great video!! I used it to make my mother a birthday gift!! 8:53 is when he starts tying the mat, before that he talks about different line/small stuff and whipping, all great info anyways!

Mark, you clean the loose fibres from natural ropes by drawing the length of the rope through a small fire rather quickly. If you get your speed right, you’ll clean the rope nicely. It’s an old Boy Scout trick I learnt from a gentleman called John Goodwin, who was amazing with ropes. After you clean it you still wax it though, as the wax lubricates and preserves the fibres.

Thank you for sharing. You have a great voice and are easy to follow. I can make one but it's so loose. My problem is trying to tighten up. Do you have a video on tightening up without distortion?

If I make a mat like this, could I just tighten it up to make a bowl? I want to make both for my new home, but I am not very clever, but I have managed to make the mat so far, but I need help with the bowl. Thank you for your help with the video, hope you can help me with the bowl. Leonie

When i dont have thread or torch to fix the ends together i use electric tape (the black tape they have at the marine stores or at Wal-Mart ect.) You'll need to stretch it a bit then put a couple wraps around the ends. Sometimes ill put the black tape along the line as a design and use a dark blue thread and maybe even paracord. But is there a version of this only using a simple 3 braided rope? Just curious or a zipper knot that would look awesome as well

When you make your Carrick knot notice that one end comes out on top this is your working end you use the other end to finish the knot going clockwise when you should have gone anticlockwise by the way you started the knot
