I've been in the skeptic KZbin space for at least 15 years, and it's nice to see the counter-apologetic atheist/agnostic personalities talk to more critical scholars recently. I had almost given up hope lol.

Yes. Our society desperately needs this access to information. Our ideas of relationships, even among the most progressive of us, are shaped by centuries of a Christian worldview that is largely ignorant of the Bible.

I think part of the issues here especially considering sex acts in ancient biblical times is to consider that what is perceived as normal is very culturally relevant. Sexual norms are highly viewed from the norms of the times. I think in this conversation there are times when we have questions asked about consent that are very 21st century paradigms. Having raised 4 daughters I am very interested in them being safe healthy and fulfilled in their relationships. Having said that, we live in a wildly different world than the ancient near east. What women wanted back then from their lived experience is so different than any woman today. I understand this talk is to highlight ideas that people without seminary degrees never think about, but we need to not forget that it is easy to read our own perspectives into biblical texts. I know the good doctor is not doing that here but untrained arm chair scholars can slip into that very easily without even knowing it.

what we really need to keep in mind is that the authors of these texts simply did not care what women wanted. speculating that maybe they wanted to be treated as sex toys and breeding stock, actually, is also a form of presentism.

@@joshridinger3407 That is true, however, it doesn’t take much consideration to come to that conclusion. Frankly, I don’t personally know anyone I’m texting this information to. I have known many, many people who have lived in other cultures and were brought to the western societies after they lived elsewhere for part of their lives. None of those individuals view sex or their individuation the way we do in America in 2024. It’s not just a generation gap it is a culture gap. Maybe I view this through the lens of being a minority in a culture that often focuses on freedoms that are important while giving less focus to freedoms that matter most to historically marginalized people and their lived experience.

@mykewilliamsdorsey2727 the concept of 'historically marginalized people and theor lived experience' is a postmodern, western, euro-centric lens. viewing ancient sources through such lenses is anachronistic and presentist. it's trivially true that women in patriarchal societies are trained to not value their own freedom, because such societies do not care what women want or consent to. they are things to be used for the purposes of their lords. their lived experiences do not matter.

Would it be fair to say that the only marriage type thing in the Hebrew Bible is the buying of his victim of SA?
@JenniferBirdPhD2 ай бұрын
@@hive_indicator318 Not really. There are many examples of men purchasing women without any SA happening first.
