Mark Reynolds Hughes (January 1, 1956 -- May 21, 2000) was an American businessman who was founder, chairman and CEO of Herbalife International Ltd.
EARLY LIFE
Mark was born on January 1, 1956 to father Stuard Hartman (not "Stuart", per Birth certificate) and mother Jo Ann Hughes (d. 27-Apr-1975, overdose). The eldest of three boys, Mark grew up in Camarillo, California with brothers Kirk Hartman and Guy Hartman (d. Guy passed in 1994, fm alcohol abuse) Kirk Hartman, still alive, lives in Los Angeles, Ca. Both of Mark's brothers worked for Herbalife for many years prior to Mark's death.
BIOGRAPHY
In February 1980, aged 24, Hughes founded Los Angeles-based Herbalife International. It has since become one of the world's largest distributors of herbal products through network marketing, with sales of about $3.5 billion in 2007 and 2.1 million Independent Distributors in 75 countries and record retail sales of $4.3 billion in 2010 according to company statements.
In 1994. Mark and Suzan Hughes started the Herbalife Family Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping children. The Herbalife Family Foundation and its sister organization, the International Herbalife Family Foundation, have donated more than $5 million to children's causes worldwide. Created in 1994 by Herbalife Founder Mark Hughes, Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF) creates partnerships with charities to help meet the nutritional needs of children at risk. At the same time, HFF is there to provide funds to organizations assisting victims of natural disasters. HFF is a global non-profit organization working in communities around the world. In 2007 the Herbalife Family Foundation established the HFF Humanitarian Award to recognize Herbalife Independent Distributors who exemplify the foundation's mission and, through their outstanding involvement and dedication, have made a significant contribution to changing lives though community service. The honoree is announced at the Herbalife Honors event.
Hughes often stated that his mother died of an accidental overdose of prescription diet pills when he was 18, which he claimed was the impetus for founding Herbalife.
Mark Hughes died at age 44 of an accidental overdose of alcohol and doxepin, an anti-depressant.[2][3] He died while married to Darcy LaPier to whom he was married for a very short time.[4]
Before his marriage to Lapier, Hughes was married to Suzan Hughes for 10 years. Suzan is the mother to their only son, Alexander.
To the surprise of many, after Mark Hughes death, his attorney Conrad Klein assumed control of all Hughes' ventures including Herbalife, The Herbalife Family Foundation and The Mark Hughes Trust.
In 2006, The Los Angeles Superior Court suggested the potential removal of the Custodian of The Mark Hughes Trust, Jack Reynolds, for the possibility that he may have ceded control of $40,000,000 to Conrad Klein.

Very Sadden about the Death of Mark Hughes so many years ago. Scripture says, I wish above all things that you prosper and be in health even as your soul prospers. I'm sure there was an over whelming pressure to be the head of herbal life. Maybe inner pain and emptiness inside. I am convinced even more today that only Jesus satifies your soul. Joel Osteen says, Put God first place and he will take you to places you never thought were possible. Yes make money but lets work on the inside of ourselves. This way when you make the money its no big deal. Its just paper. Your real joy is in God.

I remember the day in a kitchen at a party ... I met Mark Hughes... not yet the founder of Herballife... months later he came with a plastic baggie and said... "see this... it will make me rich" I laughed as it looked like a bag of cocaine, but instead a protein powder... he and Don Grenough started selling out of the truck of his car, biggest mistake I ever made, not to join, as he wanted me too, We remained friends thru all his marriages, in fact at a few of them, said I looked like him Mom.

So many opinions but they ddnt really meet work and get to know who reaally Mark Hughes was. None of these people have done anything to change people's lives. He did ,no matter how imperfect he was. Mark had integrity and he delivered all his promises.

(Part 5) Jo Ann “illness in 1969” mentioned in this clip was actually drug related near-death experience. By that time Mark’s parents separated and Jo Ann was not in position to take care of the boys (Mark had 2 brothers) due to her heavy addiction. She would not get up from bed for days. The house was so filthy and dirty that her parents had to take over care of three boys. Mark Hughes himself had drinking problems at the age of 14. He was “experimenting with drugs” as well.

(Part 3) Mark would not qualify for “from rags to riches” story because there were no “rags” to start with. His father Stuard Hartman was successful businessman. He was an entrepreneur in a business of supplying aircraft parts to the U.S. government. Mark enjoyed more riches than rags. According to Mark’s childhood friends “he always had the best toys, the best stuff, the best clothes”.

(Part 2) According to The Los Angeles County coroner's office he died of a toxic combination of alcohol and Doxepin, an antidepressant he was taking to help him sleep. His blood-alcohol level was measured at 0.21, more than 2 1/2 times the legal limit for driving. This level of alcohol could be tolerated by people who practiced having alcohol daily for a long period of time. Hence: alcoholics. Mark’s younger brother Guy Hartman also died young at age 37, after years of alcohol abuse (Dec 1994).

(Part 4) Mark’s father adamantly denies that late Jo Ann (Mark’s mum) had a weight problem. "This whole story is not true," he insists. But she did have a problem. "She was addicted to pain pills," Hartman says, singling out the popular painkillers Darvon and Percodan, which have never been prescribed for weight loss. "She used them in combination to prolong the high." So - there you have it. Mark’s mom was drug addict.

(Part 7) Stuard Hartman was not good enough to Mark so he has been replaced with much better father figure found in Jack Reynolds. Mark was saying that Jack was his father!!! At the same time Stuard Hartman stood by Mark when approached by dirt - digging reporters. At the time of Marks big success the only loose end to his story was estranged father who could’ve spill the beans and tell the world how full of cr@p is Mark’s story was. But he didn’t. He stood by his boy.

(Part 6) By the age of 19 (when his mother died) he was completely out of control. It was in rehab centre called CEDU where he was working on getting his life back that he met his future business partners and Helbalife co-founders. And lastly: Mark’s broken his father’s heart. He blamed him for his parent’s marriage breakdown and accused him for leaving the family. When it comes to Stuard Hartman Mark went too far.
