Mariupol falls to Russian forces as defending troops evacuated - BBC News

The siege of Mariupol is all but over as hundreds of its Ukrainian defenders finally abandoned the steel plant where they had held out for months under relentless bombardment.
More than 260 Ukrainian soldiers, some of them seriously wounded, have left the ruins of the Azovstal steel plant and turned themselves over to Russian forces.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Ukrainian military, intelligence and negotiating teams, as well as the Red Cross and the United Nations were involved in the evacuation operation.
It’s not clear what will now happen to the Ukrainian troops. Ukraine hopes that they will be freed in an exchange with Russian prisoners.
While Russia called the operation a surrender, the Ukrainians said Mariupol’s defenders had successfully completed their mission to tie down Russian forces.

I think the point was to make the transfer sound more graceful than simply saying they surrendered. Evacuation implies leaving due to untenable circumstances. Surrender implies voluntarily admitting defeat. Both are debatably true to a certain extent. This is my take on this.

First of all, that's not how it works. War criminals get on trial for crimes they commit individually and can be proved in court, not for alleged crimes done by the group. Russian soldiers had committed war crimes and rapes in Ukraine, but that doesn't mean that you can arrest the entire Russian army based on that, you need to identify the perpetrators, and bring evidence to the court. Second, the other thing is also bullshit. The information from evacuated civilians differ based on where they are evacuated. Those who get evacuated in Russia or Russian-occupied territories say that Azov commits crimes and prevented them from leaving. Those who get evacuated to Ukraine say that Russians had been killing them indiscriminately and that they prevented them from living, and shooting at their convoys. So who is right? Well, you can't say for sure, but you can reach some conclusions based on the reality on the ground: 1. Azov fighters in Mariupol numbered around 900-1000, and they were defending the South East of Mariupol. So the idea that somehow Azov had the possibility or time to prevent civilians from living the city is ridiculous. The city on the other hand was surrounded from all directions by Russians, not Ukrainian soldiers. 2. Russia has been shelling and bombing the city since March, and transformed it into ruins, with absolutely no regard for civilian life. 3. Russia is lying a lot, about everything, and that's no secret. Russia is a propaganda machine that doesn't shy from even the most absurd declarations. We've seen in early March, Russia transported civilians from the separatist republics, in buses all the way to Melitopol to stage some scenes for the media where Russian soldiers gave food and aid to Ukrainian civilians because people in Melitopol were not cooperating. We've got reports of Russians looting the humanitarian convoys sent by Ukraine to Mariupol, stealing the food and aid, to then get videos on the internet with Russian troops distributing the same food as Russian aid to the civilians. The headline says they are being "evacuated", but the video seems to suggest that they surrendered to the Russians. It's a bit confusing. The report also said that the people are being "rescued". If you try to understand the neo nazi seeds that I mean, we can see it from the various empirical data available. And you can also see from the data compiled by OLIVER STONE (US) in the documentary entitled "UKRAINE ON FIRE" (youtube). The sequence of events that took place before the Russian Federation provided protection assistance to the people of eastern Ukraine were: the Maidan incident, a demonstration of moral flaws engineered by US and NATO intel. After the Maidan incident, the first stage of the Genocide took place against Russian speakers with political motives. In order to reduce the genocide carried out by the neo nazi gangs of western Ukraine against the people of eastern Ukraine who are Russian speakers, in 2014 the people of Donets, Luhanks, Mariupol, Crimea, Odessa, and people in several other cities then conducted a REFERENDUM with 98% results. The people of eastern Ukraine voted for AUTONOMY / INDEPENDENT and asked the Russian Federation for protection. Crimea is an area that at the beginning of the formation of the Ukrainian state was a grant, then in 2014 the Russian Federation took back Crimea. Meanwhile, Donets, Luhanks, Mariupol and several other areas still have to fight on their own from GENOCIDE for 8 years. At least 15000 more people of eastern Ukraine who have been killed by neo-nazi gangs who merged into one with the western Ukrainian army. After a period of 8 years, the Russian Federation can only seek peaceful diplomacy, and a persuasive approach to stop the genocide by the Ukrainian neo nazi gangs. It didn't even stop the western Ukrainian government from committing genocide. And it was only in February 2022 that the Russian Federation decided to provide assistance in the form of a special military operation to denazify and demilitarize western Ukraine. Each media outlet spins the narrative to suit whichever government or official powers it is being influenced/controlled by. It is to Ukraine/UK/EU/USA's advantage to always give a positive spin towards Ukraine winning to boost public local and global morale.
