Another great video. I think Scotland has so many historic sites that people just take them for granted.Half the buildings in your average High street would be tourist attractions here in Australia. Up in Ross-shire I used to search for and visit sites on the RCAHMS database which none of the locals I worked with had ever heard of.

The Romans managed to venture far as the Antonnines Wall and the Gask system in Perth shire before being driven back. Berwick was used as a Roman port and a Roman road towards Cappuck near Jethart can be seen near Linton.The area is criss crossed by them. That area o peeblesshire has many Roman things including the terraces at Romano brig .But ye will ken that. Well done again Mark an interesting wee snippet. Perfidious Calledonii.

The main fort at Lyne is still very impressive. There was a later Antonine Fortlet a hundred yards up the field, a big Flavian Fort two hundred yards away on the other side of the Lyne Water at East Happrew. In the space of about fifty years the Romans had to build three permanent forts, so they were either bored, careless with matches or the natives destroyed them. There was also a massive Roman Temporary Camp around Lyne farm half a mile East. It is a fascinating zone.canmore.org.uk/collection/1161683

I lived at lyne Farm for 49 years and was the farmer for 30 ,i have the documents relating to the dig in the late 50s at vthe fort as well as a number of ariel photos of both lyne camps and remember the clear crop marks in the dry 84 year of the tempoary camp round the farm as well as once accidently ploughing up large obviously man made sandstone blocks south of the farm steading which i should have reported but did not ,a farm grant allowed me to employ an archeologist at one point and 60 different sites were identified on lyne farm alone and of course the major bronze age site on both sides of the A72 is probably as important as the Roman camps

Such interesting history. They've recently done a lot of DNA research on Armstrongs. They've discovered that many of them have deep roots with the Picts. Higher than most English. Legend had it that they were related to Siward Strong of Arm. But that might not be the case. One of the only cultures not completely consumed by the Romans. The Picts fascinate me. A native group that survived 100s of years of invasions by the Normans, Romans, and Celts. It's believed that the lowland and border areas were the first Picts to convert to christianity. Curious what your opinion on these findings are? Hope everyone is having a great day.

My youngest sister had a DNA test done on her entire family and wondered how her son came up with DNA from Sardinia when all the family was from the UK. I told her the Roman officers at Hadrian's wall near Ayton, Scotland and Berwick on Tweed, England (where our old family is from) married and "co-mingled" with the locals to make peace.

Did you hear about the Roman temple found at Easter Langlee? I have copies of the Scotsman article at the time. They found marble structures while workers were carrying out building works. Someone went to get an archeologist but the workers just continued and demolished it before they arrived. The article was in the Scotsman in 1965.
@MarkNicol123
@MarkNicol123 7 жыл бұрын
Aye I've heard about it, wouldn't mind seeing a photo of the article though. That was why the Melrose gate site was thoroughly excavated before they built there, and they found more small Roman artefacts. Its reckoned this was the start of the road from Trimontium over to Lanarkshire.

There were Northern and Southern Picks. Southern picks defended against the Romans hence they built Hadrian's wall. The Romans abandoned the rest of now England and the Southern Picks then settled in the Borders. Armstrong's, Crozier's, Nixon's have Clan members with Pictish genetic marker. There are other Clans from the Borders that have the same genetic marker. The Picks may have been the indigenous peoples of Scotland-England. A skeleton of a Pick has been found dated to around 850 BC through DNA. This is correct as I remember it from many different sources.

We camped at Haltwhistle and walked about 10miles of Hadrian wall recently. It was amazing esp seeing the site of the quarry where many of the stones were cut. Such a shame that Roman sites have not been excavated this side of the border, where did all the stones go at Trimontium? Wonder if they are buried in the field or if they have been removed elsewhere? Great video, have you changed jobs? Not seen you in the store for ages?

Cheers Mark. Does this church sit on the main road just beyond the turn off for Stobo ? I had no idea there was a Roman fort there but it would be what I would expect . The catrail was identified as Hadrians Wall by an Arthur Whitmore in Insullae Britannicum Mark. I was sent all of Comyns Beaumonts books in pdf form so I have been double checking what I can from Roman records . Very intetrsting btw. The cat - relates to the tribe of Gad . He claims Kinneil on the Antonine Wall is Pont Aelli listed in the digitanum something ? Its meant to be the 2nd station on the wall from the tyne on hadrians wall. Kinn- means head of the wall - eil(a) could relate to Aeila ? Kinneil is the 2nd station east on Antonine Wall. Has catrail ran down from Kinneil ? Fascinating.
@greenmagoos
@greenmagoos 7 жыл бұрын
The catrail ran down from Leith according to Whitmore. Comyns beaumont thinks its Kinn-eila and or Leith I think.
@MarkNicol123
@MarkNicol123 7 жыл бұрын
Yes the church is just off the main road a bit past Stobo turn off. Quite interesting place apart from the Roman camp. There are 3 children's crypts that have been excavated from the Iron Age overlooking the camp. Also the church grave yard contains a rare example of an "Adam & Eve" gravestone. The Catrail is mystery piled upon mystery, the Hadrian's wall theory is interesting and plausible.
@greenmagoos
@greenmagoos 7 жыл бұрын
The Church is a place I would have turned off at eventually. It always catches my eye going into Peebles. Looks fascinating place with everything there. Seen Adam and Eve gravestones in Torphichen. Building a vallum ditch to the south of the military way on Hadrians Wall makes no sense to me going by what I've seen on rhe Antonine Wall. Thats been a defence or ditch thats been built upon or altered later I think Mark
