Just a heads up, the 135MM 3.5 version I have is actually a 5 element in 4 groups, not 4 element in 4 groups. The A and M vs (Auto and Manual) spelled out being the indicator. Always assumed it was the 4 element one so apologizes for the incorrect info. Shouldn’t impact the images all that much as seen comparing it to the 135mm f2.5 (5 element).

The first versions of this lens had 5 elements. Later versions have 4. There are 2 pages for information about this lens/these lenses on pentaxforums: www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/Takumar-Auto-Takumar-135mm-F3.5.html and www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/S-M-C-Super-Takumar-135mm-F3.5.html . I have three of these, the first silver and black version, perhaps the prettiest lens in my collection, the all black preset 5 element version, and an SMC version. The minimum focus distance on the silver and black lens is 200 cm, a little less than 7 feet, while my black preset and the SMC version focus down to 150cm, 5 feet. I don't shoot with 135mm focal length, so these lenses are just for my collection. The black preset I suspect has the best IQ of the three. Earlier versions of the lens have eight aperture blades, later versions have six.

I have a near perfect copy of the 135mm f/3.5 but I much prefer the Super-Takumar 105mm f/2.8 on a 1.5/1.6x crop sensor. On a 35mm Spotmatic however it is a very nice focal length. This finally being spring I've had a great deal of fun with the Tele-takumar 200mm f/5.6 preset lens both on its own and with extension tubes. With 10 blades it provides nice round bokeh and that buttery smooth background blur when taking shots of flower blooms.

Love your video format. Informative and entertaining. Since I got into vintage lenses, every time I acquire a new one, I like to spend quality time cleaning them with care on the outside to make them look (almost) new. It feels good to reuse something that has been around for decades and can still give. I'd love to clean and put this on my EF mount so don't clean it too much! Thanks!

Dude new comer to your channel and I have to say the quality of your content is off the charts good! I recently just got into vintage lenses with my first arriving tomorrow actually (Pentacon 50mm 1.8). I’ve been a long time Sony user for the longest time but I actually just added a 2nd body Fuji XT4 to my lineup that I’m using for all my vintage glass. Looking forward to watching more of your content. Also Canadians are amazing. I know because I married one.

Wow!! Welcome my friend! Please tell me how you like the XT4, I’m a little obsessed with it now lol. That Pentacon is loads of fun mate! Min focusing distance! Enjoy that!

Mark Holtze Compared to my Sony A7RIV it’s a lot more fun to use and holy smokes is that shutter on the XT4 pleasing to my ears! Sooo quiet! And with built in IBIS now being able to get tack sharp shots at 1/4 second? Get outa here XT3 😆 I’ve got a steady hand and I was still getting blurry shots at 1/20 sec with the XT3. So question Mark...I’m a huge fan of soap bubble bokeh and the dreamy bokeh the vintage lenses have to offer. If price isn’t an issue (not spoiled I just work really hard) what lens would you recommend to me as a must have? Your review of the Takumar 135mm F2 is about to play next but I would love to hear what you think is the best or what your top recommendation would be for what I’m looking for. Thanks again for the reply!

The 135mm focal length is very underrated. Jack Nicholson has in his contracts that this is the only focal length he will allow to be used to film him in any movie! He loves that focal length. I have several different lenses in 120mm to 135 and these are amazing lenses.

I agree, you need a bit more space when you shoot with it, but it resolves so nicely for portraits. I remember hearing all the focal drama from out cinematographer professor as to who wanted to be shot with what lenses. The key to being photogenic is a lens, camera angle and lighting lol.

When it comes to 135mm I recommend the Schneider Kreuznach Retina Tele Xenar 135mm f4 I am using with the Viltrox Speedbooster on my X-T2. If you don't mind the 4 Meters minimal focussing distance and a price of around 30 € it is worth a try anyway. A very (!) compact,beautiful and very sharp lens with beeeaaauuutiful colours and a background separation that is nearly 3-d- ish. The buildquality I would describe as outstanding. As an amateur I can't say anything bad about that little beauty and after using it for about 9 months now,I mostly prefer it over the Pentacon 135mm f2.8 15 blades,that I only use for closer shots. I can't imagine any reason that this lens is more known, maybe I am the only one that is in love with it ,but that's what I am... The Takumars are on my list ,too and I will give them a try but by now I am trying to reduce my collection of vintage-lenses to these I really use.After my exessive GAS is flattening,I realised so many unused glass on my shelf,that is covered with dust. How did I miss this video? I have several Takumars of various focal lengths. But for the subject matter here, yes I have two 135's. The Super-Takumar 135/2.5 and the SMC Takumar 135/3.5. Both is excellent condition. Especially the 3.5. You know I usually grab the 2.5 when I want that focal length but optically the 3.5 is probably better, with those excellent SMC coatings. Plus like you said it's much lighter. The 2.5 is a real chunk of metal and glass. 17.3 oz for the 2.5, 12.7 oz for the 3.5. Add that to my Pentax K-5II with loaded battery grip and I've got quite a load. But I like the mass of the camera and the grip as I ofter shoot in Portrait orientation. Ever try your Takumar's on one of their native Pentax SLR's or DSLR's?

I always find it quite surprising when I go out to do a dedicated test how I come back and really enjoy the images. There is one thing I miss from the video. I'm super amateur at photography and video making, but when I use normal photo lenses to record video, they tend to change "zoom" slightly while I'm trying to focus. I experienced that with most lenses that I currently own. Does the Takumar also have that?
@MarkHoltze4 жыл бұрын
Focus zoom is a feature most digital cameras have. I always use it when fine tuning my focus. It’s more of a camera function than a lens function. A newer lens might do that automatically if you manual focus it, but these old lenses don’t have any digital contact so there is no communication between the camera and the lens
@kevrosas14 жыл бұрын
If it happens on a manual lens, I think it’s called zoom creep and depends how loose the barrel is. I’ve had some which are really stiff or really loose. A good method is to use a rubber band over the barrel between the join to give it a better grip.
@bombapiotr4 жыл бұрын
@@MarkHoltze That's not what I meant, so let me explain in more detail. I have an old Pentax K3 DLSR with let's say Sigma 17-50 F2.8 lens. When I'm in manual focus mode, with focal length set to 50, I start to record and point at something. Then I move the focus ring and objects I see become bigger or smaller as if I was changing the focal length. The issue is very slight. Does it apply to constant focal length lenses? Specially, the vintage ones?

It's particularly good with micro four thirds sensors, as you basically get a tiny and light, but super sharp 270mm equivalent. This is one of the lenses that started my mild obsession with Takumar glass... ok, "mild" might be the wrong word :-)

My dad had one of these for his Pentax. He let me have his kit in the eighties, when he bought a new camera. I loved that 135!

Im just getting into vintage lenses, and got a helios 44-2 for my nikon. Seems like I might spend some money on a Takumar as well even if I don't win.

I sincerely enjoy using this lens on the X-T4. Great combo.

can i have your XT4??? asking for a friend (JKJKKJK) I would love that to be my shoot from the hip camera. What a great package.

I love this lens! It is the first vintage lens I bought. I got it for the equivalent of $15 USD. It started me down the path of getting vintage lenses (mainly cause they are much cheaper than modern equivalents). The only downside to getting these lenses are the fact that they're manual focus. I'm not too great and focusing very quickly, but at the same time, it gives me more practice of doing things manually. Just realized that this lens is currently attached to my X-T30 haha

Mate, I've been in situation, when I have to do a portrait photo session. The customer told me to lay off, my $2000 lens as soon as they saw, the shots on the camera screen and shoot the rest with TAKUMAR 135MM F/3.5. Extra speed, I don't care. The results are excellent! (Actually, I've used 25 year old strobes in the same session)

please avoid using premiere bro. it sucks that we find out the video and not having been able to watch it

But I like it lol. Means I get to hang out with you guys a bit. Try to give lots of warning, but maybe I’ll give less next time.

Wider aperture more weight. I always go for less weight. I used this lens with extension tubes for watch and jewellery photography using a light tent back in the 1980s with Kodachrome 200. I used it on a Pentax Spotmatic. I used to print the slides on to Cibachrome paper in the darkroom. Those were the high point days of my photography life. Not all vintage lenses are soft wiide open. My Jupiter 8 50mm f2 is sharp as a pin

having over a dozen takumar lenses, i love my 135 3.5. yes a 2.5 would be great, but this one and the 105mm 3.5 are always in my bag as are my 35mm, 28mm, 55 1.8, 50 1.4 200mm and macro 50mm. I could go on and on. I love all my prime Takumar lenses and prefer to shoot with them versus the fancy zoom lenses. Boka and color and contrast are so dreamy. Old school makes my heart beat.

I do have 135mm f3,5 in Olympus OM form and I love it. Thought about getting the Takumar variant, but prices are still a little bit too high in this part of the world...

Question, you seem to gravitate towards the Super Takumar, have you tried Pentax-M SMC glass (k-mount) what your view on it?, I have a few SMC ones now and as understand are newer generation over the Taks, should I try going back in time to the Taks or do you think the Pentax-M SMC are good enough? I have the 50mm 1.4, 135mm f3.5, 75-150mm f4 and the 200mm f4, I'm looking for a wider lens version but wondering if I should look at the Taks or just stick with SMC's

Some of the ones I have are super multi coated, but they’re all M42 mounts. Not sure why but I’m partial to those ones probably as they’re the the “version 1”. I also don’t have a k mount adapter lol. Tough choice to make mate, it’s really up to you. Price and convenience.

Great video mark! currently running the a7iii, grabbed myself a vintage Pnetax A 50mm 1.7 and a Praktica pentacon 28mm 2.8, which both surprised me! I think an 85+mm would be next up.

I'd be VERY interested in getting one of these. I've never owned a vintage lens before. I use the Fuji XT-3 (Hopefully the XH1 soon too). I'd love to see the colours/look this thing renders on my body.

Another great video, Mark. I keep watching this one .... lol. I must say I've become a fan of the 135mm focal length on my Fujifilm X-T2. I've been using an Olympus OM Zuiko 135mm f2.8 and the more I use it, the more I like it!

There are two versions of 135/3.5 SuperTaks - the earlier one with 5 elements in 4 groups and the later one with 4 elements in 4 groups. Sorry to disappoint you, but you happen to have the first one ;) Second version has AUTO/MANUAL markings for the switch rather than A/M, and there's never a "4" mark on the aperture ring - it's "3.5" and then immediately "5.6" (first version might or might not have this "4" mark).
@MarkHoltze4 жыл бұрын
Yes, someone has mentioned that lol. Thanks mate. Was told it was the 4 so I was looking for the 4 assuming it was. Regardless the results between the two based on the 2.5 vs 3.5 shouldn’t impact the images enough to make a huge deal. Thanks Alex!
@alexadrianov83574 жыл бұрын
@@MarkHoltze I happened to have the second version for some time, sold it with no regrets - it is utterly boring. Earlier one seems to have a tad more character.

Nice!!! I own a 50mm f1.4 super takumar and I also have 35mm 2.8 minolta. I don’t have a 135 yet. I use a sony a6300. I hope I win this one. I could use it for portraits. Thanks for doing this giveaway even if I don’t win it. Good luck to all! ❤️
