Ding ding ding! Colonial hangover is indeed the correct answer. Look at other countries in Asia. Like Japan for instance, which is one of the most developed countries in the world. Barely a few people are properly fluent in English over there but no one actually cares. They take pride in their language and do their thing their own way without the need to kowtow to the West like Desis do. But in our society, English has somehow become a status symbol and the barometer by which your worth is judged. Which goes to show just how little we think of ourselves. That we genuinely believe that unless we adopt "the ways of the white men", we're lacking. I mean, obviously it helps to acquire a global language in your arsenal but can we not look down on others for not doing so? You learn as you live and messing up grammar or pronunciation is not a sin, so can we please stop giving people hell over it already? It's just a language after all. (After typing my little rant, I realized I did it entirely in English and irony is lying shooketh in a corner somewhere lmao 🤣) But yes. Upmanyu is hilarious and I appreciated you guys' insights! Keep on keeping on. 😊

It's not wrong that you wrote entire thing in English. It's just you mustn't be ashamed of speaking your mother tongue and you must feel ashamed when you can't speak or write properly. My English is very good but my Hindi is even better and I saw many people taking pride that they can't read Hindi properly which is very disgusting and "A Slave" mentality. It's good that your English is very good but if you aren't fluent in your mother tongue, then it has literally zero value.

@@jinfin221 That's absolutely rubbish. You can't read Hindi properly because you might haven't read it for a long time. Hindi is extremely easy to read in comparison to English because in Hindi whatever you write, you pronounce it in the same way. However, in English there are so many silent alphabets and each alphabet is pronounced differently in different words. Also, Hindi varnamala (alphabets) are arranged in systematically according to how your tongue touches your palate but there is no systematic arrangement of English alphabets. This is the reason why Hindi is called "SCIENTIFIC LANGUAGE".

I have B1 level in French & it's 1 of the worst language interms of logic 😂 In France I did the same. I taught Indian French to my professors & said I am proud of my Marathi accent, so deal with it.

Regarding that discussion on language and pronunciations, I would like to cite an example from the Desi Hiphop scene. There is this thing thats going on since Kr$na and Emiway started beefing , whenever a Emiway fan comments anywhere on youtube, people would reply to them calling them a "chhapri"(I don't really know what this word means) or on the lines of "English seekh ke aa fir baat Karenge" (These are some toxic Kr$na fans I am refering to here). $ fans take proud in that their favourite rapper can kill in both hindi and English and I understand that. KrSna spitting fire in both languages is what makes him so amazing and people in dhh respect him for that but that doesn't mean that people who don't vibe with him or who do not catch his bars are in anyway inferior to those who do. This is the kind of superiority complex that makes me wanna vomit(sorry puke, lol) Again I am only talking about a small percentage of his fanbase who are toxic for some reason. Rest of the awaam ❤ believes in discussing and breaking down bars and respects every artist. P. S. 14:38 it was Raaj Jones who you were talking to

Yeah, so to summarize my thoughts - it is always an asset to know and be fluent in multiple languages; the more you can add to your arsenal, the more people you can connect with, and the more ideas and schools of thought you can understand. It broadens your mind in more ways than just for the purpose of communication. And when learning a language that isn't your own, it's always better to try and perfect the native pronunciation of words (not the accent). And finally, all of this being said, lack of fluency in any language doesn't equal to lack of intelligence, or being less knowledgeable. In the case of rappers, since their work requires them to play with words, switching between languages is an extra tool, one that would give them more to play with to fulfill the requirement of the flow/rhyme scheme they're working with on a track. That is not to say that the ones who use only one single language for their songs are any less equipped. It just depends on the skill of the artist at the end of the day. As for fan comments, lol, no comment.

If you treat it as a language then it's fine but unfortunately it isn't the case in our societies. People consider it a sin, yes if you want to improve something that is good but improving just for the sake of social pressure is absurd, completely rubbish. I wonder why people aren't shy of speaking their mother language wrong, in fact find it cool or cute at times not to be good at it, it just shows the colonized mindset British has left behind.
