It's been a while since we've gotten your opinion on the role of kayfabe/lore. What do you think about Vtuber lore nowadays? If you still think it's not very important, what do you think should be changed for Vtubers to utilize it better?

what do you think about edgy videos, and controversial ideas, not necessarily drama, but topics that people may feel strongly about? say furries/antifurries or Lolis/incest in media/ or perhaps using AI tools in content creation?

My (adhd friendly) solution is easy: Don't look at the screen when she talks. The gameplay is for show, and some people might need it to keep their concentration, but if makes the opposite effect, close your eyes, or look at a wall or the ceiling or even a door, and focus on your listening sense. That and closing my eyes usually helps me a lot to not get super focused in the gameplay or the pretty colours to the point my brain gets foggy and stops to listen. Hope this helps!!❤

I'm really liking your Mari Mondays. I've been Vtubing for about a year? Year and a half, if you count my PNGtubing days? I mostly do writing and worldbuilding content, but now I'm a character from the world! You were one of the people who taught me how to get here. Listening to you talk freeform about what is on your mind is really informative and I do actually enjoy your personality! I don't mind your personality-driven content now that I've seen a bunch of your Tutorial content. I'm sure that's how it is for other people too. I hope you get that game show still someday!

You're definitely right on a lot of these points, especially when it comes to the motivational side of things. Long story short, a lot of aspects of my life put me in a state where there are days I suddenly lose all motivation and don't know where to go. I also really liked the concept of "anime protagonist vs faceless creator", and will definitely need to find my approach to it as time goes on. If you're down to take editing criticism (constructive) for your vids though. I really like the idea of playing games in the background of you talking, but the ratio between your avatar and the game might be better if it was either 50/50 or more towards your model.

Hey, I appreciate your work; I'm glad there's someone doing precisely what you do. I just decided to take the plunge myself like a month or so ago after Fennryn clued me in to the fact that there are non-camera-based systems available (long story short, I don't like cameras), and your work has both given me a lot to think about and helped provide a sense of focus. I hope this doesn't sound like self-promotion; hearing you talk about being given a hard time about your style and content just bothers me, so I want you to know that you're appreciated. (Seriously, guys, don't subscribe, you'll just be disappointed in like six months.) Also, I like what you pointed out about the causal link between goals and motivation. Too many people fail to recognize that link, and founder as a result. Something else, too: I agree completely about wanting to see accountant/chef/mechanic/whatever VTubers. This isn't a genre. It's an entire MEDIUM. It both baffles and excites me that so few people seem to appreciate that distinction. There is so much room for development here, so much untapped potential. Anyways, good talk, hope you enjoyed reading my novel, see ya on the next video... BAKA :P

Preferences towards personalities come in all ranges, it's subjective right? It leaves me thinking that a dedicated audience would enjoy ones personality in both its highs and lows. At least that's how I enjoy my favorite channels. I also think motivation depends on what your source is for it. Be it the feedback from others, or a personal goal you've set for yourself, these sources can even change over time without being aware of it so it doesn't hurt check up on those values once in awhile to see if they're still as intended. Keep it up Mari! To me, you seem to have a likable personality and voice along with a cool character design that I appreciate. Thanks again for sharing your thoughts!

I almost never comment on videos, but I feel like I have to say something this time. A few things: do what brings you joy. I understand that you can get unmotivated when it doesn't seem like the videos you WANT to do are getting views, but just keep doing it anyways. You'll find your people. Your people will find you. I've been watching you for about 6 months now (on KZbin, I'm not a fan of Twitch). You remind me so much of my sister and you have inspired me to learn vtubing and making my own model BECAUSE of your content. I started learning to draw and how to learn Live2d BECAUSE of you. (still learning, and yes it is HARD) Your content appeals to me because although I do like anime, I don't always LIKE watching vtubers play into the anime girl thing (especially when it gets fan-service-y) because that's a bit cringe to me. A lot of people probably think that that's what they have to do to be successful, but they don't HAVE to. They CAN, it IS effective, but you don't HAVE to. Profiting on parasocial relationships are an incredibly dangerous thing and honestly, your route is much safer imo. And I enjoy your CONTENT for what it is. You are right... you could be showing your face, you could be a png tuber, but you're not. You're a vtuber and I used to play VRChat so I feel like I personally can watch Vtubers and see them as people more than most that haven't had those real interactions with people who are portraying themselves as an anime character. I think that's why some of the over the top anime girl thing feels a little cringe to me, because even seeing that you're an anime girl, I still know that you're just a person behind a desk doing your job. I lmao when I picture someone doing something over the top and silly sitting at their desk, it's honestly HILARIOUS to me. But when I wanna listen to someone real? I go to you. You have a nice comfortable aesthetic and a pleasant voice and you seem more real to me than any of the other vtubers. No shade to a lot of them, there are still a few others that I watch as well that aren't over the top, but majority I've seen are a litttttle much for me. I think it's just about finding your people. The people who are showing up and giving you hate aren't your demographic. That's how you need to see it. You need to see "okay these people are looking for Shylily, they must have accidentally stumbled into the wrong channel" (no shade on Shylily, she's gorgeous, her model is amazing, and her acting is over the top, awesome, and funny, but that's not why I watch YOU. I come HERE when I want cozy and calm. I go THERE when I want over the top and silly.) If every vtuber did exactly the same thing, it would be a huge competition as to who is the sexiest, most over the top anime girl with the biggest boba who I can *(censored)* to after I get off work... and it would be SO BORING. I could see every creator on KZbin be a vtuber and it be just fine. In fact, I think I'd prefer it because I think it WOULD be less stress. I am wanting to get into vtubing not because I want to be a vtuber, but because 1) I like the anime aesthetic and 2) I am self concious about the way I look. YOU have shown me that I don't HAVE to be an over the top crazy anime girl to start streaming what I want to stream without worrying about what people think of my face. And it's given me the creative liberties to be as cute as I want to be. Me making a vtuber is equivalent to me putting on the best makeup I can to be presentable for the camera, but only having to do it one time (or multiple times if I change my model). I can be more comfortable with doing what I want to do without worrying about a stupid face I might make, or any of those other anxieties that have prevented me from streaming in the past. I thank you for that. YOUR PEOPLE WILL COME. Stream what you wanna stream. Upload what you want to upload. Work towards your GOALS and people will come. Just be your awesome self!

Feeling I've been ""lurking" for a while now, I've really enjoyed your videos lately, I've started listening to the Mari Monday videos while driving into work in the morning after they go up which is always really nice so thank you for that lol ^^ Haven't commented though and want to change that, especially after this one lol ^^; You say you don't have a good personality for streaming/making content but, I seriously disagree. You're incredibly insightful and well spoken, you're not afraid to say some truths and talk about the tougher aspects of doing this (a lot of which no one really goes into which makes it even more valuable), yet you always manage to make things inspiring and encouraging. Combine that with, for lack of a better term the chill vibes of your videos and your really fun sense of humor and timing, honestly you're one of my favorite youtubers right now, vtuber or otherwise ^^ Both with your advice/vtuber content and the general stuff, I enjoyed your recent reddit AITA video a lot it was really fun lol ^^ It has always surprised me that more people don't use vtubing for "typical" youtube content. People use avatars/pngs, or mixed in live action/camera footage all the time, having those segments be a model instead of a png feels like a logical step. But no one's really broken that barrier like they with streaming. It's something I honestly want to try doing in my own way, and you're a big inspiration for that ^^ I've been trying to use a model more, and remember when I was editing my most recent video I kinda just had to put a png in because I couldn't think of what to include and like, from there I made it a goal to record my next while using my model whenever I do to use for those moments lol ^^ Now to actually write something lol Which, on that, I love when you discuss ADHD and how it affects things, it's something I deal with a lot so it's always interesting to hear about it lol ^^ I've kinda had the same issue as you with stream highlight type videos with some of my scripted stuff. It always feels like for every idea I have SO many random seemingly incoherent stuff I want to say and a lot of the battle isn't even writing it down but both having a coherent angle and then structuring that into something coherent to actually listen to lol, which, yeah can definitely relate to a lot of what you bring up in this video and have in the past. I remember you saying you prefer how with edited/scripted videos you can "remove the fluff and errors" and it makes making them easier than trying to do it live which God yeah felt that lol. Rambling a lot, I really enjoy your videos and the unique niche you've created ^^ I'm so sorry for everyone who's criticized you for doing something different! I think it's something to be proud of and wish MORE vtubers broke out from the typical "stream, then make highlights and clips" mold, it's both refreshing to see and incredibly natural use of vtubing! Hopefully one day it becomes more common place, vtubing as a stream thing was once a niche "weird" thing and it's grown a ton, I really think one day you'll be known as one of the trailblazers for it ^^

This video was a great listen and made me think about a lot of things in my own endeavors. I've been in the genre for almost 3 years. I started using my PNGtuber half a year before NijiEN Luxiem debuted. I have Tourette Syndrome, which shares mental aspects with ADD and Autism, and when i got my current job I lost a lot of time in used to be able to record videos while only being able to stream once per week. For half my time vtubing, I was streaming 1 or 2 times per week while uploading VoD snippets and the occasional video on YT before moving exclusively to YT. If I could pay an editor, I'm sure that would do a great deal in improving my quantity of original videos by freeing up time as well as improve the quality since I'm far from a skilled editor. But since I'm so small that I can't even monetize in any form, such expense would come out-of-pocket. And since I'm engaged to get married within the next several months, that's just not very feasible. Gotta allocate my money not just for my own endeavors, because the responsible thing is to keep the near-future wife's needs in mind. As such, I feel kinda stuck. No matter what, my growth has been glacial and I have yet to find a niche where I can thrive. Male vtubers who, like me, don't do BFE or crass/risqué stuff seem to have very little audience demand in the vtuber scene. I've seen many say that. To be a successful male vtuber, you have to follow in the footsteps of people like Niji Luxiem and Shxtou or drop all vtuber-isms and be more like non-vtuber content creators. Because being a vtuber gives men like me no benefits, but rather may be a detriment compared to being a webcam user. This is very similar to what you said regarding the path that you've taken in your content creation, being more closely related to a normal KZbinr rather than a cartoon character on screen playing video games. I also enjoy doing contact to where I get to talk and share my thoughts on various topics, such as in my podcast, however that content does not get nearly as many views as I would like while some of my lower effort content and Shorts have blown up very mildly. All this is to say, I'm approaching 3 years of consistent content creation this July, and I still don't know what my niche is. Let alone if there even is a niche for me at all. And I'm not sure how to find a niche where I can actually grow while remaining true to myself.

Hey Mari, great vid. I agree with all you said, & it got me thinking about what niches I could fill. It inspired me to create a whole new document in my Notes app about it, so now I've got more ideas for streams than just playing video games. I love your Mari Mondays!💞 :D If I had any questions, it would maybe be your opinion on starting streaming before you've made (or in others case's comissioned) your model. Do you think the transition from pngtuber to live2d model would work well? Or is that the sort of thing it is better to wait on, even if one does plan to stay in the slightly more faceless content creator genre? I've seen some do it, but they all seem to be well established before they do so.

I enjoyed the interview last time, it's interesting to know about kaigai idols and you really did great there especially because i could see your genuine enthusiasm for the topic. you were playing the cute and curious anime catgirl interviewer role really well, so i don't think you're an uninteresting streamer at all and i find you rather fun! and this is coming from a traditional holo/niji fan who branched off to liking indie vtubers content. and as for your streams being unsuccessful, I used to be a game dev and i feel like your situation has become similar to game devs trying to appeal to other devs instead of players, so when you try to do something that would appeal to players, it wouldn't interest the devs. I just think if you keep doing a content you genuinely prefer over tutorials, you'll find success through it, but i understand it's not that simple and it will take time. I just wish you the best all in all and sending you lots of positive vibes!

I never really thought about the png vs live model. I would think it is uncanny valley and it did take me a bit of getting us to. I don't know if it is linked to anything but I found it was easier for me to watch when the model was simpler. NGL this sucks because so much at time, money, and attention to detail is spent on models. I only noticed this because it would be easier to watch someone like Kenji do video game content with his uh . . . Special model? The one with the bent out of shape neck. It is pretty flat with not much detail to it. Just food for thought. It's so weird to think about. Also I would definitely watch a business vtuber omg that would be so much fun!

To add on what Mari said about why a lot of people in the west doesn't watch/ like vtubers. When I've asked people I know a lot of the answers has been that unlike "fleshtubers" it's difficult to get invested in them as a real person and it's hard to get involved in the same way it is with yogscast (for example). I personally think that a lot of vtuber content is similar to what they do, but since it's not a real person apparently some people have a harder time relating to them or being invested because they don't actually know who or what kind of person it really is. I've never really agreed with this myself because idk people can still lie about who they are and it's not like I know any of them personally anyway so why does it matter if it's a cute anime girl or a fleshtuber?

It’s very a lying because I really want to do these stuffs but I just get bored easily. The best I have done is using Spirit City Lofi game to help work on tasks but it’s not always effective. Might just use the good old have a script/plan but treat it as a guideline for what I’m doing. Maybe this way I’ll actually make videos

Wow a KZbinr who enjoys reading comment novels? Sweet. Ironically I don't have a ton to say for once. lol I originally found your channel through the tutorial content, fell out of touch for awhile, then came back. Sometimes it's a bit embarrassing to admit getting stuck in the planning phase instead of having a library of videos. I really don't like video editing, but am trying to get better at it. For some reason text editing doesn't bother me as much. I enjoy you doing this style of video a lot. A question I sometimes ask myself is if someone has a character, but does things outside the niche standard, are they still a VTuber? Or are they a person that just happens to have an avatar? I think the conclusion I've reached thus far is that while I want some things to be silly and anime, sometimes I just want content to be content. A blog post is a blog post, regardless of if it was written by an anime girl or a person. (Although a role-playing anime blog could be funny)

You know, the point about anime style being predominant is a big one for me, since I'm one of the rare breed of Vtuber fans that isn't a weeb. In fact, not being a weeb was what kept me out of the scene for the longest time, only occasionally watching pippa clips that friends sent me, or Nux being on Some Ordinary Podcast. It was people like PumpkinPotion using a golden age of animation aesthetic, or the like, that helped me ease into it more. More art styles would probably get more new blood into the scene, tbh.

I can see how vtubing has changed from being a single community as a niche to one with niches within it. It sorta reminds me of the Brony fandom for the first 2 seasons where everyone was into the show but after the shorter season 3 with a larger hiatus the fandom's attention turned inwards. Instead of everyone liking the show and talking about the new episode weekly, it fragmented to people who liked the show and people who liked fan content. And not everyone consumed the same content so you'd have people into the music side, or just the art, or who follow specific creators like Fluffle Puff. Vtubing feels the same where everyone watched vtubers stream but now you're getting subsections of like people who follow a certain vtuber's music or art but not watch their streams. Or people that only consume clips of a certain streamer but never an actual stream. I liked your idea of a financial vtuber as I feel a majority of vtubers do it for fun and don't know much about saving money on models, riggers, building into streaming slowly instead of just dumping thousands to jump right into the deep end only to realized they don't even wanna be streamers. I like all of Mari's content really from the overly exaggerated anime style reactions to chat to the ones where you're more real. Personally the reason I like the drama videos isn't just because I like the tea but because I like YOUR takes on it. I like hearing you roast someone from a perspective I didn't think about, but also defending people in ways I didn't consider. Like in one instance when someone was being called out you pointed out why what they did was bad, but also why it was understandable and you may have done similar things in the past. I'm surprised you say you don't have a likeable personality because honestly you're the kinda person I'd love to hear yap about all kinds of situations. Commented because got to the section of how you take more from the comments than you do views and likes. I watch most of your videos but forget to comment sometimes, or don't feel like I have much to add to that conversation. Also Sims 2 on gba was such a fever dream and this video reminded me about playing it as a kid.

I too feel like my content is shit, and could be better, i have a few ideas that would take a long time to execute in my head, but i feel stuck in the vtuber paradigm, as it kinda works and my audience seems to appreciate me, but i'm not growing, engaging people in chat is fairly easy for me because i know its what i'd want, but also being a furry fox. there are many things i'd like to do but i'm also working many jobs as well and i'm struggling to plan a schedule atm. i think your style of engagement is smart, i usually focus on things that make people angry enough to give their opinion lol. controversy sells, and i like some of it, but yeah youtube encourages comments and i haven't been taking that seriously, i've just been making shit posts and content i think is cool and that i can make in an afternoon

maybe it's just me, but i think that anime in the west is the biggest that ever was. And if you are a Vtuber i feel you automatically target a more younger demographic. I am not a vtuber but i do watch a couple and i find it fascinating how they work.

The fact that people are out here telling Mari she's not a "real vtuber" because she makes normal youtube videos, means that vtubing is absolutely cooked. Like, what do people think the "tuber" part of vtuber means?

I always watch you on my other account because it has KZbin premium but leave a comment and like the video using this account and hey, I didn't even subscribe here yet 😂 I have been a VTuber for a while and I do love anime and all that stuff but acting as an anime girl is just really not my cup of tea. I am not diagnosed with ADHD but I have the same problem. Lists don't help. I always want to do content that you are doing but I struggle to get myself to make the content I want in KZbin. Anyway, I have been looking into getting a video editor for myself in the future and hopefully that thought of someone needing money and projects for me will finally give me a kick in the arse to kick start things! I just want to let you know I appreciate your videos ever since you rebranded from a potato chip eating blonde anime girl. 🙏

What she said only applies to male "vtubers". A woman liking anything is seen as cool.

U don't really comment much in general because I'm very chat if and that always spells over into my comments and online chats, so I try to keep commenting at a minimum because i really don't want people to think badly of me just cause I act a little koocoo. I have pretty bad adhd and I cannot focus for very long and am super hyper, unless I just woke up, and so I act very crazy all the time and it's hard to be normal on a comment section, especially on an account not linked to yourself, but I get a lot of hate irl for my hyperness and I don't want that on any mutiperson communication online because I already have a hard time irl fecing that sorta stuff. Sorry about this being superlong....

Whoever gets annoyed at you being hyper doesn't deserve you in their life. I had to learn this lesson the hard way, & teach myself how to have more confidence in myself, & have more self-worth than others think I deserve, because they don't know me, therefore they don't get a say in my worth. Granted, I don't know you, but I'm sure you've got a lot of great qualities, & you don't deserve to be put down just for being yourself, hyperactive or not. You've just gotta find those who will like you just the way you are. Like Dr. Seuss said, "Be who you are, & say what you feel, for those who mind don't matter, & those who matter don't mind."
