what happens if they charge u to get your BTC off the HD wallets and onto an exchange to trade , sell and or any other transaction even a loan against it like at a rate that is high say oh u want to use your private coins to buy something it cost 3 btc to use your 5 btc to make that happen , i ask because like with anything there is always a cost of doing business evem with btc we have to have a reason to have it and use it at some point. btw i still think having cold storage is best practice , i just like to play thought experiments

I follow everything you said except for one thing, the only thing that gives Bitcoin value is trust/faith. The blockchain decentralized ledger can be trusted but how do we know that trust in the value of a string of digits will be durable? At least commodities have physical value independent of faith/belief (meme). And while the supply of Bitcoin is limited, there can always be someone who will derive a new crypto coin so in fact there is no limit to the quantity of crypto. It's limited only by imagination.

@@MinimalistCapitalist I agree that belief in the value of gold beyond its commercial uses is somewhat arbitrary but its been durable due to its scarcity. The narrative that crypto is limited and therefore valuable, misses that people can create new types of crypto so these digital tokens are in fact limited by imagination, not physical limitations. So just like fiat currency, these tokens are given value by people's belief in them and are therefore vulnerable to changes in that belief. So crypto has value because people believe it does, but how durable that belief/meme will be is unknowable.

I agree with the ideas of Bitcoin and crypto as an easier medium of exchange. I think there should still be a gold backing of both a paper and crypto currency to make it more solid and trustable…we just saw how the internet outage happened overnight and Bitcoin or any other crypto would be useless. We need a combination of paper/digital that’s backed by Gold and other commodities. Bitcoin can’t be fully trusted because it depends on the internet and cyber space to work.

Problem I have is you have to "trust" that bitcoin will not be hacked, that you can afford internet, that someone will not hack your account, that the internet will not be erased by EMP or solar flair, that large stake holders won't manipulate the value to their advantage, and that a money form, not based on a commodity, will have any value if the system "trust" collapses. Gold is gold and it will always have some level of commodity value.

I only have one doubt: what would happen whether I'll have my bitcoins in my physical wallet but nobody will be willing to provide me the services/goods (i.e., internet access, electricity, PC...) to trade with it (as they do not accept Bitcoin as transaction means)? With all other old style/stone age means (gold, rock, cash) I can transact directly without any (intermediate) service (i.e., I can buy food with cash or gold without any CP risk 🙂). Thanks for clarifying my doubt and further opening my mind.

The onramp requires a financial institution to exchange FIAT into BTC. I can see that once you put your BTC wealth on a cold storage wallet, it's easy to take BTC with you anywhere. My question is, how do you use BTC for the goods and services you want and need once you hit your destination where you want to use your purchasing power. How do I buy a farm in Chile with BTC or a condo in Uruguay? How do I buy groceries? I know there has to be a way. Where do we find the way?

@charlesashworth4751 Thanks for responding. I watched Gammon in Argentina. Best = US $100 bills, accepted everywhere. Silver was OK, but not great. Gold worked, but you took a 50% haircut. BTC had to be converted into a USD stable coin, then pesos, and it was a hassle. Gammon said if he had a community network, it may have been easier. All about your network? Build community? I wonder what Argentine small business owners do who have money (not rich), Where do they store their wealth? US bank account? Local Real Estate? Gold? BTC?

While bitcoin might be a good currency alternative as it is limited, but keep in mind you can add infinite number of other blockchain currencies that will dilute bitcoin value. Believe it or not, the govt does NOT have the authority to tell people what currency to use. During the Civil War there were over 100 currencies in use, but along comes the FED in 1913 and thru chicanery established a monopoly over money used & printed in the US by pushing for the income tax along with legal tender laws which forced the people to pay the tax with Fed money, aka the dollar.

I'm in Australia and in order to get an exchange account set up to buy our bitcoin we had to provide all kinds of ID and proof of income etc which I found alarming...Is there a way around this? My bank wouldn't send my money to a bullion dealer for a purchase until I called and told them they aren't my parents and it's my money that I earned. I don't need them triple checking my purchases because I already did that. They said there is a lot of fraud in precious metals. I said I'm well aware of the risk and I've mitigated that risk by doing my OWN due diligence. Mind you I went to the bank and did the transfer and the employee stated it would be an hour before the money transfered. 24 hours later I was tearing bank employees a new one. So 29 hours after the money was sent it was authorized. The bank authorized the money to transfer. Not me.

I can hold physical gold, in fractions of 1/1000 of an ounce in my hand. I can hand it faster to someone in an exchange than Bitcoin transactions. Bitcoin is only portable if two people have a computer with them. I can put gold notes containing 1/1000 of an ounce up to 1 ounce coins in my pocket and carry them around. I'm not knocking Bitcoin. Bitcoin has value because people believe in Bitcoin. It makes it a great speculation. A thing has value only if people think it does, not because it actually has. It's not what I believe that counts, it's what everyone else thinks that counts. So, if people think certain kinds of seashells, or metal, or computer code has value and people are willing to exchange currency for it...then, that's the way it is. But, remember, bitcoin, gold and silver are NOT fiat currency and are NOT any more a medium of exchange than are bartering toilet paper for a cup of sugar. And, like I said, it doesn't matter what the Constitution says about gold and silver coins, or what people think about Bitcoin, they are NOT used as money in the United States and no storekeeper will take them in exchange for goods and services unless they specifically WANT gold, silver or bitcoin. And THAT would be a BARTER situation, not an exchange of currency for goods and services.
