What a charming lady. I've used closed captions since I was a child even though I can hear. My parents didn't speak English growing up but they could read it no problem so I was used to having them on all the time. It wasn't until I started watching TV at my friend's homes that I realized I was depending on them because I couldn't always understand what people would say (bad diction, sound, or accents.) To this day, I have a hard time understanding a lot of song lyrics without looking them up. When I started watching anime, my friends would tell me they had to get used to reading the subtitles when it was easy/natural for me. That's when I realized that most people don't use CC. I love them. They're wonderful!

i notice multiple times that Marlee has to get the attention of the interviewer back on her because hes looking at the interpreter instead of at her... how rude is he?! the interpreter is JUST a voiceover for Marlee, he isnt the one saying the words...
@tamraarmstrong41469 жыл бұрын
well the interpreter probably confused him when he said he could look at him. he didn't look at him too much.
@whitneypickle8 жыл бұрын
+Tiamat Storm I don't think he is trying to be rude. I think he is just unfamiliar with being around a deaf person. When you aren't used to something like this, you tend to default to what you are used to. Hearing people are taught to look in the eyes of who is speaking. Marlee is a professional and I'm sure where she finds it frustrating, she probably doesn't feel disrespected.
@ginniekinz54014 жыл бұрын
Whitney Faye exactly what I always think with those kind of interviews. Most people don’t want a rude reputation to follow them, so I doubt it was purposely. He’s human, and we all forget and make mistakes. and other than that little oops, he doesn’t seem rude to her at all. People are so quick to judge nowadays, it’s actually scary at times.

The British TV networks seem to be good about closed captioning shows online. I've watched videos on BBC, ITV, and Channel 4 players with subtitles. I'm not deaf/HOH; I just find it easier to focus on shows with the captions on.
@emmacarolinereads8 жыл бұрын
+Emorkia I think it depends. When it comes to the local and national channels that is correct but you get broadcasters like Sky who don't want to do anything or claim "technical difficulties." I don't know if there are subtitles for Sky's online services but for their added perks of on demand, subtitling is non-existent. The Subtitle It campaign is doing its bit to try and force the government to take the issue seriously but it remains a fight. I do know what you mean about the captions though. My sister watches tv and films with captions (she's profoundly Deaf) and because I've got so used to them there that it is strange for me to not have them on - unless the show is live and then they're turned off because there are too many inaccuracies or there is a timing delay.

Most deaf people don't really care for using their voices, especially those in Marlee's generation - those who grew up being forced to talk. She can do it, and she does when she feels it's necessary, but she preferrs not to.

@tayllor29009 жыл бұрын
+emma poulsen The interpreter is not signing when he talks because he is essentially being Marlee's voice if she were hearing. She is signing and he is saying out loud what she is signing. He is basically her go between for the deaf and hearing world. I very much want to go to sign language school to be an interpreter. Not only is it something I am passionate about...signing is so much fun, you make great money as well. I was in the hospital with a deaf kid when I was a teen and one of his rights as a patient was to have an interpreter with him art all times. I took her to the side to ask about how she got the job and she grew up hearing with deaf parents so she was already fluent in ASL. She told me that on call interpreters for a hospital which is what she was got paid $60.00 an hour starting pay!! So I can help someone doing something I love and make great money. I would love to be personal interpreter.
