As someone who backpacks; and whose backpack, tent and sleeping bag are each under 2lbs a tripod that weighs 2+ pounds would never make it to my gear (camera gear has to be light as well of course). Even their small Octopus at just less than 1lb only usually on short trips. That said, for short hikes or car travel this looks like a great tool. You’ve highlighted to me how great a lot of Ulanzi’s gear is though, and often great value!

The only major downside I can see for this tripod over the PD is the customer support. Peak Design's warranty and customer support are world-class, and I've heard stories of just how easy it is for people to get replacement parts and products when something breaks. Scanning through Ulanzi's website, I see nothing regarding warranty or customer service (apart from an email address). That's not to say they don't offer good customer service, but it's something to think about if you're trusting this device to hold up your $2k+ camera setup.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis2 жыл бұрын
I agree peak design customer service is awesome. and the tripod guaranteed for life is something that makes me understand the price
@vizualjockey44192 жыл бұрын
Can confirm. I happen to live in San Francisco where they have a store. I had a small piece rip on my V1 everyday backpack. I brought it to the store and they replaced it with the V2 with no questions asked! Customer service is built into the price which as a professional is worth the extra cost because it turns into a one time purchase. That said, this Ulanzi tripod does make some compelling improvements. I see Peak making a V2 to address some of these improvements.
@thomza2 жыл бұрын
PD warranty has nothing to do with holding up 2k+ camera gear. If the PD fails, they won't replace your lens or camera. And on the flip side, if the Ulanzi fails and isn't covered by warranty, then you can buy a new one and the 2 Ulanzis are still cheaper than one PD. Personally, I don't want to keep gear for over 5 or 10 years because with innovation and better products showing up all the time, the gear you bought a decade ago can be obsolete later on.
@DheeraVenkatraman2 жыл бұрын
You can also buy 2 copies of this tripod for the price of the PD, so you might not actually need customer support

Just got this tripod. I really like it, but I want to clarify something. It's not actually 2.2 pounds. It's 2.42 pounds. An additional 3+ ounces may not make much of a difference to you, and I don't regret my purchase. But it's closer to the PD's 2.8lbs than I initially thought.
@regulation_d2 жыл бұрын
@UCV_Y7XgnjahESbnRe078Ybg I do not, but on the Ulanzi website I do see representations of both 1KG (2.2 lbs) and then in the specifications section 1.1KG, which equates to 2.43 lbs, which is what my scale is reading. PD represents that the carbon fiber tripod weighs 2.81 lbs, which I'm tempted to believe because of the additional specificity. Again, I'm not upset with my purchase, but for those of us who are taking this thing backpacking and are counting all of our ounces, it's just important to know what the actual weight is. My scale isn't calibrated, but I've weighed a lot of stuff (cooking equipment, sleeping pads, etc.) with it, and it's typically very close to the manufacture's advertised specifications.

This tripod looks good and I love the light weight, but adjusting the head seems less advantageous because the lever seems to be either tight or loose, without anything in between. That means that, with one hand on the camera and one on the lever, it can be hard to adjust the aiming of the camera. If the head control had spectrum of looseness, (alowing for slightly tight) would prevent the camera from "getting away from you" during adjustment. And needing a tool and head manipulation to shorten a center column seem over design. A simple longitudinal (or transverse) screw inside the point of split would have been adequate, but that is a lesser point.
@jamiescott55972 жыл бұрын
Regarding panoramas I have the peak design and before I snap it on I loosen the screw that connects the arca plate to my camera which gives me a flat rotation when the tripod is secure This tripod looks great though definitely a serious competitor !

This tripod looks really interesting, but reviewing it without comparing stability to the PD one or some similar tripod makes it hard to judge the quality.

yes - it would be great to have the PD to compare it, but unfortunately don’t have one yet. Hopefully soon 👍. I will say that I find the Ulanzi very stable for my needs.

I really wanted to like this tripod but had to return the one I received. I've had several carbon fiber tripods and none show a seam (appear as a line from the top to the bottom) on the tubes. The carbon fiber tube appears to be made from a sheet formed into a tube instead of a seamless continues weave. I could be wrong but a carbon fiber tube made that way will be structurally weak and something I won't trust with thousands of dollars worth of equipment. The seller from China informed me that the version I have is the latest (came with a non reversible allen wrench and had a rubber O ring by the hook). The quality of the tripod is not even as good as my least expensive Sirui ST125 tripod. It took I while but the Ulanzi store did give me a refund. BTW someone mentioned that the tripod is waterproof but if I remember right the manual said not to submerge the legs in water.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis2 жыл бұрын
The ST125 is great - and I’m no machinist, but I certainly love the quality of this Ulanzi. I can’t speak to how long it will last as I’ve only had it 2 months - but so far it is rugged, I have had it in water, and it has been extremely sturdy with no vibrations. Of course, you have to go with what makes you comfortable and if it didn’t feel right to you, then you did the right thing. Personally, I have a bunch of tripods and this one is by far my favourite. After a couple of years we will see if it stays that way 🤣

@RandumbTech2 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing it violates about a dozen peak design patents - there is no way this doesn’t end up in the courts. Love love love my PD carbon (with acratech head).
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis2 жыл бұрын
the peak design is great and guaranteed for life - which is a huge selling point. I think it’s worth it because you only have to buy one tripod ever. This Ulanzi is more for the budget conscious. There are a lot of travel tripods out right now with many variations that are similar to this one - K&F, Siriu, Lefoto and more. I don’t doubt they all used peak design as a template, but everything is different in this tripod. Different ballhead, legs, payload, feet, locking mechanisms, height, weight, diameter - basically the only thing that could be argued as very similar is the triangle centre column. I have asked Peak Design to send a loaner unit so that I can really compare.
@christophmuller35112 жыл бұрын
I don’t think so. It’s traditional lags instead of the fancy PD ones which is their main selling point. The head is an inverted ball head as well, but that’s nothing invented by PD, Novoflex does that kind of a head for much longer. And then there is the whimpy thin triangular center column which is not really an innovation.
@TheDeltaMoo2 жыл бұрын
They've taken all the r&d from peak design but I imagine they've gone through the patents to try and find ways of going past them.

I guess mimicry is the highest form of flattery, because they even copied the colors and design language. 😂 I'm lucky enough to have the original but I am glad that affordable options in this form factor are coming out. As a disabled filmmaker, the $600 was a no brainer to have a tripod that I could carry and set up myself. Especially because I don't often use a fluid head. I'm using the tripod for interviews and shooting handheld otherwise.

@thomza2 жыл бұрын
@@christophmuller3511 you are incorrect. There have been multiple tripods that have exposed carbon fiber since the early 2000's. The carbon fiber train rolled in well before PD. There were tripods, hiking poles etc already doing it.
@christophmuller35112 жыл бұрын
@@thomza This was a sarcastic comment to point out that the black exposed cf design language wasn’t invented by PD. In fact, my trusty befree carbon is older than the PD - and I would not want to exchange the two as it is much more practical achieving the same height with fewer segments. PD has really good products like the capture clips and others where they spent way to much on design than function, like the tripod or their backpacks without a proper hip belt and back ventilation.

What I truly appreciate about this video is, the multiple times the Sony A7IV missed or hunted for focus. This video is not the only example of this, just the most recent I have come across. Zero regrets staying with the GH5II, and if I ever decide on a FF camera, the Lumix S5 or it’s successor comes to mind. Honestly, the Lumix G9 or its successor is more likely since the gains are minimal and the transition too cumbersome. However, the tripod definitely seems like a winner for sure… ..

The reason the autofocus didn't switch because it was on eye detect, so you have to cover up your face. You can choose other autofocus modes if you just want it to latch on to the product in front of you - I just chose eye detect and went the cover your face route. I love my GH5 and you should never regret buying a Panasonic - they are amazing.

As bullshit as the original. These tripods are not good. They are actually bulky, heavy and flex a lot. If you want to go light, you should rather go for a Leofoto LS224 : light, very strong (no flex) and QD system for a strap (it comes with a good bag but a strap is even better).
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis2 жыл бұрын
Have you tried the Ulanzi? It’s sturdy with no flex unless you go over the weigh limit. But I will see if I can get the Lefoto in for comparison. It’s definitely not heavy or bulky. 1kg and 70mm diameter
@jc.baptiste2 жыл бұрын
@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis I have to confess that I only had the PD in my hands, so I am extrapolating as it’s very similar (not to say it’s a Chinese copy). Despite being lightweight too, I was really shocked how the carbon PD felt bulky and heavy. I have been very peaky with weight, looking for all solutions in the market. I kept for a while the lightest Sirui and it was Ok, but did not absorb vibration very well (the PD too by the way). The Leofoto is not the lightest possible tripod, but yet I have a 1 kg solution all together. It is the best compromise I found between stability, weight, height and diameter. It’s fast to deploy and sturdy as it does not have a center column (you can add one if you really will though). It has plenty of accessories thanks to the huge Leofoto ecosystem, so it feels very serious and like you can keep, tweak it as will and you can easily migrate to another model without changing anything. It has also damned good plates for it, for all tastes and with all sorts of locks. I will never look back : PD/Sirui tripods look like gadgets compared to it. RRS and others probably make very good stuff as well, but far overpriced and, often, too heavy.

Peak Design have amazing customer service and a lifetime guarantee makes the price easier to digest. This Ulanzi is more for the budget conscious - it is different from the Peak Design - but Peak Design's innovations have led to changes in the tripod world and most travel tripods are heading in this design direction.

How is this a knock-off? The legs and head are totally different. The only thing copied is the bag. The PD tripod is rubbish anyway, with bad stability (the lowest section shakes like a Chihuahua), awful ball-head (you have to lift it to rotate it and even then, you cannot just put it into vertical orientation fast).
