I'd learned that this was written by William Connelan and upon hearing this Carolan exclaimed" that's so beautiful I"m surprised it wasn't written by me"
@MarkHarmer2 жыл бұрын
I think that’s right - I’ve always heard it said that it’s the one piece Carolan wishes he had written.

Thank you! Actually I was also partially deaf when I played this - I had an operation eventually to replace the bones in my ear. But the harp is great because you sort of surround it, and the vibrations are wonderful. When you put the harp on a suspended wood floor, you can feel the music vibrating through your feet.

Agnieszka B I love how you say the Realms' borders don't exist when listening to this. I absolutely feel the borders between past, present and future melt away. I think Carolan wrote in the 16th or 17th century and his music transcends time.

O'Carolan still going strong. He lived at my ancestors place, Charles O 'Connor, in Belanagare castle for a long time, O'Connor Roe, near Roscommon. I played these tunes as a school child 50 years ago in the school band, heard them still played recently by the same school band on a visit home. Not much known outside the area. Strange to see a million views on the web. Three hundred years ago. Even though the castle is a ruin, some things still survive that were in use then and now as heirlooms. Quality is timeless and never dies. Being handicapped is not always a disability.

My 3 year old son found an Irish coin with a harp on it. I wanted to show him what a Irish harp was and this was the first thing that came up - from someone I know just 30 miles from where we live. i was even able to tell him that you had played your harp in the baby unit where he was born! Thanks Mark, beautiful!

Thank you Jennifer. If it's any consolation, Carolan himself suffered from Smallpox and its attendant blindness, and more self-inflicted, through drink. Still I think it's amazing to have this legacy of music to make us feel so elevated.

You touched a nerve, as it were, amongst those of us who have experienced chronic pain. As a player, I have often had the experience of playing music (and listening too) and suddenly realising that my mind was taken off the pain in a dramatic way. Endorphins love a good tune too I suppose! Thank you for writing to us all.

That’s really nice of you to say - thank you so much! Honestly, though, you could start at any point. I have had people start in their 60s and 70s and be very successful. In fact, in some way, the later you leave it, the more you are likely to learn for the right reasons - because it’s something you want to do. Anyway I hope that encourages you.

@@MarkHarmer thank you. I actually learnt guitar but I couldn't get harp lessons even though I had a small celtic harp. This was years ago. I was told I needed to play piano before one school waould consider taking me on. I should probably stick to one instrument to be reasonably good at this point in my life. I'm prone to spreading myself too thinly but I appreciate the advice. And I get inspired by you.

such a beautiful arrangement. I love the first repeat (roughly 1:20 to 2:30) where the melody goes into the lower register. The accompaniment is high up and barely perceptible; sometimes it sounds like an echo of the melody offset from the main melody, sometimes a harmony. It's just brilliant. the whole thing.
