Across the Moana the art of tatau is legendary - but the marks for women contain stories and meanings that are often little known, especially for new generations. These age old symbols of the Moko Kauae, the Fijian Veiqia, the Papuan Tep Tok and the Samoan Malu were made to celebrate the significance of the female role, but many were also created by female tatau artists.
'Marks of Mana' explores the female history of tatau in our cultures, and the meaning behind these patterns linked like a necklace around the Moana. Part One tells one family's story of the intergenerational malu, as told by the daughters of high chief Va'asilitfiti Moelagi Jackson who sadly passed away after this documentary was filmed.

I don't cry that easily. but when I saw the daughter dancing, With her Malu freshly done, and her mother cheering, showing that huge smile and the proudness she displayed while dancing. It got me crying for a good 5 minutes!! What a beautiful culture!! Thank you for giving me peace.

@@teasatele7799 just because you cant speak samoan doesn't mean you shouldn't get it. If you are a "Samoan" and you are ready then nothing should stop you. Noone has the right to say who can get their tatau but their family. When they give the blessing to get the tatau. Problem today is we are having people judge men or women getting it, when who are they to say who gets it? Do you understand? The people who dont wear the malu or pe'a are always the ones who judge the ones who do have it. Yes I understand that knowing the culture is just as important obviously. But if you are ready and you have recieved your blessings and you are willing to serve your aiga then the rest shouldn't matter.
@AIRJORDAN833

@@lotuuti1155 I disagree, I believe all samoan males who are willing to serve their aiga with nothing but unconditional hard work and love. Should experience the malofie journey. It is part of our culture it is who we are. Why say something like that. When we should embrace our Pacific women and men on getting their tatau.

As a Tongan, props to them for still keeping the culture strong, especially with all the colonisation crap. I’m proud that Tonga was never colonised, but still sad we couldn’t keep our tattoo traditions as strong as it is in Samoa.

Where in Fiji that they swam from because Eastern Fiji Group is Tongan Ancestors Otu Lau o Tonga They found the oldest tattoo Instrument in the Ancient Fortress Village of Pea in Tongatapu Island 2700 years ago 700 years older than Roman Colosseum to deep to reached! Lol Pea??? Tatau was only for second class Chiefs and Tongan Warriors never for the Supreme Tuitonga! When the Tuitonga returned to Haamoa the Chiefs refused to wear the Taovala and so wearing it for life! Otu Lau Futuna Uvea still wearing the Taovala! 🙏

We do not want to debate what you know is right about Samoan tatau..it's just that the chants is self explanatory in that 2 woman who swam and presented the tatau as gifts is everything that exists in Fiji😅😅..we have the 2 Goddesses we know "Yalewa rua"..we have the tattoo that we're mainly practiced by women and the northern part of Fiji..we will never contradict the poems and songs left by our Fijian ancestors..

Appreciation to the SuluApe' family for helping the revival of traditional filipino tattoos. A lot of the designs are the same or similar. They have found in the history books. The Boxer Codex has a lot of information of pre colonized Philippines, in the spaniards first encounters they were called the Pintados(the painted ones) tatau has a long tradition and history across the pacific and South East Asia. What's sad is the colonizers had a majority of the islanders lose their traditions and history. Some Nations were better and able to keep some of those traditions, but some still lost in time.
