People make the most unnecessary, mean-spirited comments on here, I swear. I don't know if anyone noticed, but towards the latter half of the interview, Phil is fidgeting nonstop with his hands. He's an almost 90-year-old man and clearly would rather be somewhere other than a talkshow interview. He's probably grateful that his partner has the energy and speaking ability to power through these sorts of things. People need to stop nitpicking and complaining about other peoples' relationships and worry more about their own.

In a separate interview, Marlo complained that people ask her questions about their relationship, and not him. Listen how Drew asks, she asks both of them, yet she (Marlo) takes over the conversation.
@siiiiiuu73 жыл бұрын
Her complaining about interviewers directing questions solely at her and the fact that she's speaking more in this interview aren't mutually exclusive. He's the more quiet, laid-back one in the relationship and she's the ball of energy. That's their dynamic. And it's clearly worked out.
@siiiiiuu73 жыл бұрын
I just realized which interview you were referring to. In another interview, Marlo complained that she was the only one constantly asked about certain matters pertaining to home life (housework, family, cooking, etc) while they never asked Phil those questions. If this is the interview you're referring to, you completely left out the context of her complaint... which is odd.

These comments... Phil's probably having a day which I have them now and I'm not even 60 and he's 86 and some days you're just not on top of it and his partner picked up the pace for him that's what they do it's not overbearing it's support. Trust me if you know Phil Donahue if he had something to say he would speak up, either he didn't really want to be there or was a little out of it. I only hope I'm that out of it when I'm his age

I think Marlo made some good points, though maybe she was overgeneralizing a bit about "don't marry potential." It's an important hiring strategy to sometimes "take a flyer" on someone, a phrase popularized by "Shark Tank." Principals will often hire someone straight out of teacher's college rather than a veteran teacher. This is also a well tested strategy in sport teams recruiting and hiring athletes, like a "developmental contract" in the UFC.

The best advice is Ali Wentworth's. Women who want happy and devoted husbands should heed it. Patty Smyth's advice is worthless: she met John McEnroe after he had gone to the top of his chosen arena, tennis. Of course she doesn't value "potential." I note that Marlo Thomas "jokes" that if Donahue had made $1 an hour, she would not have dated him. That, apparently, is the secret: make money.

Danny Thomas said on several occasions he called Marlo “Little Miss Independent” from a young age because she was always so sure of herself. On the one hand, it’s great he didn’t squash her independent spirit in the 1940s and 1950s, but she may not have learned how to negotiate with other people’s’ differing opinions very well. Phil may have simply given up trying like Danny did. They both surely loved and respected Marlo, but they knew what they were up against.
