The only coach on you tube I listen to. I found this out by myself one day at the range a few years ago. Out of frustration I put the ball in the back of my stance with loads of shaft lean and for the first time in my life was compressing the ball and was getting the total opposite of what my instructor told me what would happen. I went from hitting a weak 120 with an 8 iron to hitting high 150 yard draws. I taught myself how to play a draw even though when I went to the instructor and showed him he said it's not a natural golf swing and I should be playing low fades with a swing like that. I have slowly moved the shaft lean into the centre stance and the shots have straitened up. But I still play my draw off the back foot when needed. I also got called a cheat by this instructor for using a chipper. I said to him says the man who's got a car that parks it's self. I like the way Mark works with what a golfers got and not what he hasn't. I find most instructors just want you to play their game.

I am a Right handed person trying to learn how to play golf! Nevermind the speedy tech-speak! Really showing off in this one Mark! De-lofting, adding loft, one handed chipping, LEFT handed chipping, hinged LEFT handed, strong gripped, four knuckles showing pulley one! All in the first four and a half minutes of the video! Get it! You are a God! And I am not! Thanks for taking the time to post the video and clarify that for me!

Best explanation of what a strike should be and look like. I’ve only ever seen one other instructor give the visual example of what part of the club face needs to hit the ball. Not only is it the proper way to strike a ball but it increases your margin of error tremendously versus the other method where people are trying to strike it with standard dynamic loft on a 0 degree attack angle

I wish everyone had access to a launch monitor because this was the one thing that changed my game. I had lessons for months to try and fix my weak high fade miss to the right. We worked on position drills and setup and wrists and many of those things made a difference, but soon enough it crept back. And then one day I was on a trackman unit, and a pro walking past looked at my numbers on the screen, and said you strike the ball so cleanly, but I would get that launch down from 28 to 20, and then he left. I was hitting a 7i at the time. So I tried to hit stingers to see how low i could take that number. And from the very first swing the strike felt unbelievable. So deliberate and the controlled and completely changed my game. I've gone from an 18 to a 10 handicap in a couple months. Now if I could only put... lol

Move the ball back slightly in your stance. If you play with a closed face your hands would need to be forward of the ball and hands not releasing as much. This will help me no end. I get good impact on irons and woods but I add about 6 degrees of loft. I love the idea of swinging with a closed face and this is a gold nugget of information. Thank you so much

Thanks Mark, another useful and clear video. The closed face with neutral grip is something Shawn Clements has taught for 15+ years and is a great way to feel the correct delivered loft. He sets up in a way where he gets in almost in more of the delivery position at address followed by his "gather" (backswing), and "release" (deliver all you got towards the target). Well worth a watch and he and Mark are two of my favourite teachers on the old YT.

Went to the range last night and really focused on three knuckles visible on left hand (before it was barely one visible) and at top of back swing having face of club perpendicular to the ground and not the sky. It is ‘ridiculous’ the improvement on the strike I was getting. I’m sure it will take practice to ingrain the changes but it was honestly such a lightbulb moment. So grateful !

Another reason to go see a pro with a quad/trackman… now I understand why I used to do a crazy left side weight lean to get into ground better when I was struggling with strike during a round… was adding loft and getting inconsistent strike apparently. I have corrected the problem for the most part, but would love to get my numbers on a quad to see where it’s at now. Great stuff as usual Mark. The coach for nerds.

You've really encouraged me to re-grip my clubs. I'm 2m tall with large hands. Standard grips have always felt very insubstantial in my hands, but I've never had a club fitting where grip size was experimented with - or even considered. It's always, "Oh, you're tall so you're going to need longer clubs." I think my ball striking would really improve if the club felt more secure in the hands.

What is the direction of causation of Handicap(+/-) Swing Speed(+/-)? Most people would say Lower Handicap -> Higher Swing Speed (because you're better you can swing faster). I would argue it's the opposite Higher Swing Speed -> Lower Handicap. What allows higher swing speeds -> stronger club face control (you don't have to slow your swing to 'control' your slice). Cheat Code: Play with Toe-Down, Shut/Stronger Face control -> Lower your Handicap

Great video, Mark. I really struggle to achieve loft with all my clubs. They’re always well done on the club’s static loft. I think I’m delivering the club well enough but think it’s because I have a tendency to hit fats.
@stephencostello52962 жыл бұрын
I have realised I have been struggling with adding loft (thinning shots on a regular basis), I have tried to counter this by aiming to bottom the club just in front of the ball by focusing on the grass just in front of the ball. But will now have a go at trying to use your ideas.

I've struggled with the "flip" shot for years. I can do the drills but it always came back with a full swing. I started to focus more on my body turn, but what seemed to make the biggest difference was using ulnar divination to firm up my lead wrist and reduce the cupping. Feels weird but seems to work for me.
@marcusjohnson4882 жыл бұрын
At last, someone has gone into the relationship between static loft and delivered loft. I can now understand why decreasing loft brings the ball up from the bottom grooves to the middle of the face. So if you’re going to hit it on the sweet spot, you have to lean the shaft forward. This is quite a tough concept to get and I still wonder why golf clubs have been designed like this? What’s the history behind it? I’ve never seen this aspect of clubmaking discussed and would love to know more. Fantastic stuff, Mark and this could help me work through issues with flipping/ adding loft at impact 👍😊
@ianblackburn59352 жыл бұрын
Great that you’re able to manipulate various aspects in your swing at address and during to help explain concepts. I have a tendency to early extend, which means I have high handle at impact when I do, results in pushes. When I focus on turning (left hip back to rotate) I get the proper forward shaft lean and strike the ball much better. My danger being I have to try and not manipulate grip/shaft lean too much, as if I do that and I get the rotation right, I get draw/hooks I’m not used to (or can do). Tweaking in the course is hard 😂
@dougellio70002 жыл бұрын
Would you use the grip to control the club face in the back swing or encourage a particular arm/hand movement to do it?
@charlesmarshall80462 жыл бұрын
Weirdly, this is exactly what I have been trying to implement. I didn’t add loft but I didn’t take any off either, and on bad days I’d hit fat and thin shots. Working on taking loft off has largely eliminated those and given me a more piercing trajectory. It has also added a significant amount of carry distance - about 7 yards to my 8 iron, for example.
@simonmcallister91962 жыл бұрын
That's a first! Not really seen a vid about this! I tend to take the ball too cleanly without the wishful after divit! I hit very high but lose distance. When you demonstrate where the ball contact will be in differing lofts.....it all makes sense! Even though my natural low point is a ball and a half behind the sternum point I will give this some serious practice! Great vid!

I really struggle with this, I swing at around 94-95 with a 7i and angle of attack is 0, and my 7i goes about 163-165, I notice it with my wedges, people like yourselves with similar swing speeds hit wedges way further than I can, and I've come to the realisation it's because I always end up adding loft. Really need to work on this. Good video mark.
