​@JimRMorrison The song is written with some very common Māori phrases/words, which helps make it accessible. For example, "Titiro Mai" is often used by teachers to tell their students "look at me." The phrase "aroha mai" which you have as "have mercy on me" is more literally - love (aroha) towards me (mai) - and is often used as a form of apology. Hopefully listeners might recognise "moana" (ocean) after the film or correctly connect "aroha" to its Hawaiian cousin "aloha."
