Original melody was composed by Franz Schubert in 1852 for a poem by Walter Scott from his major work 'The Lady of the Lake.' In the German Schubert version, Scott's actual poem was adapted in the German - which is when 'Ellen Douglas' sings a prayer addressed to Mary, the Mother of God, and from which segment of the main lyrics, further adaptations were subsequently made by numerous people basically using the whole Latin prayer 'Ave Maria' and hence the song has come to be known as that. Schubert's own arrangement was said to have been first performed for the Countess Sophie Weissenwolff at the Austrian town of Steyregg, and dedicated to the Countess following which she herself became known as 'the Lady of the Lake. Ellen Douglas sings the prayer for Divine help and counsel in the exile of her father for refusing to rebel against King James... ...who happens to have been an ancestor of mine(!). Not a big deal - there were more than fifty acknowledged bastards of his son later on. This version above demonstrates once again that today's Trance in particular and melodic EDM are the LEGITIMATE offspring of the classical styles introduced by only the greatest classical composers such as Beethoven, and Bach, and as now quite obviously above in this specific case, Franz Schubert.
