This panel session was recorded on November 4, 2022 at the virtual 2022 New Jersey History Conference, Freedom Seeker, Colonizer and Enslaved: Immigration and Migration in New Jersey.
New Jersey, with one of the most diverse populations in the country, has long been the site of the movement of people-whether they moved voluntarily out of need or want, were forced or coerced to move, or found borders moving around them.
The 2022 annual conference comes during an eventful year that witnessed legislation enacted that established the state’s Black Heritage Trail and made New Jersey the second state to make Asian American Studies a standard part of its K-12 curriculum.
Marking the Land: 18th and 19th Century Strategies for Creating Community was Dr. Chris Matthews. The panelists Included Kyle Brinster, Patricia Chappine and Joella Clamen.
The New Jersey History Conference is a project of the New Jersey Historical Commission. Although overseen by the conference planning committee, views expressed in all recorded sessions are those of the speakers, and they are responsible for the accuracy of their scholarship.
