Europe is developing talent using the soccer club model. Luka Doncic entered the Real Madrid program at age 13. lol does this also apply to all the Man City & Madrid fans (given the generalization of your comment on all sports)? As a German I can certify this comment as cap. While it’s true that European sports teams tend to have a deeper cultural/ historical connection to the region they’re in (unlike in the US where teams will often rotate cities), saying that fans don’t watch the sport to be entertained is ridiculous. There’s a difference between passion & obsession, and I don’t think classifying fans in Europe as obsessed is a proper classification

Love Cuban but I'm sorry to say that's too basic (high level) of an analysis. Not enough practice? I'm privileged to have played pretty much all around (Spanish middle school, American HS, Spanish national team under ages, American university, Spanish and French pro divisions)... and it is definitely not a matter of practicing more or less. My clear conclusion was the lack of overall diversity and ball knowledge of American coaches and assistants. Running extremely basic plays, practicing repetitive sets without clear focus on what is trying to be improved, sticking to very 'old school' approaches to the game and/or over relying on 1:1 basketball. 'IQ' is not enhanced simply by 'practicing more', but by practicing better

@@fdhfghfgrhrrth There were some very athletic players in Europe, its not really the issue here. The issue is the game here is taught and played differently. Played differently like this, first its all about the team, second coach is the law not players or stars, and third win is what matters and not your personal stats. And now about learning game, at least I can say of when I played and when I was kid which was when Kukoc played in Chicago (he is from my home town), every single player learned post moves be it big or small, everyone learned tactic, everyone learned how to pass the ball efficiently, how to minimize mistakes and turnovers, shooting FT's. We worked a lot on those basic skills and if coach would see you try some flashy move more time than not it was bench time. In US youngsters are more focused on highlights, flashy dunks or assists, breaking ankles and shooting deep threes. Dont get me wrong those are all skills but its way of skipping the game of basketball, skipping the tactics. Kids get athletic and to fast, they move into drive to fast and committed and can't stop any more. Its a game of basketball not just sprint or high jump competition. To much speed without control usually create mistakes and prevents you from reading game good.

Embiid is not a European player. Never played in Europe. One year in college + NBA. French threw citizenship at him hoping he would play for their national team. He was more interested in a gold medal. Are we that prone to generalizations that an African is called a European player? An African-born superstar who modeled his game after one of the greatest African players of all time, Hakeem 'the Dream' Olajuwon. It's time to acknowledge that Africa is going to be the next basketball powerhouse. And welcome it. And foster it. And acknowledge it. And discuss it.
@thomaswargnier2562
@thomaswargnier2562 Ай бұрын
I was a bit shocked that he included Embid among the European players. Indeed Embid is Cameroonian, American and only got the French citizenship a few years ago but has himself never lived here. That being said I'd like to correct your assessment. If France and mostly the French basketball federation was really keen on the potential of having Embid play for the national team, he himself, at the time, showed that he was eager to achieve the same goal. Here's an abstract of the letter he sent to no other than French President, Emmanuel Macron: « Après discussions avec la Fédération française de Basket-ball, mon choix est désormais arrêté. Je souhaite engager les démarches pour obtenir une naturalisation française et ainsi être sélectionnable avec les Bleus. Je ne souhaite en conséquence jouer pour aucune autre équipe nationale. » If you don't read French, it says: "After talking with the French basketball federation, my choice is made. I wish to start the process to get the French citizenship that would allow me to get selected by the French national team. Thus, I don't want to play for any other national team." As the saying goes, it takes two to tango, and Embid was very much part of it. I guess he then decided that he had better odds to win the Olympics by playing for the US. I think it was the right choice. He has more links to the US than to France. It would have felt weird to see him play for a country that he doesn't really know even if it would have been a major addition to the French team.

It's also a cultural thing.. Americans are way more used to playing basketball as a streetgame which means they play more on their own responsibility and have to rely on themselves (hence the handles and athletisism) while you see a lot less basketball on the streets of europe which therefore means that euros play more in a controlled and coached environment (hence less entertaining and more IQ). On top of that there is also the cultural difference in how the braging/trash talking and entertainment is viewed on the two continents. In europe these things are more frowned upon which means you're less rewarded for selfish behaviour even if it's entertaining.. heck they tried to put on Helene Fischer (a very popular german singer) as a halftime show in a Bundesliga game once and it was a disaster for her. The entire crowd just whistled and booed for the entire performance so no matter how popular, euros don't wanna see anything but athletes at a sporting event.

U don;t even need to go to the whole World…Europe has a 500m population vs. 350m in the USA…a European All-Star team with Doncic, Jokic, Wemby, Giannis, Dennis, Gobert, Porzingis and the depth of the non-NBA talent in the European league would look better than a US-only All-Star team…

Cuban’s 1st point is not valid : 5 of the last 6 are from Europe, which although is OUTSIDE the US, nonetheless is NOT THE WORLD either. USA and Europe is roughly the same population, and you could even argue that Basketball has more market share in the US than in Europe. So no, you can’t say it’s in big part à question of statistics and demographics

As an American born from European parents, I can see what he’s saying….although I totally identify as an American I have noticed for 50 years now that there seems to be something a little different about me, sort of humble/efficient/intelligent that gives me an edge. I’ve always been able to outsmart and outwork my peers any time I feel like it. I often start slow, get overlooked, sometimes get made fun of….but the longer time goes by and the tougher the job gets, the more consistently I end up rising above those around me. That said, I love our freedom and diversity here, I love the fun and showmanship, and I think there’s plenty of room for everyone to do things their own way. Life is to be enjoyed, we’re all in this together, not everyone can be a star, not everyone needs to be a millionaire. Relax. All good 😊

Popularity of a sport is much more important than population size, basketball is almost non-existent in many european countries, for example here in Switzerland 90% of people couldn't name you a single basketball player outside of Kobe and the biggest basketball games here get like 300 spectators in a good year. If population size was really that important China and India would dominate most sports, but look at China for example they have 1.5 billion people and pumped 10 billion dollars per year into football with the goal to become a top football nation, but they can't even qualify for the world cup, they just lost 7:0 against Japan a few weeks ago lol.

I don’t understand why people can’t just accept a flaw and adjust. International players are coming and are coming hard. US players need to improve When you say that, you always ear a « but »….but we are still the best…but we won…but more of the best players are still from the US…but…but.. People totally miss the point because they can’t handle a constructive criticism. People need to see it like this: if US kids combine their athleticism with the euro IQ, it will be game over for the next 100 years. That’s all…. And if they don’t, in the 25 years to come, the table will be flipped.

Cuban said it. It's 330 million people against the rest of the world. Long term, MVPs were going to be foreigners. What KD doesn't understand is that they win because they're lucky Europe is not one (or two or three) big country (or countries). That's the only reason they get a medal, sheer country size.

Lets get a few facts straight about why the U.S. is rightfully saying it has the best National team. The U.S. has 343 million inhabitants and a long tradition in playing basketball. Is a National sport together with football and baseball so kids play it everywhere and a youth league slash College system is established. Of course they produce amazing palyers. But making a comparison with Europe is not possible because the US had never to compete with a European team as there is no European All Star team. Andssoccer is national Sport number 1,2, and 3 in most European countries and that is why they dominate it, but thats a different story. There are 27 different Basketball National Teams in the EU. Germany has 80 million people and some great NBA players. France has 60 million people and some great NBA players. Same goes for Spain. Greece has 10 million people and some great NBA palyers. Serbia has only 7 million people which is 2% of the US population but has an MVP. Slovenia has 2 million people but has an MVP. So if you want to make a fair comparison you imagine an European All Star team and then expect them to be dominated by the US Boys? No freaking way! The US Boys may dominate single European nations but against an EU allstar team those games would be tight for the US boys to win. The question why Europe has produced great NBA players is also becuase Euro leauge basketball is a tough league to compete in. NBA is of higher quality but the difference is not huge anymore. Euro leauge is tough and players who dominate there also often can dominate in NBA. Especially you get tackled much harder in Europe and supporters/fans can be intense so you are under high pressure when you play Euro league basketball. Just put Luka, The Greek Greak, Joker, Schröder, Wagner, Wembanyama, and many other great European players ina team and you have a fair match between US and Europe.

In terms of knowledge of the game and training methods the rest of the world has caught up with the US, however from what I see, basketball is still a small sport in most countries all over the world,so that’s always a disadvantage for other countries to compete consistently. A bit like Americans playing soccer, there’s not enough passion and not enough players in the base of the pyramid to steadily rise to excellence.

Cuban: “We have the best players. It’s not even close.”. Isn’t it? Because the best four players in the planet are not from the US: Jokic, Giannis, Luka, and Embiid. And the best younger player is European. Additionally, with the NIL deals, the US colleges have attracted a ton of young European players that would normally be playing in Eurolrague soon, and chances are they’ll play in the NBA in some capacity. So the lower levels will be talents from outside of the US, too. Which is a good thing. It would make for a bigger audience abroad.

Usa had to put together a squad of collectively the best 15 players they’ve ever been able to to win the Olympics and it wasnt a walk in the park. They even felt they had to get Embiid who isn’t American. That was against teams who had at most one world class player on their squad. If that doesn’t tell you what the landscape is then nothing ever will. In 1-2 decades the NBA will be at LEAST 40% international players and that number will only grow. The developmental system in America is archaic and the culture of individualism in America sports combined with the inability to get over the obvious superiority complex will mean it’s inevitable. There’s a reason why USA don’t dominate team sports that have high participation worldwide.
