It reminds me of the ancient Dutch Immense exchange halls. Very spectacular, love the painted interior. Surprised only 228 apartments. Excellent idea to create a centre commerce that will be a focal point
It really is the highlight Rotterdam needed. Love it.

Think I`ll take an apartment for at least two weeks in this incredible place - then I`ll eat until I drop !!! Have seen lot of travel shows featuring this market but have never seen inside. 10 out of 10 Dennis -fantastic video.

Went to Rotterdam to catch a three-day freighter trip to Hull and back. Spent the next four days sightseeing there, loved every moment. A highly underrated city for tourism (vs. Amsterdam). And I made damned sure I went to Markthal. Loved it!

An extremely interesting video - and like all of your videos, extremely informative. I would add one point. The Markthal is quite a long walk from Rotterdam CENTRAAL train station, but it is very close to Rotterdam BLAAK main line and metro stations.
@denniscallan5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Roger, I do show that station in the video, and say "This train station has tram, metro and bus lines that will easily bring you here, but you can walk from here to the town center in five minutes." But then later I say, perhaps too optimistically, you could reach the main station "in 15 minutes on foot", but I just checked the distance, 1.7 k, so that would be a very fast walk!

3:47 That park is going to disappear for another high rise so no green spot in an already overbuilt city for people to enjoy, one of the few green areas in the concrete jungle that is the center of Rotterdam. Also sucks for the people who bought an appartment at the Markthal thinking they can enjoy a nice view, they'll be looking at another building instead.
@thijs44605 жыл бұрын
Actually the plans for the highrise next to it are older than the plans for the Markthal and those who bought apartments in the Markthal knew about the development next door. They don't have a right to complain. You can't expect to buy an apartment in a major city and not have anything built next to you. Besides, there's plenty of room for a better green area on the Binnenrotte. The field next to the Markthal is an excellent building location whereas the Binnenrotte is way too big to function as a nice square and thus would serve well as a park-like area.
@denniscallan5 жыл бұрын
That would be a shame. That park seems to be the most popular open green space in the central city, which does not have any other similar open space.

wow I just looked that up and found " With over 2000 shops and stalls on 75,000 m², it claims to be the largest recreational covered market in Europe" seems like the Istanbul bazaar, but no apartments overhead :)
