Every time I hear "I vow to thee to the my country", I think of my dear father who joined the British army as an apprentice at 14 on the death of both his parents. He fought throughout the WWII with the REME (Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers), very often front line repairing AA guns. The war took him to North Africa against Rommel, Crete, Italy (the terrible battle of Monte Casino), France and Germany. This song makes me so proud of him (he was actually presented to the King for a DCM medal). The only time I ever saw him cry was on the death of Churchill. This song always makes me cry....

Although I am a monarchist, i wish we could change our national anthem to I Vow To Thee My Country. It’s such a beautiful melody and words and written by an Englishman, the music too (Gustav Holst was British despite the name). Our normal national anthem God Save our Gracious Queen/King is used by many countries in differing patriotic forms. England tends to use the hymn Jerusalem as its anthem at sporting events but I think I Vow To Thee My Country is head and shoulders above those two.

They're all really good but I can totally see it
@Autofleet44292 жыл бұрын
I disagree, I don't think it should be our national anthem because "I vow to thee my country" is used as a remembrance hymn to remember and honour our dead using it as a national anthem would take away from that. What we need is a completely new song one that has no history that can be misinterpreted, one that can be made to represent the whole union. all four countries and all Britons regardless of their history.

Hello Mark. Well, how was that? You can imagine how pleased I was to see they opened with this hymn. I thought what better way for your first viewing of the service than this and smiled. I am so looking forward to watching your reaction to the whole service my friend. Huw Edwards narrating adds a certain solemnity to the whole occasion. I could listen to his voice forever as he goes through the story of various battles and family reminiscences. Hope you enjoy. God bless you and your family. Sam.

There is another version of this sung by Ramin Karimloo, in an empty hall during the lockdowns (2020 I think), which I think is possibly even better. I think both men sing amazingly, but the emptiness of the hall when Ramin sang made it extra moving.

Its very different. They were / are huge musical stars but Ramin is far more flamboyant ...even his charactrs are ..Luke has an amazing voice ive seen him many times on stage. As i have Ramin. Theyre both beautiful tenors with equal talent but very differant. Ramin is the bdst Phantom ever. Luke was fantastic in Miss Saigon, hes far more natural. I prefer Luke...why? This is purely personal but hes a far far better actor. Ramin is a wonderful singer and such a lovely lovely man...full of fun...like Luke...funny musical actors tend to be so nice, but Ramin overacts a bit like many musical theatre actors. I think sometimes hes slightly manic...but his voice..superb... Together theyre perfection😂
