❤️‍🩹 REALITY CHECK:
I still can’t express how much I enjoyed being in Marrakesh & how it hurt me at the same time! 💔
From the start I felt like I was in a simulation, what I was seeing didn't seem real...The discrepancy between the people that live/work in Marrakesh and the ones traveling there is so big, so unfair...
We don’t have the same reality, the same opportunities, the same freedom... That hurt me so much, it still does...
I can’t say enough about how friendly everyone was, how “at home” they made us feel and how much I learned about their culture! I fell in love with the Maghrebi tea and how it is a sign of hospitality to the ones visiting...Everyone welcomed us in the best way possible!
My goal for the vlogs was to really share all of the essence of Marrakesh & not romanticizing it... Specially in this last vlog, I wanted to share some realness of Marrakesh... Mistreated animals, some of them caged to later be sold and some of them used for all kinds of attractions... We also saw a lot of little children doing adult jobs, for example, while we were having a nice meal and relaxing, these little ones were working in the market carrying stuff that was too much for them... I wanted to share all of that in my vlogs, but it didn't seem fair, it didn't sit well with me... Why would I film and post them without their consent? That's why I decided to write about it instead.
I was constantly feeling guilty in a way...I felt like I was contributing for everything that was happening because we (foreigners) keep going there to have these experiences and enjoying the "attractions"…
Later, I learned that Marrakesh works a lot around the commerce and tourism, and for that to happen they need people to visit the city...Also, I met a lot of Moroccans who told me they learned different languages with the foreigners that were visiting...And let me tell you, they know A LOT of languages! That made me feel less self conscious about it, and a little bit happy that we could offer something in return, but the blaming sentiment was/is still there.
The reality, once again, is that we were very well taken care of! So that's why I've decided to focus on the good things that Marrakesh gave us, understand the bad things also exist and do these videos as a sign of empathy and respect for their culture!
