Trump, Panama Leader Clash Over Canal Control

Panama's President José Raúl Mulino has rejected Donald Trump's threat to reimpose US control over the Panama Canal, saying sovereignty over the waterway is not negotiable. Trump earlier claimed that the canal is "falling into the wrong hands" and implied that the US could take control of it. Bloomberg's Jill Disis reports.

President Jimmy Carter signed the Torrijos-Carter Treaties with Panama on September 7, 1977, which transferred control of the Panama Canal to Panama by 1999. A BIG MISTAKE by Carter. We paid for the land and the final development costs of the canal. It belonged fully to the USA, not Panama; just like Alaska (bought from Russia for 7 million dollars) belongs fully to the USA. According to YOUR NONSENSE RATIONALE, we should "give Alaska back to Russia" as well !!!

66% of all goods going through the canal are going to or coming from the US. The canal typically earns $2 billion a year, 40% of which goes into the Panamanian treasury and the other 60% going to “infrastructure costs” which essentially means China since the majority of the contracts for port infrastructure have been given to China based companies who operate the canal. Panama basically owns the canal in name, but China owns it operationally, they even want to build a Chinese consulate at the canal, which would basically be an unofficial declaration of ownership. But THIS year (2024) the canal has brought in a record breaking $5 billion dollars divided up per usual, 40% to Panamanian treasury, 60% to “infrastructure” 🙄 & this is despite them lessening the amount of vessels allowed to use the canal this year. So how do you more than double earnings while simultaneously lessening how many vessels are allowed to use the canal?!?! Huge increases in fees. And if the US accounts for 66% of traffic at the canal, that means the US… or more accurately you, me and every other American, paid 66% of that $5 billion… while struggling to barely get by… these are things like petroleum imported from Colombia and Venezuela, lumber from Brazil and produce from Brazil, Chile and Argentina… things that raise the price of gas, housing and groceries for us because we’re paying billions extra in canal fees. Since so many people don’t know, when we gave Panama control of the canal, there was a provision in the Neutrality treaty that stated that the canal must remain neutral to all countries and that the U.S. reserved the right to use military force if said neutrality was violated or threatened… Panama agreed to and signed that treaty. Does allowing China to control the canal and potentially influence extreme port fee increases, sound neutral to you? I’m not advocating that we fight, initiating a fight with Panama would mean involving China and likely it’s brics country allies like Russia, but something HAS to be done, we can’t afford to continue paying exorbitant fees like Biden has allowed to happen this year. I’m not sure what that “something” that has to be done is, it’s not for me to say, maybe incentivizing Panama, maybe threatening to find contracts for goods elsewhere and taking our 66% of traffic that they earn with us, but something needs to change.

The Neutrality Treaty, also known as the Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal...1977. Panama has help to the agreement to the letter. The Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty of 1903 was essentially a 99-year land lease. The USA never actually owned the canal or the Canal Zone. OK....but you ask what is taking place to get Trump to do what he's doing? Aside from a grievance he has with the Panamanian govt. because was booted out of his casino high rise that was laundering money for Russians you mean? Well this story broke on Christmas eve. It’s one-thing to have ships delayed due to technical and/or environmental reasons, but another to have ships ‘backed up in the bay’ waiting for weeks to transit the canal while encouraging the shipping companies to pay seven-figure bribes/fees to allow specific vessels to cut the line ahead of others. Like it or not, this is one of the reasons/causes for continued inflation in relation to the products imported/exported through the Panama canal.

There is also the status of forces agreements which for one thing mandates that the base employ a certain amount of locals on the base. When trump was president the first time he wanted to close the bases we have in the eastern European countries. But those countries wanted the bases to stay bc they help protect them from foreign incursion, i.e. Russia. So having bases in a foreign country is not the same as owning ports in a foreign country.

It's a tariff, not a sanction. They are not a threat to international peace. We wouldn't be punishing them, either-- if the U.S. wants to use the canal, we'll have to pay whatever price. There's a reason they can charge the U.S. 10x as much.
