While this is pretty funny, we have installed our Toyota-based Dual Case setups into a few Jeeps. The biggest issue as we all know is the wheelbase, but we have some customers with stretched wheelbase Jeeps in the 300 to 400:1 range thanks to Toyota and Marlin Crawler components! (Note: These are highly custom applications and we do not offer any standard kits for this.)

Thank you for the comment and also love that you have an Ultimate! We'd like to add, however, that Triple cases are purely only for bragging rights, showing off, and amazing product demonstrations. Less than 1% of our customers run Triple Cases. Both Marlin and BigMike run Triples in all their rigs because it allows them to showcase all of our available gearing options so potential customers can see first-hand speed differences between each setup (for example: precisely what BigMike was able to do in kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaO1c5Wea5KYfbc). But, if you do go Triples, then yes we know you're gonna love it and impress the hell out of everyone around ya! On our Marlin Crawler Forum we have an unofficial Triple Case club. You just might spot it in the signature and avatar text of some of our members! Happy Crawl'n!

How does this work? Why isn't gravity pullying it down ?
@Kyle-dv8hs6 жыл бұрын
Just curious how does the grade affect oil pressure?
@MarlinCrawlerMedia6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question Kyle. Most production car engines use an oil pan with a sump located beneath the engine. An oil pick-up tube extends to the bottom of the sump where oil is pumped from (in Toyota's case by way of a crescent gear pump). Because a sump is the lowest point of the engine oil reserve, it relies on gravity for oil to accumulate. As the engine is rotated on any axis away from level, the oil shifts away from the sump. If the engine undergoes sufficient tilt, then the oil pick-up tube will no longer be fully submerged in oil resulting in loss of oil pressure. Historically speaking, Toyota low pressure sensors turn on at pressure levels of 5 PSI or lower. Having the warning on is not a concern in this case because the engine is only idling and idling at a greatly reduced load -- in this case a load reduction of 580 times. Generally speaking, engines are designed to operate at 10 PSI oil pressure per 1,000 RPM engine speed, and when an engine is idling at 600 RPM as in the case here, oil pressure of around 5 PSI is perfectly normal. Even when undergoing low pressure, oil is still flowing so there is no concern for damage. Now, if BigMike decided to rev the engine over say 2K RPM for a prolonged period of time with low pressure then there would be a concern. But luckily the who point of Rock Crawling is to Crawl a greatly reduced need for throttle input is a major advantage of the Marlin Crawler (we use torque not speed). The point the video makes is that the slope angle is so severe that it even has caused the oil to run out of the oil pan sump.....and yet the increased acceleration effect do the gravity still makes zero difference on the engine idle speed and traction at this angle when the TacoBox is engaged. 😎
@Msherwood53416 жыл бұрын
light comes on when the oil pickup that sits in the oil pan no longer is sucking in enough oil. At a steep grade like that all the oil moved to the front of the pan leaving the pickup in a dry spot.

Thanks for the comment Mike! Oil pressure 5 PSI or lower is not damaging to an engine at an unloaded idle. Even though oil pressure is low, there is still oil volume moving. Believe us, we have been in extreme angles with zero oil pressure for many a prolonged period of time in both 4cyl and 6cyl Toyota applications running our Dual and Triple Transfer Case products. Because our gearing vastly multiplies torque, we can do very difficult maneuvers all from the safety of a smooth, quiet, low-load idle with very low oil pressures. Happy Crawl'n!
@EvanMoon6 жыл бұрын
Impressive, most impressive (Darth Vader). It seems that every video the vehicle has put in low range and then the taco box is selected on or off. So the taco box cannot be used by it self correct?
@MarlinCrawlerMedia6 жыл бұрын
Excellent question Evan! The TacoBox is a two speed reduction box with neutral that has a High Range of 1.00:1 and a Low Range of either 2.28:1 or 4.70:1 depending on what kit you order. Both are Dual Case setups but the later is what we call the Ultimate or TacoBox Supreme. When the TacoBox is in its 1.00:1 High Range, torque enters and leaves at the same rate of. In this gear you could say it is disabled and the truck drives 100% like factory both on and off-road. The truck has no clue that it exists. This is how we can daily drive our Rock Crawlers. In short, the TacoBox is a separate unit from the transmission and transfer case and can be engaged or disengaged at any time. With the TacoBox, you t/case transforms into a four speed transfer case as follows: (1) TacoBox High + T/Case High = 1.00:1 -- daily driver mode (2) TacoBox High + T/Case Low = Factory off-road capability (3) TacoBox Low + T/Case High = 1.8-times improved off-road capability (4) TacoBox Low + T/Case Low = 4.7-times improved off-road capability (The last two examples using our Dual Ultimate setup) The choice to go as slow and in control as you like is the new choice you have with the TacoBox mode you select!

I don’t quite understand how it still doesn’t push the engine speed up much? In my vehicle going downhill in the lowest gear using engine braking the rpm will be pushed up towards the redline with my feet off the pedals. With this low gearing I would have still expected that, but does the torque applied through the drive train and back into the engine get reduced by the gearing too? Meaning it cannot speed the engine up?
@MarlinCrawlerMedia6 жыл бұрын
Hello cjeam. Herein lies the true power of the Marlin Crawler, and is precisely how Marlin changed the way the world goes off-roading when he created Rock Crawling a quarter of a century ago. The massive difference that a tremendous reduction in gearing makes is unbelievable. If you ever see a Marlin Crawler Turtle sticker on a rig the next time you're on a trail, definitely ask for a demonstration. It is sometimes difficult to understand just how much of an improvement the Marlin Crawler makes until you've truly experienced it for yourself! Side note: Your very last sentence has given us a new solid video demonstration idea that we will do on our next video marketing trip! Thanks!

Hello Gunnar and thank you for the comment! This is correct and why over the years we've made bolt pattern adapters to place our Toyota-based transfer case products in many domestic applications such as behind SM420/465, TH350/400, 700R4, T18, NP435, and AX5/15 GM, Ford, and Chrysler transmissions. The core reason why the Toyota Hilux platform is better than any other production drivetrain for low gearing is because of how its transfer case is uniquely designed with a compact front removable housing containing its low range components. In fact it is the only mass-produced part-time 4WD transfer case with such a design and, combined with the advantageously long wheelbase of a pickup, is why a Toyota was used when Marlin created the hobby and later the industry of Rock Crawling. For more history on the foundation of Rock Crawling, please see our About Us page at www.marlincrawler.com/about Happy Crawl'n from Marlin Crawler!
