This encapsulates everything I love so deeply about Marlon Williams’ music, the exquisite melancholy and beautiful despair combined with all the charm, style, wit and humour. Existential dread and resignation has never seemed so attractive.

In case anyone was curious...per Google translate.... I am alone To the canoe, To the sea There is no wind It is nothing Look at me Look at me! The mast! I am going away Away I will die in the calm sea I have no hopes It is nothing Anana e Anana e! The mast! I am going away Away I will never return to you again I will never return to your home again I will never return to you again I am alone To the canoe, To the sea There is no wind It is nothing Love me Love me! Got a slightly different one: I am alone In the canoe, On the ocean No wind at all Nothing else Look upon me Look upon me! The outrigger! We set forth now Never mind it all I will die in the calm sea I have no hopes Nothing else Alas, oh dear Alas, oh dear! The outrigger! We set forth now Never mind it all I will never return again to you I will never return again to your home I will never return again to you I will never return again to your home I am alone In the canoe, On the ocean No wind at all Nothing else Have mercy on me Have mercy on me! The outrigger! We set forth now Never mind it all

@JimRMorrison The song is written with some very common Māori phrases/words, which helps make it accessible. For example, "Titiro Mai" is often used by teachers to tell their students "look at me." The phrase "aroha mai" which you have as "have mercy on me" is more literally - love (aroha) towards me (mai) - and is often used as a form of apology. Hopefully listeners might recognise "moana" (ocean) after the film or correctly connect "aroha" to its Hawaiian cousin "aloha."

Beautiful waiata, brought a tear to my eyes reminiscing as a child listening to my poppa, nana, mum, aunties, uncles singing and partying in the garage back in the 80s/90s, all sadly now passed on, thank you for the memory and keeping te Maori culture alive and thriving

Nothing beats the old school garage and house parties back in the day. Brings back so many great memories.🤍 I miss those times dearly. All the best to you and yours.

I will forever thank my thumb for accidentally clicking the Marlon Williams suggestion on Bandcamp in 2016. What a treasure trove! As a Malayo-Polynesian cousin, I'm so proud of you! Pagmamahal mula sa Pilipinas. 🇵🇭

when i saw this song live last year with my whānau, i rushed home to find any recording of it as me and my brother wanted to add it to our waiata list. when i realised it had never been officially released, i used my shaky te reo to transcribe the song for my younger brother to learn on guitar just by listening to the recordings uploaded to youtube. finally i will have the true lyrics haha ♥️

Ive see this gorgeous human live twice, and this song live aswell at his most recent concert in Castlemaine, Victoria Australia. He will never not be one of my favourite all time musicians, and Ive written multiple instrumentals with a similar vibes as his music. He’s such an inspiration to me and maybe family. Love you Marlon, come back to Australia again please!!

That is a very succinct description: "Maori Elvis." : ) No doubt like many others, I had also thought he had a young Elvis-like persona at times .. but the "sweet notes" he hits & his soulfulness is unique.
