There is also the status of forces agreements which for one thing mandates that the base employ a certain amount of locals on the base. When trump was president the first time he wanted to close the bases we have in the eastern European countries. But those countries wanted the bases to stay bc they help protect them from foreign incursion, i.e. Russia. So having bases in a foreign country is not the same as owning ports in a foreign country.

It's a tariff, not a sanction. They are not a threat to international peace. We wouldn't be punishing them, either-- if the U.S. wants to use the canal, we'll have to pay whatever price. There's a reason they can charge the U.S. 10x as much. The only way I see this feasibly working out for the U.S. is if we make our trade partners shoulder the burden, but that won't bode well for us... especially if he *really* wants to impose those tariffs. They'll be better off just not trading with us at all, and I'm certain that will go swimmingly for us as well.

@nesquik9579 contracts are contracts. Us and panama signed the contract that they would build it together, and Usa would handle back the canal to Panama. Canal was handled back to Panama. Panama now owns the canal and has the right to do whatever they want.End of discussion. USA benefited from that canal for a long time. There is no debate here.
