i have a strong grip and struggled with release, tending to hold release off thinking i would pull/hook the ball, ironically this weekend decided to really relax and accept the resulting outcome, PERFECT even a bit of a draw, now visually looking much better as per you vid with superb results

Grip, grip, grip. Everything comes down to your grip. I started lessons with someone after the Covid lockdown here in Thailand in June. First four lessons concentrated on grip and then getting a good hip turn. Then added a little width to my take away. Subsequent lessons were really just check-pointing where I am. Totally transformed my game. & iron has gone from 145 to 175 and I'm hitting heavy or thin way, way less often. Taken 4 shots off the handicap and falling. All from fixing my grip and rebuilding from there.

Great lesson, my instructor is trying to get me to understand this. Lots to think about here. I do think tension plays a lot in the release as well. One thing that is obvious is your ability to aim at a target and pull these different swing paths off was pretty amazing in it’s self.

This was one of the best vids I've seen in all of the years I'm watching the channel, very well explained both verbally and visually. Really nice work Mark, honestly. There's not many videos that so comprehensively take on a diverse range of problems with different golf swing and what it might look like. Shame my pretending-I-can-teach-a bit-of-golf-days are likely over, but I will definitely recommend anyone to watch this when struggling in their swing and recording it for diagnostics.

Not heard the term before, but now having seen the vid... i can see it's one of major things i've been trying to emulate from the pros back in the day. That perfect 3 - 12 - 9 o'clock face through the swing. Love what you're saying the personalization of "match ups"... helping or hurting you.. and it all depending on "what comes before" the release.

Mark, I think that body physiology plays a part in this. I have a long torso with relatively shorter arms, and it causes me to want to release the club so much. I don’t think enough teachers give attention to the physical limitations of their students (flexibility, strength, geometry, coordination limits, etc...)

Just got in from the range. So many "almost" shots, then the odd pure one with the sensation of fluid, easy motion. Just so difficult to get consistency with the "match-ups", as different physiological compensations compete to take centre stage. As such, really good to watch this video Mark. I suspect many of us really appreciate it when you get your serious teaching golf pro hat on. It's when you're at your best and your videos are enthralling.

Thanks for this one, Mark. I hadn't really thought about the whole action of the swing. I gave up the game for 19 years because of children. I have been slicing badly since I started up again. So my club pro at my club asked me to strengthen the grip with the top hand. This would have my thumb round the side of the club, and not on top. but also to have my thumb on the side with the right or lower hand. Last he asked me to change my stance to have my trail foot back a couple of inches to open the stance up. This now all works, and I am getting all of my winter distances back again, and I am hitting everything straight. I am a couple of clubs down on distance from the mid 1980's. I am 64 now. Much happier.

Heard and thought of match-ups for quite some time already. They're a natural way of looking at the variety of functional swings. The (only possibly) way of understanding why DeChambeau and Wolff both play great golf, why Eamon Darcy and Jim Furyk are/were successful despite "unorthodox" looking swings!

I’ve learnt so much from this video, never heard of ‘match up’ before and think I kinda get it now, would love to have a lesson on this to better understand what will work best for me. I’ve had so many lessons from different instructors, frankly most confuse me or if I get the concept my body just can’t achieve it, ie to swing it like Rors or DJ, I am neither! Just love to be able to swing the best I can with what I’ve already got ( 57 yrs of age, off of 5.0 h’cap) oh would just once in my life achieve a h’cap that starts with a 4! Get video Mark keep them coming. Thanks Gary 👍👍

Thanks Mark, makes a lot of sense.... and it’s something I’ve tried to get out of my teachers during lessons when they suggest leaning the handle forward or take a divot or whatever, I always say yes but what’s causing me to not be able to do this in the early part of the swing... cause and effect.

Principles easily understood, but it's going to be difficult for an individual to separate out cause and effect - even with lots of effective video recordings. In the last 8 years (since retirement) I've been working on my swing - grip, address, body rotation, head position, sequences, muscles relaxed/tensed, concentrated/carefree - and it has seemed more like a never ending story of adjusting one thing, then having to adjust something else to compensate. Results have been up and down as developments in the practice area produce new imperfections on the course. So that's the status quo for me and it's why I found this particular clip so interesting. It's the first time I've heard about matchups, or the way the three issues you mentioned interact to modify the resulting release. On the basis of this video I'm going to start from scratch on my swing and use the concepts presented in this clip to see if I can produce a natural - therefore more easily repeated - swing instead of the mechanical bricolage I have created. Bye bye Frankenstein, hello Tarzan. It was also fascinating to see how significant changes in your swing produced so little effect on your ball flight. Thanks for this eye-opener.
