As a Villa fan I love Paul McGrath but his performance v Italy in the 1994 world cup was extraordinary.

One of the best centre backs of all time. If he had been Brazilian or Italian he would’ve been acknowledged as such and easily made their national teams. God bless Paul McGrath

Back in around 1993-4, Paul McGrath used to go "walkabout", where he didn't turn up at Villa Park. On one such occasion, he'd been missing for 2 weeks. Anyway, me and 2 lady friends were on Broad Street one Wednesday night/Thursday morning around 4am, because we'd been to Snobs and were told there was an all night chippy on Broad Street . We couldn't find the chippy and everything including the clubs were now closed .Then a door opens and Mark Bosnich and Paul exit in to the street. The area is dead due to it being mid week, so we were pretty much the only people around. Paul invites my lady friends back to (wherever, Mark's probably) but they declined. So Paul and Mark crossed the road and got into Mark's Rover Sterling and drove off. I was gobsmacked, not because I met them, but that Mark had a Rover Sterling which just seemed at odds with what a footballer would own.

Correct. And this is the point i keep forgetting to make. Paul McGrath played against a lot of quality in a decent Ireland side, but one who were often outgunned! Except for him,he never looked out of his depth or outclassed,he had that ability to look in control and the opposition knew it& were fully aware..But I just don't think he was!!

I was eleven years old at the time. We just moved to the states a month before the World Cup. We had tickets to the Italy and Mexico match. My mother wanted to get a head start to Orlando and take us boys to Universal and Disney while my father would meet up with us after. 28 years later and I still have not forgiven her.

@@bk1147 Me too. Sat behind some clueless Italian Americans way up in the gods behind our goal, first half. Did you go the the party afterwards? Fucking brilliant, all free and everybody who was anybody from Ireland was there. The whole team, Eamon Coghlan, Dick Spring, Albert Reynolds. Chatted to Gary Kelly for ages, being a Leeds fan, and Big Jack was a gentleman. Nearly forgot, Larry Mullin bought our group a round of drinks and stayed for a chat.
