Superzoom bridge cameras are known for wildlife and bird photography and video because of the big zoom lenses, but how do they compare with camcorders that have the same sensor size? This video compares all kinds of camcorders, bridge cameras and compact pocket cameras, all of which have the 1/2.3" sensor size. Could a little pocket camera actually be used to video or photograph birds, wildlife or outdoor shots? After all, many of them have similar focal length long zoom lenses. How do bridge cameras perform for normal use like filming people indoors or vlogging? Can bridge cameras be used as a vlogging camera to make a vlog? How good are the colors and how sharp are the lenses on all these cameras? Find out in this informative comparison video. What is a bridge camera? A bridge camera is a camera that has a giant zoom lens permanently attached. Cameras featured are:

@@MarkusPix If any of those Nikon superzooms is somewhat "ok", its the P950. Also "too much" zoom/magnification, yet much smaller. I also dont like it, i rather would get a compact camera with 1/2,3" sensor and 20x optical zoom or my even smaller Sony W830 which is just fine, only 720p30 video and bad autofocus, but it works and has also nice, "classic" look in phto and video.

The Lumix FZ300 is my current go-to camera for travel, along with a smaller camera. It's ironic because I have an FZ200 camera that I dug out of my barely-used collection when I was doing some volunteer maintenance work. I took so many great pictures with it that I started to really appreciate it and bought an FZ300.

Expensive and disappointing : If the light is good the images are nice and sharp ( when the focus works ) if the light is not good after 2000mm the shake is to much , so you need a tripod , it can be used to see saturn if you have a lot of time to manual focus on saturn ( autofocus on planets is bad , on star clusters is bad ) Even the p950 is a better camera or just buy the p900 and save so money. My wife had the p1000 and after she started using the fz1000 she did not look back. i wanted to see for myself if the p1000 is good or not , there is no perfect camera , the p1000 is decent but the fz1000 is a swiss knife jack of all trades. in short , decent - bad autofocus , the shake over 2000mm is to much . needs good light for good photos ( like all cameras ) After testing over 30 bridge cameras i have : the legendary sx50hs , sx60hs , fz1000 , i had the rx10iv but i did not keep it , fz1000 is amazing for the price.@@prathameshbagewadi217

First I absolutely adore your channel and have been a subscriber for 3 years now and my wife as well and you have helped us both on so many levels! I'm not bragging at all I only have the FZ300 for filming (not pics) that I purchased last year on special for only $550 CAD (approx. $390 USD!) it was a tie for me at the time with the VX981 after doing a lot of research and watching channels like yours. It has been mostly fantastic for video and I even managed putting a cage on it and even a Matte Box. However this year I found that for what I do and so many reasons I really need a camcorder and of course a no brainer, I went with the 981 thanks to all your reviews on it. I will receive it tomorrow and can't wait to start making some content with it as well. Thank you for your insights and in depth reviews, you are very interesting to listen to that I have watched almost every single video beginning to end and some twice.

I have used a few Bridge Cameras and currently have a Lumix fz80 (fz82 in Europe) as well as a FZ1000. The FZ1000 is a heavy old thing, you get nice photographs from it and I use it for most of my videos shot indoors. The fz80 is my go to travel camera. It has taken a beating over the last 4 years and comes back for more. A 60x zoom (20-1200mm equivalent) is great for all sorts of situations in good light. Camcorders do have a much smoother zoom but as I tend to shoot more stills than video so the cameras are more geared to what I need. Great comparison test Markus.

Bridge/super zoom cameras are still a great deal on the used market right now, even with so many digicams going way up in price. I have been buying up quite a few from Canon, Panasonic, Nikon and Fuji. Just picked up a Canon Powershot SX540 HS for $130. It's got the same sensor as the SX70 and its 24mm-1200mm is very close to the same zoom range. They make for great, cheap portrait cameras in good natural lighting and some of the ones I have with CCD sensors have a filmic quality I really like. I find them more useable than my VX981, get a better depth of field. Looking forward to the 1 inch sensor video!

I loooove your enthusiasm for these small (and some, really affordable) cameras. Of course, we can tell that you have the means to purchase any camera available, no matter the price! All of these make me feel so much confident about keeping and using my older bridge cameras and smaller photo cameras. (I keep a Canon SX60HS, which I would like upgrade the SX70, hopefully soon, before they stop selling them new). I also keep a Sony RX100vii, a little, very customizable camera.

I have a Panasonic HC-V180K which has a 50x optical zoom and 90x with digital crop. For investigations, I would avoid AI integrated systems as it could potentially be dismissed in court as an inaccurate representation of reality/altered evidence. At least with the older methods of digital zoom which only crop in on the image, which can be more easily defended. One case where something like this popped up was with the Rittenhouse trial.

Great video!! You finally touched on the Nikon P1000. I was waiting and waiting for it. Agree whole heartedly that the camera is more about the lens. I have one because I love bridge cameras in addition to being a Nikon fan boy. It's pros & cons to bridge cameras like there are to pretty much everything in life. The zoom on that camera is out of this world. I just wished Nikon or some other camera manufacture could put a APS-C size sensor in a bridge camera with that much zoom power. It would probably have to be twice as big. Lol! To each their own when it comes to camera sizes. Markus, your videos keep me coming back for more and more. Have a good one.

I'm still using my lumix fz-72 for travel and moon shots. Sometimes bad feelings about it when iso goes over 400, but in low iso (exterior-daylight) it's a joy. I combine it with a m100 with the 22mm f2 in the other pocket to have "all situations" covered in travel or hiking. Fun and cheap combination

If anyone cares, Lumix FZ300/FZ330 has f2.8 constant aperture through the 600mm range. Also weather sealed. If I could change anything it would be to have at least 16mp instead of 12mp. If the light is right it's a lovely camera. You can also use digital zoom to double (I think) the reach.
@simval84
@simval84 8 ай бұрын
Honestly, with a 1/2.3 inch sensor, 16 MP is overkill. Even at 100 ISO you have so much noise at the pixel level that I think the effective resolution of the photos it takes is no more than 8 MP. Seriously, I had a ZS60 and I once compared a 8 MP photo to a full 16 MP photo and even blowing out the 8MP photo to 200% zoom to compare to 100% 16MP, I just couldn't tell much of a difference.
@bingbong4848
@bingbong4848 8 ай бұрын
@simval84 Ah ok fair enough. I don't know enough about sensor science to disagree. If they did release a new version of the camera today with same size sensor, I would hope that sensor tech has moved on enough to make a higher mp count worthwhile, even if only at the pixel peeping level 😀

For superzoom cameras I use the Sony DSC-H20, which is a small little SLR-style super-zoom pocket friendly camera. Yeah it's old, it's from 2009 and only shoots 720/30p and doesn't have a very wide angle nor great autofocus, but it zooms out to 380mm equiv. and has image stabilization! (Albeit not very effective, but better than nothing) I also have a DSC-W730 which is also a pocket-size superzoom. Zooms out to 200mm something. Again, only 720p video and autofocus isn't great. But the image stabilization on it is incredible!!! It gives smartphones a run for their money as far as stabilization goes. Last mention is a Sony DSC-T100. Came out in 2007. Tiny pocket camera with a sliding lens cover. It's also got surprisingly good IS and you can optically zoom while recording video, which at the time was uncommon for point n' shoot cameras. Again, autofocus isn't great, it only shoots VGA (480p), and low light sensitivity is pretty poor.

Panasonic looks better imo, I have the HX99 I also have the RX100M3 and the ZV-1, but Panasonic LX10, TZ-200 and the TZ95 (ZS80) looks sharper, the colours are great and I like the noise pattern, the autofocus is not so great LOL but thats to be expected, what I mean by that the AF is not as good as Sony, but if you know how to work a Micro Four Thirds Panasonic camera, you can reduce the AF issues on these cameras, basically contrast depth autofocus works better on smaller sensors then they do bigger ones so you suffer less hunting, but in low light the Sony will outperform it hands down in AF department but both camera types will look pretty bad in low light just keep that in mind unless you know how to shoot in low light without butchering the image, low ISO

It's nice seeing some content covering bridge cameras. I use a Fuji FinePix S1 that I picked up a few years ago for less than $200. It has 1200mm lens (50x optical), with really good IBIS. I refer to it as an image-stabilized pocket telescope. I've used it for astrophotography. It'll easily image craters on the Moon. I've also picked up Jupiter's moons with it too. In the hand it feels like a smaller sized DSLR. It has a nice smooth zoom, although it's prone to focus hunting. For video it'll do 1080p at 60FPS. It has a few higher framerate modes too. All video modes have a max 15 minute record time, though. There's lots of options in the menu, and you also get that Fuji Chrome color science!

I would go for a RX10 IV or a RX100 VII, but im also very happy with a W830 with 20MP 1/2,3" CCD sensor and just 720p30. Its a photo camera mainly with decent zoomability (25-200mm) and it fits in everything, better zoom than my iPhone 15 at least beyond 3-4x on the iPhone, but from 0,5x to 2x the iPhone is superior. Still, the camera is something different, at good light the colors for example are awesome in many scenes, mainly flowers, green environment, around the woods, fields,.... I have also from 2005 a Sony CCD compact camera with 7,2MP 1/1,8" sensor, on top of a 2,8-5,6 "Zeiss" branded lens, this camera has pretty pleasent bokeh and 3d pop for closeup portraits, many nice flash functions (+/-, long exposure flash which is the most awesome for creative stuff, "advanced flash" whatever it does,..), at least a manual mode up to 30 seconds exposure unlike the W830 Sony which is ONLY automatic and max. 2 seconds exposure. Sadly all of those "newer" compact cameras such as RX 10 IV and so are just super expensive and i dont get it, they are technically outdated (no modern stabiliser setup, noisy zoom motors, "old" sensors with poor low light handling, many like the P1000 have ridicilous and "useless" specs instead of being a nice allrounder as a bridge camera should be. A modernized, yet affordable 1/2,3" TINY camera with 10x zoom or so should be recreated with a modern 20MP CMOS sensor, proper video and autofocus and actioncam like stabilizer. Could be even a superior vlogging camera if someone would just try it.

Get that FZ300 to Kasey! I’ve been on about it for years. He’d have so much fun wth it. The dfd auto focus works so much better with the built in lens. Mic Jack and constant f/2.8 aperture with 600mm reach.

Thanks for the comparison, very interesting to see all these different cameras. I have only used one bridge camera. It was my dads film bridge camera from the 1990s. I don't remember what make it was though. Seeing the Lumix FZ300 at 4:20 I am not so keen on how the background looks but I do like Panasonic's color science, especially on their newer Panasonic cameras and I love how their menu systems and ergonomics are more or less the same between their cameras. The last camcorder I had was a Canon HF G30 and while I found the image quality a bit soft and lacked detail for me, especially in wide shots, I do like how easy those camcorders are to use. I like the Nikon P1000 image quality and the colors, but not the jello shake going on. I remember hearing about it when it came out and being blown away by the zoom range it has. I did consider getting one for wildlife, but the shake is what made me hold off getting it. From the footage you showed of the Kodak AZ901, while it doesn't have that much detail to the images, I like the look of the colors.

I have a Panasonic bridge camera its the one that's 20-1200mm if it was full frame. Its fun to do those super zooms but the image its not the best. The lens kind of takes a hit after you zoom so long and you can see the air waving in the air. But sometimes that's also kind of cool. I'm happy to have one.

I see how spoiled I am with my Sony 405 that you recommend.. which also takes good still images.. ideal for YT thumbnails. A couple of things you didn't look at was how wide angle all of them do and which use AA batteries.. I also have a Nikon Coolpix L100 that uses AA batteries.. made in about 2011.. really nice for stills and a good wide lens.

@@MarkusPix 😻 It is easier long term if everything runs on AA batteries. Tascam DR-05 and Zoom H1 use AA. Something I learnt years ago.. Estate Agents in the UK (they sell house's) like a 28mm lens as it's about as wide angle as you can go without distortion.. my Nikon L100 has some form of electronic anti distortion.. a feature which seemed to disappear in later models, they also stopped using AA batteries. Mic input's is another thing. Could you do something about the external controller that plugs into the Sony 405 apparently it is used on other models. It's possibly a video in its own right about useful extras each manufacturer does. Have you done a video actually about ND filters etc and also using them for the 'blurry background' Contra Zoom using the 405 might be a fun video. Bella 🐈 & Mark.

Either way for videos I just worked them on post; but for my jogging videos, barely to no filters! Thank you, Markus!

Canon recently made a series of "vlog cameras" that are like those Samsung action cameras. They're verticle, run for a decent time, and have a 1'inch sensor. They're 430 bucks too. I just wish they would make them "camcorder" shaped sense it already works as a compact design.

The Lumix FZ 300 does look great! It's not badly priced. Like I mentioned in my earlier comment. I am going to get one more Sony CX 405, because it is a good camcorder and I like to cover events with a multi camera shoot with the same kind of camera so that the images match from the different angles. So, it wouldn't hurt to put an extra hundred dollars on the Lumix FZ300 for those photo and specific video shoots and projects of such. Markus, the Panasonic VX 981 was the camcorder that you did "Spy Girl," and the cooking shows with, right? I like the small size of it. It's so compact making it a great travel camera and video projects. It has a very good image quality and simple handling. Markus, with the cell phone revolution seemingly coming, what will you have to post? Camcorders and Bridge cameras has to be returned on the store shelves because we want them and we buy them!

you mentioned stabilisation, i'm no expert but I did encounter the need for solution, I got hold of a remote controlled motorised base for a tripod, i can get an accurate distance shot at 500x, I found an interesting feature in the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H400 63x optical which isn't listed on stats, it takes a 500x equivalent photo shot, on the vga setting and must have some touch up software, the shots I got on a hot day with optical interferance were crisp clean, amazing, I only paid around the 50ish cost for it.

Markus, I really enjoy using the Sony 405. I have two of them to do a lot of my video recording. I better get one more before the stupid stores take all the camcorders off of their shelves. They must think that cell phones are a more marketable device for recording videos. But, cell phones will never measure up to the fun that I have with using camcorders. I like tinkering with the features on camcorder. Lumix ZX80, Panasonic VX981 and HX 99 are camcorders that I must get. I like small camcorders too. Especially the ones among the favorites mentioned. Cell phones storage runs out. I heap rather use camcorders where I can pop in a SD card and keep on trucking. Now-days cell phone companies are making cell phones that doesn't have replacement batteries or even removable back covers. You'll basically have to buy a whole new phone if the battery stops charging. Yeah, cell phone companies are making cell phones that does shoot video really nice. But, it just isn't the same feel that camcorders gives. Cell phones don't have pop out screens and a lot of the cool features that camcorders gives. I employ that the stores reconsider taking camcorders off of their shelves. Thanks, Markus for this video: "Small Sensor Superzoom Bridge cameras vs Camcorders vs Compact Pocket Cameras."

I had an HX99 and a Panasonic FZ80 a few years back and I wish I hadn’t sold them! Got them for a good price, sold them for just about the same, now they go for way too much on eBay! They didn’t take the cleanest photos, but they were a lot of fun. Unfortunately my iPhone 15 Pro Max essentially can reach the same zoom range as the HX99 so I can’t really justify the price but, but they were quite a lot of fun to mess around with!
