Honolulu means sheltered bay (“hono” meaning bay and “lulu” meaning shelter, calm, protection). the ancient people of Hawai’i named it this because Honolulu is a broad sheltered and calm bay (just google “Honolulu” and you will see it). on the other hand, “hana” means work or job. pronouncing it as “Hana-lulu” changes its entire meaning to “sheltered work” which wouldn’t make any sense at all much less depict the actual place.
