My grandpa bought a model 60 back on the 70s and ever since i was a little kid i would see it locked up in his pole barn. When i got old enough he taught me how to shoot it. Now that I'm 29 my grandpa sadly has dementia. I took the gun, completely restored it, fixed all the scratches and dings in the wood stock and re-stained it. Now its locked away as a reminder of all those good times. It will never leave my collection.

My family too had a share of Marlin 22s. My oldest brother was given a Glenfield Model 60, exact in appearance to yours, when we were children in the 1970s. It was the first firearm I ever fired. I was later awarded my own 22 but it was a Marlin Model 101. Later, the 1990s, I came by a rare Marlin 22 M-1 Carbine which is a model 60 with a 18" barrel and a wooden shroud over the barrel giving the impression of a military M-1 Carbine. I loaned it to my father who appreciated the high mounted sights but it was stolen from his pickup some dark night long ago. Basically, any outdoorsman knows that no matter how many rifles and long guns you may own, you MUST have a good repeating 22 for general purposes in your collection and likely to have it with you anytime you go afield. No? Thus, in the late 2000s, I found some on sale at Carter's Country in Houston and bought one for the low price of just $100! Like that Marlin M-1 carbine, it didn't function correctly, but unlike the M-1 model, this brand new rifle was returned to the factory and was set right. I have, like you, affixed a nice Redfield four power wide field scope and see through rings. I intend to fire it with high and hyper velocity cartridges for predators and nuisance animals on the ranch. I have the 101 loaded with CCI Low velocity 22 Longs for rabbits and squirrels. You know what? That old single shot 101 turned out to be a tack driver. So is my newer Model 60. Do you agree that a outdoorsman, like a good pocket knife, has to have a good repeating 22?

Yes, I agree. Every well rounded firearms collection should have a good .22 semi-auto in it.

Icarryone hey really like your rifle , I’m sure you do , but do you still have this beauty? , and have you herd of the DIP trigger and charge Handel ? , diversified innovative products is the company who makes the adjustable trigger , it really made my marlin 60 become a much more dependable rifle with the durability of the machined aluminum trigger and trigger guard assembly , and the helical charge Handel just makes it easier on my index finger when I load the rifle , the stock bolt Handel always hit a pressure point or pinched my nerve in my index finger when I grab it , I have damaged nerves in my right hand that’s why , I recommend you take a look at the company at the least and maybe do a video about the products they offer for the marlin 60

I just bought 10-year old used one at a gun show for $125. I put a $28 Chinese scope from Amazon on it and took it out to to the range to zero it. Literally quarter-inch groups (all three shots touching in a pretty triangle at 25 yards). I couldn't be more pleased. I bought it for hunting squirrels and rabbits, and it seems like just the rifle for the job. About regrets: I had a Husqvarna Swedish 6.5mm Mauser in mint condition that I bought back in the $80s that I loved, and I had to sell it when my business plummeted during the recession 10 years ago in order to pay the rent. I miss that rifle so much that I dream of it sometimes. Thanks for a great story. The Marlin 60 is a great American rifle.

I grew up on Marlin 22s also. Mine was a model 101 single shot bolt model while my older brother had the Glenfield Model 60. His, in our father's pickup, was stolen. About 30 years later, I was given a rather rare Model 99 carbine which, I loaned to my father for use at the ranch and which, also in my father's pickup, was later stolen. I still had the 101 which I found is a terrific squirrel gun with a Marlin scope scavenged from another rusted 22 bolt repeater. Yet, I just had to have a semi-auto 22. It seems to me that NO OUTDOORSMAN is properly equipped without a good one and I'm certain many or even most of your readers will agree. I continue to enjoy the professionalism of your video productions and the colorful commentary you share.

A very good but honest video. I know it had hard for you to talk about this. I always respected you and your videos. I now have much greater respect for you. I experienced a similar problem. On my first job at about 14 years young. I worked as a dishwasher at local restaurant on weekends. For one dollar an hour. I worked and saved and bought a 20 gauge shotgun. My dad put in his name for me. I sold it to a nephew. Who sold it to his nephew. My great nephew. I have been trying to buy it back the last few years. He refused to sell it. It's hurtful when I think about it. But on the bright side. I do have a Model 30 Winchester Shot gun that belonged to my father. I will treasure it always. I know just how you feel. I'm happy you were able to get another model 60. God Bless You Always.c

Really enjoyed your story and I can relate in many ways. As for the Model 60, about 2 years ago I was getting back into squirrel hunting with a dog and wanted something other than the old single shot 22 I had. Just so happened a local gun store had the synthetic Model 60 on sale for like $129. I had heard good things about them and decided to take a chance on one. Well not only does mine also feed everything I've put in it so far but it's an absolute laser. One hole groups from the bench all day long and I would not be afraid to put it up against anything else out there. We have some very tall pine and oak trees here and in the late season when there no leaves this is the gun I take. I've got that same mount with a Nikon rimfire 3-9x and sometimes I have to back pretty far away from the tree my dogs on in order to get a shot. Ive put a Federal hollow point right in the ear of many squirrels with that gun and I don't think I'd sell it for ten times what I paid for it. For the price it's been my best firearm purchase hands down

I obsessed over a Marlin 60 just like Ralphie did hid Red Rider as well. My heart ached wanting onc until my dad brought home one he gave somebody he worked with at that old factory, that didn't pay much, 20 dollars for a ragged out gummed up pitiful example of a badly abused and neglected Model 60 when I was about 12 or 13.. I showered it with love, TLC, and Hoppes and 3 in 1 until it came back to life. 40 years later it's still my favorite 22, maybe my favorite gun period. I can still cover 5 shots with a quarter at 50 yards with it. I bet there are thousands if not millions of stories like ours concerning the Model 60. I love Ruger guns but they can keep the 10/22s. In my humble opinion it's the best 22 rifle made for young and old. I never found the need for anything else. Great story, thanks.

I had to have one too and when I was browsing a pawn shop I saw one in dirty condition but noticed it had potential and boy did it ever clean up . It was filthy as u can imagine with so I soaked it in hopes #9 since it works great for barrels and cleaned it decent and shot a few hundred rounds and found out this 1988 Marlin with the 22” barrel and 18 load capacity and bolt hold open was a decent deal. Came home and have it a another real good white glove cleaning and now the insides look new with some wear marks . It’s no longer gritty when using the action but the main thing of this whole spcheel is to let folks know they clean up decent and parts are available if ya get one needing some love and they are pretty accurate . I’m using a 3x9 and 75-100 yds is better than iron sights . It hits the mark and thsts what I care about . Next I ll refinish the stock not caring about original color . It’s going to look better with my finish work if the stock is birch it will look great clear but prob will go gray stain with 2 coats of whitewash and 2 coats crystal clear . 👍👍

Just today I picked up a 1977 Glenfield 60 squirrel stock model in pristine condition with the factory 4x15 Glenfield scope. Even has the original scope caps! Absolutely beautiful rifle and was my white whale in life. Always wanted a new one, but this one is as close as it gets. It will be my Grandsons first rifle and I will teach him to shoot it. Great reflection and story. I was the same way. Got mine at 12, in 1986. Added a scope one year later. Just replaced that scope 2 months ago and rediscovered how accurate they really are. One thing always stands out to me in my recollection of the 6 mos or so leading up to receiving the rifle as a gift...the 10/22 was the more expensive and modern .22 to have. To this day, I've yet seen a 10/22 shoot near as accurate out of the box, much less with a decent optic as my 30 year old, 20,000+ rounds Marlin 60. Never lost a mag either. bwaahahahaha

I have a bunch of .22 rifles in my collection. A .22 and pellet rifle are great guns to use if you want to keep in practice and improve your marksmanship using less expensive ammo. I have always had a soft spot in my head for Marlin 60s. the are handy and accurate rifles that are very reasonably priced. People gush over Ruger 10/22s but out of the box a Marlin will beat them every time. I have one Ruger with the full length stock I picked up from a friend who is no longer with us. It is a nice rifle and fun to shoot, but Marlins are still the best to me.

I bought one in 1978 so my son and I would have something to enjoy together. As he grew into his teen age years he found other things more interesting to do. Girls was one of them. So the Model 60 found its way into the back of a closet. Then in 2012 my brother in law asked me if I wanted to go to the range with him. I hadn't touched a gun in 34 years. That day I was bit by gun fever. I took out the Marlin and cleaned it. Have been shooting it ever since, along with the 14 other guns I have purchased since. The Marlin was used to introduce my wife to shooting and it's the only gun she wants to shoot.

Great gun awesome story mY friend I just purchased a older model today actually I traded a Hatfield semi auto 12 Gage for it for I'm more into small game hunting and wanted less lead TO pick out of the meat. And your story was great reminded me of a few great times with mY father and mY first gun a 4-10 miss that gun also. Thanks friend God Bless

I have one my dad gave me when I was about 10 and I inherited another from my moms dad. They are both a bit finicky about ammo, but are accurate enough to shoot the ring numbers off targets at 50 yards. Is that scope mount the one one with 24 MOA of elevation built in?
@Icarryone5 жыл бұрын
Yes it is but I've since changed it out for a different mount.

Cheers to the fathers who were of the Greatest Generation. I can relate to being taught gun handling from a combat vet. Mine was in the 34th ID during WW2. Unlike you though I have hung on to most of the guns of my youth that my father bought for me. All except for my 870lw youth shotgun. As for my .22 it is a Ruger 10/22. Of course it's evolved, but the receiver and bolt are original. Thanks for telling your story.

Loved your story, I just ordered a new model 60ss, can’t wait for it to arrive. I was just wondering why you preferred to mount your scope so high? Also what kind of scope would you recommend? Thanks and keep us up to date if your wife is tired of those rabbits and squirrels yet?
@Icarryone5 жыл бұрын
Like I said in the video, the scope and mount were some that I already had but were not being used. Since this video, It now has a proper set of rings and a new Nikon scope.

Where can i get a marlin 60 reciever? Their pretty much just cast, my brother was climbing up on some rocks and dropped my gun and the housing receiver cracked.

For what a new receiver would cost you, you would be money ahead to purchase a new rifle.
