Thank you for mentioning the brutal massacre in Drogheada where he burnt women and children alive in cathedral. He never took limerick though too rough even then women threw rocks at him from the walls. In our history he is seen as a brutal butcher and sociopath.

Sir Thomas Fairfax was THE commander of the new model army when it was formed over the winter of 1644/45 and Cromwell was his deputy. Cromwell only became the commander after Charles I's execution in 1649 when Fairfax refused to invade Scotland in 1650 and resigned. Cromwell was a successful cavalry general during the 1640s but he wasn't the paramount military or polical figure that we tend to think until the 1650s.
