I have 6 vintage Mark Cross bags including a Grace and a Ginny. The quality is superb. Those bags are older than me but the leather, the stitches, everything is still top notch. I wish the brand was more known, though it's great as a connoisseur brand to retain its cachet.

Dear Anesu, what a wonderful video once again. It is very impressive how well you present a brand, its history, quality, value and frank , professional comparison to other brands. I never saw a Mark Cross bag but I am curious to see how they are, but I am still bias to my Italians brands...since you mentioned Loro Piana, as an update, I bought a second Loro Piana Sesia bag ( this time mini size and smooth leather) and you are absolutely right, it is so buttery soft to the touch. The stitching and hardware are impeccable. No big logos which is very important to me. By the way, I love the location where you are vacationing and you look stunning with this flowing shirt and sunglasses! Enjoy your peaceful time, well deserved.

Thank you for this wonderful exploration of Mark Cross. I purchased my first Mark Cross bag on Worth Avenue, Palm Beach when, in high school, I worked in another shop down the Avenue. I knew nothing about the history of Mark Cross yet walked into that MC shop and found an amazing small crossbody/shoulder, black, quality bag. I *loved* that bag and wore it mightily throughout the 1990s until a strap broke and years later after almost constant wear because I loved it so much. What I liked was the quality and efficiency of the bag (it held everything); the brand's discreteness, not showy, as it moved beyond my early need for brands/logos -- the Louis Vuitton or Gucci logos that I had to have back when. I now find them crass/gauche. Yes, so I bought a Louis Vuitton and a Gucci while working on Worth Avenue, but they didn't last as long as the Mark Cross in terms of being on trend. Impeccable bag and brand.

FYI: I am also a film scholar and regularly teach REAR WINDOW. Grace Kelly's character, Lisa Fremont, offers a series of "how to behave with bags/purses" in that film. The overnight briefcase is an attempt to overshoot the Hollywood production code: it's business made personal or personal made business. And, she doesn't stay the night! In a later scene, she first detects a murder happens across the way, as only a 50s "woman" could understand, because no wife would ever, ever keep her jewelry in a purse all tangly! Mrs. Thorwald must be dead! Oh my! It's the purse/pocketbook/handbag etiquette film!

The bag is an expressive prop for a desire to mediate professional and personal given the ambiguities concerning Jeff's and Lisa's relationship at that point.The "Grace K bag" comes from a film, REAR WINDOW. As a prop in a film, it has all kinds of narrative functions. Might want to check out the film, fyi, to appreciate the bag's importance in film/American culture. Plus, it's a super fun scene when Lisa opens the bag, and Jeff is overwhelmed!

The Mark Cross trunk bags look to be a little better in quality to the Brandon Blackwood versions, which seem to lean more towards trendy styles than overall quality.

Yes 100% Brandon Blackwood and Mark Cross are worlds apart they are in two different levels of luxury. BB is vegan leather and will never age or last like real leather which mark cross is.

They seem sturdy despite their age, with more exotic-looking skins available.

Thank you! It’s an everyday luxury brand, uses top grain and real leather as they process their leathers for the exotic look. Seemingly well made if you are seeing them in consignment stores and they are fairly sturdy … I wouldn’t hesitate if you are interested x

Hi I have a Mark cross soft leather briefcase it has a leather which is somewhat oval in shape and it has the name Mark Cross with a lion's head on top do you suppose you could tell me about when that would have come out? They are Scottish made in Spain. Nice bags but I’m not a huge fan of colour painted on as opposed to dyed leather. When the bag scuffs you see the white base underneath.

I forgot to include that I made my first Valextra purchase in NYC in 2015 (a backpack). However, The company closed the store down due to low traffic. Then They reopened one in Miami, and again that store is out of business. Now, they only have one store in the U.S, and that’s in Hawaii. Valextra stores don’t do well in the U.S for some reason; people in the states are not familiar with the brand, I guess.

Lol I know what you mean but that’s the quirk you sometimes pay for with under the radar brands! Mark Cross to me is not about perfection but being a quintessential American luxury brand with warts and all! Look at the writing for a start!

hand stitching by people who run machines is not straight/line cut. makes me love the brand even more: not mass manufactured. imperfections mean that people make the bags not machines -- to be adored not dismissed. the hand of a human is on a bag's creation!
