This is a top class video Mark. A DVD and/or an mp4 file of this should be included with every XV-01 kit. Good instructive commentary by yourself and superb in focus close ups by Rob. I have saved every step of this build because it was in February that I tore one of my XV-01 chassis down to repair and refurbish. It is still sat in pieces in various containers in a box because of one thing and another. Because I have a poor memory this series of videos will be invaluable, along with the manual. I didn't take apart the gearboxes, but need to so I can check and replace the oil. This particular video will help me do that. I will play it in reverse when I disassemble them lol. Thanks very much to you and Rob for all of your sterling work my friends : ) Massive Thumbs up !

I love these build videos. They are real handy for beginners, so that they can see how simple or tricky assembly is. Especially so they don't make mistakes like forgetting to file or sand off the lugs from the snap off parts. 🚙 Even a builder like myself that has built over a dozen Tamiya cars over the years still finds them enjoyable. 💯 Please keep em coming. 👍

I love the XV01. The handling of the car is awesome! Over the time, I identified some weaknesses. So I replaced the bevel gears of the diffs with the ones of steel. CVDs are a mandatory, especially in the front. When using a strong motor, slipper clutch should be installed.

Thanks for these videos, it helped me a lot. I’ve been in this hobby 30 plus years and frankly this XV-01 build was absolutely miserable. Parts in various bags for each step, it was worse than a 5000 piece jigsaw puzzle. The turnbuckles were torture. The decals on the body horrible (fenders). The lexan body also flimsy. Anyways, I’m in Canada and I emailed the Tamiya rep explaining all the issues. I’m not sure if you have built anything Traxxas recently but they have really stepped up their game. Coloured detailed instructions, parts fit wonderfully. I personally feel Tamiya needs to update how their kits are made. I couldn’t believe for almost $400 Canadian dollars that this XV-01 had mainly Phillips screws. Those types of screws are in toys not hobby grade RC vehicles.

Hi Serge, thanks for the interesting comment. Glad the videos were of some help. I have been building Tamiyas for 30+ years and agree, they are very quirky, you definitely need to be a big fan to enjoy building them. "Torture" is the exact term I would use for the turnbuckles, I ended up cutting threads into the ball ends! And the stickers are a pain, definitely easier if you heat them up with a hairdryer first. I haven't built a Traxxas, but the kits do look good. I agree that hex head screws should be standard these days, I've started to replace the stock screws with them on my newer builds. Maybe Tamiya will update their kits if they keep losing market share? Who knows! Thanks again and all the best from Mark...

I always consider Traxxas back in the day as what English people say “rubbish” but the TRX-4 is amazing. Full colour instructions, and parts in bags that make sense. The parts fit together so precision like too. I know Traxxas don’t offer many kits but they sure nailed it with the TRZ-4 Sport I built. Please consider one to compare.

Cheers Steve - yeah there are lots of cool features on this one - I was surprised to find that the chassis, wheel hubs and suspension towers are all carbon-reinforced plastic - very stiff !!! The whole chassis is much more rigid than my other Tamiyas, and there is very little play in all the moving parts - it's a tight little kit! ;-)

Very interesting, Mark! Finally found a full 20 minutes where I was able to watch the first part ;-) Now that you asked for it, I think I would say I prefer builds cut up in 5-12 minute parts. Easier to find time for. Enough said, I enjoyed the vid! Found the first part with the diff very interesting, since I so far only have come across normal greased down gear diffs and ball diffs. Heard a lot about these sealed diffs with diff oil from racers, but actually never seen one being assembled step by step. Makes me wanna buy this kit just to get to build those diffs myself :-)

Many thanks for the great comment and feedback, Mikael. So glad you found time to watch it! Cheers for the video length advice - luckily the next one is only 13 minutes! I found it difficult to break up the build videos logically, so went with the "parts bag" idea - each of the series uses all the parts from bags A, B, C, D and E. The final video shows the completion of the body. I was thinking like you, too, that about 10 minutes was about right for each one - but I went into too much detail!!! Anyway, they are all done now, and thankfully some are a lot shorter. Yes, the oil-filled diffs are new to me too, they feel really nice and smooth when done, with much more resistance when turning only one output shaft, compared to the normal diff type. I appreciate your time, both watching and commenting. :-)

Ooh that does look like a lovely kit. You've done a great job of keeping the commentary relevant to what you are doing with helpful advice. It's a difficult balance between a time lapse build and waffling on and on and I reckon you've got it spot on. I notice that you don't use threadlock on the pinion and I think we have talked about this before and I can't believe that you haven't had one come loose. Also the no grease thing between the pinion and the spur was the same on my Traxxas Slash and it didn't seem to cause a problem. I can't imagine that a little grease would be a problem either. Anyway I look forward to seeing the next installment of this build mate. Rob must be very patient holding the camera while you get the fun of the build 😀

Thanks a bunch, Ian! Yes, the plastics in this kit are a real step-up from the entry level kits, I think they are reinforced with carbon fibre, definitely very strong! The chassis is very robust, after many, many runs, I have no breakages at all. Happy New Year! :O)

Hi - I haven't felt the need to install any hop-up parts to my XV01, it runs very well in stock form and is very robust, I can report no broken parts at all in 3 years of running it! :)

I just got my XV 01, im on the first steps of building it. And I must say its hard work compared to my Terra Scorcher I build before. My question is, dont you use taps/thread fomers on the gear boxes holes ? I think its recomendet on page 3 or 4 of build manual. But cause i dont had one i asked me if I could just screw them in without thread. nice work with that build project btw good informations when build on my own.

Hi - yes the XV01 is quite a difficult build! But, no, I did not use a tap for the threads - just put a bit of grease on the screw before fitting, it will help the screw go in.

The plastic gears in the diff are the hop up parts for these Tamiya 54428 Steel Bevel Gears for TA06 Gear Differential Unit (XV-01/FF03R/M07) Just asking as I got this hop up part in spares box wondering if I could use them for this build ?

Hi Adam - yes the 54428 steel gears are listed as compatible with the XV-01, so you should be good to go with them. You will soon know when you compare them to the kit plastic gears, they should be exactly the same size - good luck! :)

Very nice Mark!! 👏👏👏👏🍻🍺 I'm liking the way this kit is going together so far. I'm a little concerned about the choice Tamiya made with Diff Oil... But that is Tuneable. I'd drive it first, but would likely end up with 5000wt up front, and 8000-10,000wt in the rear. Maybe I'm too used to Crawlers, where I use up to 500,000wt in the Diffs!! 😱 Unless I'm Competition Crawling, I NEVER Lock the Front Diff!! It increases the Turning Circle and causes excessive strain and wear on front Suspension Parts!! 😫💥😣 Anyone who's been a Mechanic of Real Cars fully understands what I'm going on about. 500,000wt still allows some slow Differential Action, for tighter Steering. But it's SO THICK that the Wheels are *nearly* locked. It's like Positraction vs. a Drag Racing Spool... You NEED to have the Front Wheels turning at two different speeds for good control, performance and durability! I've not done this on a far Lighter Rally Car yet.... I'd imagine that you'd want Lighter Oil in the Diffs, but 1000wt just seems more like just a thicker Lubricant than a means of tightening up the Axles. I get an odd feeling that I might end up with at least 3000wt Front and 6000wt Rear. We'll see how yours performs. I DO love the way this is going together!! 👍👍 EVEN by Tamiya's Standards!!! Very impressed with the tight tolerances on the Gear Shafts. This SHOULD end up being your finest performing Vehicle to date! Can't wait to see more. Carmine 💥 ⛽

I totally get what you are saying about the diffs - unfortunately my CC-01 hasn't got sealed units, so all solid unfortunately - and YES the front drivetrain is under a lot of stress! As you say, we will see how it goes with the 1000wt oil, I haven't had a chance to test it properly yet! I do think it will be my best performer to date, and as you can imagine, I'm very excited to find out! Well Mark, when I can get back to working on my 'Freeder, I'll take up that challenge!! 😱 The front Diff on a CC-01 isn't sealed - as we both know.... But I want to try! O-Rings on the output shafts with backing shims (much like your XV-01 Diffs went together) and something to seal the end cover.... I might work! 😎

Hi Jose - I am thinking of fitting a brushless motor to the XV-01 very soon - I am thinking about the Hobbyking Trackstar 17.5 turn sensored motor. I have used them before and they are good quality, very good price, and work well with the standard Tamiya TBLE-02s ESC :)) The motor also comes supplied with the sensor cable.

Hi Paul - You can use any silicone oil for the diffs, I used some 1000wt shock oil I had spare - it's Hobbyking Turnigy Shock oil, the big bottle you see in the video was only £3!!! You can get it in lots of weights, from 300 to 10,000 weight. I have several bottles and am very pleased with it for both shocks and diffs.

Mark Bryan RC is ‘wt’ and ‘cst’ the same measurement?

Paul - weight or wt is completely different to CST (centistroke). CST is the industry standard, weight is a measure used by some companies and is not a standard measure. Basically, the bigger the number, the thicker the oil. But it is difficult to try to compare the two, I think 100wt is about 1200cst but that's a guess! Best to stick with one brand and its easier to compare - basically 1000wt is twice as thick as 500wt.

Hey Paul - I have been thinking about this weight and CST issue again, and think I have been using the terms incorrectly! The bottles of oil that I have, both Tamiya and Turnigy brands, do not state what the measurements are, they just quote numbers. People seem to just use the numbers and refer to them as "weights" But on reflection, I know car engine oil SAE measurement is the weight of the oil. So SAE 40 is pretty thick isn't it? It is probably as thick as my 700 silicon shock oil - so the Tamiya and Turnigy numbers must be CST!!!

Hi David - BG3 is the tiny plastic spacer that looks like a washer? I think it is attached to a little round plastic ring, and not on any other parts tree. I remember it was not in the bag I expected it to be, it may even have been in the shock bag! or the diff bag? Sorry, don't remember exactly, it was a long time ago as I say, it's not where you might think it should be. Hope you find it! All the best. :)

I understand your sentiment, Jerry, but I think that owning a Tamiya is much more rewarding because you have built it yourself. I urge you to try building one and see how you feel about the RC car when it is finished! :-)
