Mark Levinson № 5909 Review: Does Pricey Mean Better Sound?

Mark Levinson № 5909 is one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive pair of Bluetooth headphones on the market right now. It has LDAC, aptX Adaptive, and comes with all the accessories in the box to enjoy your music. At around £1000, it's pricey, but does that mean you get better sound quality than the less pricey Bluetooth headphones?

I own the 5909 and it is sublime. While I have not heard the Focal Bathy I can tell you that when it's battery eventually dies, at this time there is no option to replace or service the headphone. Maybe down the road such an option will exist to have the Bathy serviced for $100-$200. When the battery dies in the 5909 on the other hand, it will still work as a wired headphone, which is where it really shines. The Focal is solely a wireless headphone so the corded option doesn't exist. Battery replacement of the 5909 is the same deal as with the Bathy.

I had the opportunity to try the 5909s, Px8s, Bathys, B&O H95 and Solitaire back to back for nearly an hour at the store. The 5909’s literally wiped the floor in terms of sound. Not even a contest. In one word “unreal”! I would play very familiar songs to me and I could hear sounds I could not hear before. Orchestral music feels so alive and detailed. The clarity is sublime and the instrument separation is something I haven’t experienced on a wireless ANC headphones before. Needless to say, I am saving up money to get them by the end of August, can’t stop thinking of them. :)

Haha amazing. I'm currently trying the Bathys and I have to say for me, I'd take it over the 5909

@@GadgetsBoy strange, I found the Bathys completely uninspiring and not worthy of its price tag. Even the Px8s which cost less sound better and more complete. But that’s my take anyway.

@gpapa31 thing with sound is it's subjective. My preference and hearing will be different to yours but if say both 5909 and bathys are up there for me

@@GadgetsBoythe other advantage for the 5909s is that they can play like regular powerless passive plug and play headphones with max resolution. The Bathys don’t think they can do that. So once the battery life is dead (if not replacable) you are left with expensive ear muffs

My story is I bought Mark Levinson 5909 headphones. Very careful home use 1-2 times during the week. After 6 months, the leather parts around the head came off. The glue is bad. Now I have to look for a solution to this problem. Hey guys from Mark Levinson, how do you like this quality of headphones for over 1000 USD. The headphones sound great. The quality of the construction is terrible. I do not recommend it.

DO NOT BUY.. These headphones have excellent sound and comfort BUT..The headband falls apart within a few months. I have had one return pair already and now the second pair has the same problem, The headband is not stitched as it looks like it is. It is badly GLUED. I don't see much point in sending the second pair back, as this will go on till the warranty runs out. For $1000 this issue with exceptional sound is very shoddy work. I tried to write reviews on sites recommending these, but all were all closed to customer reviews.
