After our trip to Langkawi, we headed to Georgetown, in Penang, Malaysia. One day we walked around and did all these things in a single day. More coming on: migrationology....
Penang, Malaysia is an island just off the coast of the West Coast of Malaysia. It’s one of the most famous areas of Malaysia, especially known for its rich and diverse culture and for its food - many people come to Penang just to eat - as did I. Ying and I arrived to Penang from Langkawi, and we stayed in Penang for about a week, doing some work, and eating out way through the city. One day though, we decided to put on our shoes and go to visit as many of the attractions in the center of the city as we could. So this travel videos is an overview of the top things to do in Georgetown, Penang, but also a travel guide as well. Hope you enjoy to!
To begin the day, I started off with a Penang tourist map and located all the places we wanted to go. Since we were staying close to the Georgetown World Heritage Inc., that’s where we first decided to stop. It’s more of an information center, so after just a few minutes we continued on our way to the Chew Jetty, one of the couple of Chinese docks where homes are built over the water. On the way though, we walked through Lebuh Armenian (one of the most famous streets in Penang), past George Town street art, and also briefly stopped at Cheah Kongsi. The Chew Jetty was a nice place to walk around for a few minutes, there wasn’t a lot to do there, but mostly some small souvenir shops and some nice places to take photos.
We continued walking and passed the Queen Victory Lighthouse and then we continued on to Fort Cornwallis, a British built fort, and the only fort in Malaysia - though as they said it wasn’t ever used for battle. I was a little disappointed visiting Fort Cornwallis in Penang because we paid a pretty big entrance fee, but there really wasn’t anything to see inside - I could have seen it all from the outside. Anyway, we continued on walking around Penang, and then circled back past a cathedral. By this time we were getting quite hungry, so we headed into Little India, and then continued to a famous restaurant called Kapitan for tandoori chicken. I didn’t know they were really famous for their rice biryani, but I got a couple pieces of tandoori chicken and naan, it they were both incredible.
In the afternoon, we first stopped at the Goddess of Mercy Temple in Penang, and walked around for a few minutes, and then continued on to Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, one of Penang’s main attractions and a place I was really looking forward to visiting. Mr. Cheong, an insanely wealthy Chinese business man built the Blue Mansion and it has now been restored and it’s actually open as a hotel, but they also give a couple of guided tours each day. The tour took 45 minutes, and it was beautiful to see. The only thing I wish is that we could have seen a little more of the Blue Mansion, because unfortunately we didn’t get to see much, but mostly listened to the history of the mansion - still it was worth seeing in Penang.
To finish of one day of things to do in Penang, Georgetown, we visited the Kapitan Keling Mosque, and then lastly we went to Khoo Kongsi. For dinner to end this day in Penang, we went to a restaurant to eat dim sum, and a few other Chinese dishes as well.
Thank you for watching this “things to do in Geogetown, Penang” travel video. Hope you enjoyed it, and hope it will give you some ideas for what to do when you visit. More Penang street food videos coming soon!

Georgetown is one of my favorite places on earth. It is such an interesting city, full of old buildings, temples, mosques etc. And its also one of the best places I know for food. I just love it.

Stayed at the Blue Mansion Approx 12 years ago. There used to be an “eating courtyard” next door at night (prob built over now). Beautiful enigmatic building. Supposed to have the best feng shui on the island, yet the downfall of the inhabitants were so devastating. I can assure you the place is haunted by great sadness.

I have to agree with you when you talked about how overpriced it was going in Fort Cornwallis. Being a Penangite myself, I used to go there when the entrance fee was none, then they had to put a price on the entrance fee since more and more tourists became interested in the place, HOWEVER the price that they have now is WAY overpriced since there is really not much to see inside. If they charged us Malaysians maybe RM5 and RM10 for foreigners it would still be acceptable because they have to upkeep the place but entrance fee that they have now is just ridiculous to the point that I'm slightly ashamed of them doing that to people especially the foreigners.

A great video of a great place Mark...I find walking around George Town fascinating...as you say...it's a living museum. So many choices for food there. We found ourselves eating Indian food more than any other when we were there. Although I really enjoy having a good curry for breakfast which is something that doesn't happen in Australia as far as I'm aware. The street I really enjoy most is Chulia Street. We arrived there from the airport quite late around 11 pm. After we had checked in we headed out and the place was buzzing Been to Penang twice now in 2014 and 2015. Love it that much we'll be heading back again in 2016

Mark, you should have stop at Hameed mee sotong (noodles with dried squid sambal) and enjoy the coconut shake at the food court nearby the Fort Cornwallis and 1 more attraction is the nasi lemak, if not mistaken named Projek Nasi Lemak Box, just beside the field

If you visit Penang during the Chinese New Year you will see more vibrant atmosphere primarily in those Chinese temples like the Khoo Kongsi and Kek Lok Si as the lights will be lit up and lion dances performance will be held and not to forget the fireworks throughout Penang. From Lebuh Armenian, if you walk straight towards Lebuh Acheh (towards the heritage hotel), on your left you'll find this indian restaurant (in an old shoplot. It's more like canteen/mess). It has no signboard, locals call this place kedai Muthu. I've been going there for ages and I've only seen a few tourists so far, but at lunch time the place will be full house, all locals (business hours 12.45pm-3pm). The food there, goddammnit, is simply freaking delicious. Nothing fancy here, all are basic south Indian foods, but the taste, out of this world!(the price? Dirt cheap! Rice is free, and you can ask for as much as you can eat, no matter how many times) They been there for as long as i can remember, and everything is cooked fresh every morning. If you guys visit penang again, go look for this place, trust me, you wont regret.

Praise the Lord Jesus Christ. _1 John 4:7_ Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. _Corinthians 13:4-7_ Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. _1 Corinthians __13:13_ So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love..
