull up the plants or leave them overwinter? Or chop and drop?

It probably doesn't matter what you do at this point. They are probably doomed but what would hurt to just leave them go.
