His comparative observations regarding the social and economic differences between the Philippines and its ASEAN neighbors are most probably taken into consideration by prospective investors, as they decide where to do business. It appears that corruption is eating up part of the profits, which reduces capital accumulation that can be plowed back for expanding growth. The Marxist term for this practice is unproductive consumption. Under normal conditions, there is great potential for more profits in emerging economies. This is statistically an empirical fact and it has a theoretical explanation. However this possibility for greater profits is greatly diminished if corrupt politicians and bureaucrats make careers of extracting tithes from business profits. Very informative interview. Thanks.
