Lidar would be better, you get a point cloud from that, but a basic radar would be way cheaper and stiff stop this, basic raydar basically gives you a distance to an obstacle, with a "strength of return" which is enough for a lot of basic safety. Most modern non-tesla cars have a raydar these days for driving assist / lane follow

Lidar is lazers bouncing to an object and back to the lens to compute distances. It’s how modern day construction happens. We’re able to use drones that produce billions of points mixed with photogrammetry to get a cohesive image with distances and elevations

Stereo or multi camera computer vision still generates a point cloud with multi view geometry and epipolar geometry. Hence how using a camera can still generate a point cloud for photogrammetry. The difference is actually how the different sensors perceive distance, with lidar being time of flight based.
