Regarding shifting. If you push straight up with an open palmed hand it will go straight from 2nd to 3rd. You would have to force it to go anywhere else. Same with 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 4th. It's all in the shifter mechanism and linkage.

My buddy and I bought a 71 roadrunner 4 speed 383 years ago he needed the engine for his 70 superbee the shifter was differently mounted on an upsweep bracket from the front mount actually putting the shifter over the cross member inside the car

1973 was the first year for the C10 Chevy Truck to have a 7.4 454 SWB. Late 1972 C10’s came with LS5 .7.4 454 BB. then came with 402.BB.6.5-6.6. Early ordered 1979 SWB - C10’s came 454 BB. Late was only offered 350-5.7 In the BIG 10. 2003 F250 - F350 came with the Last of the 7.3 Power stroke Diesal’s 2003 early trucks came with the, 7.3 Power stroke or the 6.0 Diesal Power Stroke Diesal .. WRONG! The 402 replaced the 396 and the 454 replaced the 402. There was never a 454 before the 402 and CST - Cheyenne Super Truck - trucks never came with a 454. 396 and 402 only. Nor did Chevy ever put a 454 in a C10 until the SS454 and that was a C1500. Nor could you get any big-block in a 4WD until '73 and that was in K30s. Big-blocks won't even fit in 4WDs '72 and earlier. If you see a '72 or earlier big-block truck it's probably a '72 or earlier body on a '73-up chassis and THOSE have to be shortened for the pre-'72 LWB wheelbase.
