I am a sony a6400 user. For me my kit includes Sigma 16mm and 30mm f1.4, Viltrox 56mm f1.4 and sony 55-210 f4.5-6.3. This combo pretty much covers everything for me and the entire kit with 4 extra batteries and ND filters fit in my shoulder bag.

I like prime lenses for when I'm going out specifically to shoot something in particular, but any other time the kit lens is frankly more than enough to get decently sharp photos with enough focal range to be good all around and only falls apart a little in lower light situations.

I just could never get excited about the Canon 50mm, and traded it in on a Tamron 45 mm, which I reach for far more often. I own the EF-M 32mm which is just a very fine lens. We'll see what Canon does with the R APS-C line, and here's hoping they capture that same magic for a similar lens for that camera. In my experience, there never was an equivalent in the EF-S or non-L line up.

I added an M50II to an existing 5DIV/90D kit with a full set of L and EFS lenses. Having previously used the diminuative SL1, I thought I'd be using the EFS lenses with the adapter. But I picked up the Viltrox speed booster with low expectations, assuming it would be a gimmick, and was quickly suprised how it breathed new life into my old full-frame glass! My old 24-105 f4 IS L + SB performs similarly but effectively like a 27-120 f2.8 (as if it were on a full-frame body). It's one of those rare things where it's too good to be true, but it actually is true. Having said that, there are absolutely benefits from having native M mount lenses, and I intend to extend my collection beyond just the 15-45. I've carried lots of big, expensive gear on my travels before, but never got as good photos and videos as when I paired a little SL1 and 15-85 with a stabilized GoPro. No, the quality would certainly not compare to my 5DIV and 16-35 L. It was the best photos and videos because the gear itself was never an impediment. I could take it anywhere without concern. I'm looking very forward now to seeing how the M50II is going to improve upon that experience, with all of the features of an 80D but significantly smaller than even the SL1! Videos such as yours are invaluable to people like me learning the system. Thank you.

Good explanation! I just got myself the Sigma 16mm EF-M lens, specifically for content creation for my YT channel. I used the 22mm pancake lens up to now, but I needed the additional wide angle the 16mm provide. Also, the Sigma 16mm has a very low f-stop, exactly what I needed for that nice depth of field it provides.

Yes yes yes! Found this channel through my friends Heather and Tom. I have shot with the m50 for the last two years. I am still am, but I recently upgraded my livestream setup with a Sony a6400 (sigma 16mm 1.4) and a secondary angle with the a6000. Which before I was using a Logitech Brio 4k. Buttt I am not tempted to using the 6400 to film my normal videos. Love this info on the m50! Great perspective with the focal length and testing with the kit lens. Never thought about that!

Sound like a great setup. The great thing about the M50, is that it’s just bullet proof, it’s ultra-reliable and the autofocus is almost like a mind reader, it just knows! If you like the M50, the M6 Mark II is the upgrade to the M50, it’s one one of the best cameras on the market and hardly anyone knows about it. It shoot 4K full sensor too. (Side note; Love Tom and Heather’s stuff as well, such good people)

I have an M5 and (probably) too many primes. :-) 7Artisans 7.5, 2.8, Canon 22, 2, Canon 28 Macro, Sigma 30, 1.4, 7Artisans 35 1.2, and Canon 50, 1.8. But, I would happily trade a stop or two of aperture for a more compact lens with something like f2.8 max aperture. Sadly, I doubt Canon will release any more lenses for this mount which probably means third parties will probably stop developing them too. BTW: The 7Artisans 35, 1.2 is one of my favourites despite its flaws. It must be the size. :-)

@@markwiemels I have the Mark 1 version which is very retro in styling and optical design. It's not the sharpest lens, but there is a certain "something" to its rendering that I like. Plus the whole manual focus/aperture and the focal length take me back to my first SLRs which all shipped with a 50mm prime as kit.

at the end, if you are not a macro guy nor an astro guy nor a portrait guy, if you are a guy who wants something versatile after your video wins the viltrox 23mm 1,4. And it wins over the canon 32 mm 1,4 because the viltrox is better for videos (but at the same time very good also for photos, even though the canon is not good for videos but the best one for photos). I think I will buy the viltrox... but I've heard that the viltrox is not so quick for the autofocus and it has a vignette problem. You are the only one, or one of the few people on youtube who doesn't talk about this issue.
@markwiemels
@markwiemels Жыл бұрын
I have never had an issue with the Viltrox autofocus at all, I'm a surprised to hear that, all the EF-M lenses are STM motors, so none of them are very fast, but I find the Viltrox performs like my other lenses. The vignette is present on all lenses of this type, including the EF-M 32mm, it's not at a level where I notice it, or find it to be an issue. I think it's important to keep in mind, that a lot the lens "testing" on KZbin, does show the lens performance, but may not actually be reflected in real world results or use.

Appreciate the video! I have the m6 mark II and started off with the 15-45mm and the 18-150mm and wasn’t feeling it with the camera until I started getting a few primes. Big big difference. My collection is small but growing. This is a good reference to come back to when I’m ready for a new lens. Now how about a video on the best prime lens lineup paired with the ef to ef-m adapter (if there are more than the 50mm+. I.e I found the 40mm to be pretty great)

recently i answered the ever long question, which lens would you keep if you could only keep one of your lenses, the sigma 100-400mm won in the end, but, heres the thing, when i pit all my prime lenses against each other, and i have alot it came down to two, the canon efm 32mm 1.4 and the vintage Pentacon M42 mount 50mm ƒ1.8. The reason the pentacon held on to the more modern canon was the amazing render it has, so it came down to the auto focus hit rate of the 32mm vs the render of the fully manual pentacon, when thinking about the images from the 32mm its yep, nailed 99% of every one, with the pentacon the hit rate was alot less because of the manual focusing but the wow factor and smile factor were alot bigger., we not just talking abot getting the shot but really creating the image. as mentioned in a one lens only situation the sigma 100-400 won its battle in the zoom lens shootout and alas it had to be the winner over the top prime lens which was kinda sorta the pentacon, so no, you really don't need to spend a crippling amount on a very good and outstanding prime lens, both the adapter and the pentacon lens cost less than £50 together,

Nearly all these lens went on my “list”. It took some time to enumerate them by priority because I have so many scenarios I would like to equip myself to shoot. To which, this video has been extremely helpful and Ive watched it numerous times. My first purchase beyond the m50 kit lens was the 22mm f/2. I use it to take head shots of my oldest sons theatre group. I bought the m50 to photo and film my two HS aged boys. One of which plays sports and the other is in theatre. And we’re a rock climbing family. I need a telephoto lens that allows me to capture the action up close. Finding a lens for outdoor sports and climbing is not a challenge as low light is of no concern. However, finding a reasonably priced telephoto that is fast enough for the low light in a theatre setting is my challenge. I’d like to simply purchase the 70-200mm f/2.8 and a speed booster then call it a day but that lens is pricey. Idk if a native m-mount lens with a polarizing filter would work? Or an ef lens with a speed booster? Or perhaps a fast ef prime, an adapter and a 2x extender? Or bite the bullet and save $ for that 70-200mm f/2.8? Or will the 70-200mm f/4 be adequate? Any suggestions that you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thx Mark.
@markwiemels
@markwiemels 3 жыл бұрын
Low light telephoto is always a problem, it means bigger more expensive lenses. The speed boost is cool, but noticeably hurts image quality, it can be cool for more vintage/artistic looking shots, but not for detail and fidelity (use a standard adapter, not the speed booster). The 70-200 f2.8 would be very nice, but depending on how low the light is, f2.8 may not even be enough. thats something you could test with your 22mm f2, see if f2.8 is bright enough in those situations. Another option would be a fast prime lens, maybe even a manual focus vintage lens adapted.

@@markwiemels terrific, that’s a good idea to test with my f/2.. b/c as you said, the f/2.8 may not even be enough. In the meantime, I’ll have get front row seats and test out my new 22f/2. Thx again, Mark.

Thanks for letting me know. Amazon does some strange things, the link is giving me a choice of mounts, but it's not super obvious, and if I select add to basket and don't pick a mount, it just adds the Sony Lens. I would just link another listing, but this is the cheapest by about $25. BTW, thanks for using the links, it helps a lot. Even if you buy from a diffrent listing, within 24 hours, I will still get the credit. Thanks for the support.

I have the following prime lenses for my M100 and M6 Mk2. I have the EF-M 32mm f/1.4 and 22mm f/2.0. On top of them, I have bought the following TTArtisan lenses ; 17mm f/1.4, 23mmf/1.4, 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.2, the Voightlander LM 28mm f/2.0 Ultron and the Voightlander LM 35mm f/2.0 APO. The last two is used via a Leica M -- EOS-M Adaptor. They all wotk very well on my two cameras. I love the fully manual lenses more especially the two from Voightlander. The Voightlander lenses provide excellent image quality and very easy to use. The main advantage of fully manual lenses is it does not hunt in low light and can also do zone focusing easily, not possible with the AF lenses. Also, the excellent Sigma 56mm f1.4. What say you ? Would you recommend what I have ?

@@markwiemels I have the EF-M 11-22mm f/4.0-5.6 which is quite good. Not a prime though but I have the Laowa 10mm f/2.0 on my Lumix GX9. Have been doing photography for about 40 years. Recently, I have decided to use Voightlamder Leica M mount lenses due to its versatility. If I need to change the brand of camera or go full frame again I just have to buy the relevant adaptor for it. In that way, I can use my Leica M mount lenses forever. Usually, I don't like to go too wide like a 15mm on full frame. Its not a perspective I would use often. I must say the TTArtisan APS-C manual lenses that I have are unexpectedly good. I have no issue with them except for tne 23mm f/1.4 which has a bit of uneveness in its plane of sharpness at certain f/stops. They are very affordable too. The Voightlanders which I bought are excellent. You can check out some of my photos at my fb group called " Photography beyond format ".

Speed booster is an interesting one, you loose detail and clarity, but gain some really strong, almost vintage looking, background blur.
