This movie was heartbreaking for me. I divorced when my son was 2 years old. I said the EXACT same words to my lawyer as Charlie did to his. “He needs to know that I fought for him!” I almost threw up at every court hearing. The longer our divorce took, the more we hated each other. Both of our lawyers said things we never would have said. The lawyers would chit chat with each other like buddies before and after. I sat there in bewilderment. Now our son is torn between us and he feels guilty for it! “Sorry I have to go to my dad’s.” And there’s nothing I can do to help him but remind him that nothing is his fault, he shouldn’t feel bad for wanting his dad too, and that I love him.

I think the reason the movie focuses on Nicole in that way is because she's the driving force of the divorce, that's not to say that it's her fault but she's pushing for upward momentum and pushing out of what they were. You kinda feel for Charlie's obliviousness but yeah you can see that it's a problem. I feel proper sorry for both.

This seemed fairly unimportant to me at first because I didn't see how it affected his character. Yet the idea of a parent that drinks too much reappears when the lawyer brought up her use of alcohol in court and implies that she's drinking around her kid and then it being brought up again when she's preparing to be interviewed by the observer. It's interesting that its a part of his past and manifests itself as his only fighting chance at arguing why he should have custody and she shouldnt.

One of the things no one has talked about is how this and other divorces spiral in such acrimony that you have to pay lawyers $900/hr to get you what you want; be it a house, bank account or child. If you can't sit down with the person you married and find compromise, then you made the wrong choice in the person you married or the person you married made the wrong choice when they said "yes" to you. It speaks to how cavalier people are towards the contract signed when you enter a marriage. It's for life, better or worse - that's the solemn oath you take. You better be damn sure this is the right person for you or you're setting yourself up for this kind of misery and expense.
@davidmcallister96764 жыл бұрын
I agree, I also hate how the Wifes character evolves thoruhgout the film. Basically she is reserved and unable to voice her real needs with enough insistince to get what she wants until she hires a lawyer and blindsides her husband with a sneaky trap that eventually gets him what she wanted. Cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. At one point he states "forget Henry's college fund". Exactly! you blew your childs future because you could not speak your needs and compromise... but that's ok, its the norm nowadays.
@fangal124 жыл бұрын
@@davidmcallister9676 I would say that he also never took her needs into consideration. He admits that they talked about it many times throughout the marriage but because of his career he never cared how much it meant to her so the only way she could get what she needed was to force his hand. Maybe she could have been more insistent, maybe he could have been more considerate which is what makes this script so good, you can see both sides.
@davidmcallister96764 жыл бұрын
@@fangal12 I agree, at the center you have poor communication with both sides failing to hear the needs of the other. The classic circumstance of one partner feeling resentful for walking away from a career for the sake of child and family. However, as the intro to the movie so cleverly lays out as they were reading letters to their marriage therapist... There was something special there between them and a deep respect for the role they play. They were obviously there to try and heal the marriage and improve this communication. She was the one that walked out emotionally and refused to communicate and then unilaterally decided to end the marriage. Everything she did thereafter was to avoid dealing with the problem directly. They should follow up the film with a sequal in 10 years showing how their child was impacted by this. I get sick of movies pretending like parents chasing their career aspirations over family unity is a noble cause... It's simply not so... That goes for both of them

I think that's what made me feel more for Charlie. Henry is so apathetic towards him, but that's the reality of it. My family is still trying to come into term with my parents' divorce. Both my sister and brother are still very apathetic towards my mom. I was too for a time, until I understood why the divorce had to happen. Kids don't care about adult matters. They only care about how it affects them. You can tell this is the case during the scenes where Charlie brings Henry along with him in search of attorneys. Charlie openly talks about the situation in front of Henry, but the kid's aloof, only reacting when he's inconvenienced.

I think that Driver's character has the most to sympathise with as the story progresses and with the time we spend with him but has the biggest flaws pointed out early on in the movie, therefore providing an equal judgement on both sides of the story for the 2 characters. This review was well explained, had a good perspective on the story, and intelligent viewpoints. Arturo's review very detailed, he noticed how the divorce process changes the child's behaviors. Arturo seems a little to anxious to jump in and interrupt. Zachary explanation is very smart and on spot, wanted him to get more speaking time. Overall good team. Adam driver's performance excellent! Like the way Nora (attorney) enlightened Nicole of just how she has been a doormat to Charlie, so he could get ahead. Noticed how Charlie also provided constructive criticism, and acting opportunities which helped her become a better actress and allowed her to do so much more. The movie helps couples reflect on how two people can love each other, but at the same time, show how lack of support from one partner can break a relationship. Overall the message to me was that each person in the relationship needs to support each other in their craft, compliment each other and don't overshadow or let one's life consumer the other.

The instant he cheated he became unsympathetic, and he was no longer a "good guy". Cheaters aren't "good". He deserved to be left based on that alone, but the fact that he did not listen to what his wife wanted for ten whole years is also more than enough to make him unsympathetic.
@seanmatthewking4 жыл бұрын
Winterinbloom. She was complicit in him not listening. She married a guy who doesn’t listen and let him not listen for ten year. He’s not aware that’s what he’s doing. She was barely aware that’s what he was doing. I don’t blame her for divorcing him if he won’t change, but this movie is about the divorce process, not the marriage. He cheated once after they hadn’t slept together for the past year. That makes it more understandable. It’s still not justified, but we don’t need to be simplistic about it. Again, it’s understandable that she would leave him. What wasn’t justified was going to lawyers. She and he both agreed they wanted to avoid that. They were both stubborn and selfish about which city they wanted to live in, which is understandable on both sides. But she didn’t allow them the opportunity to figure it out together. He should have agreed to living on LA or at least letting the kid live in LA because of how long she made concessions and lived in NY. But she needed to give him time to process the fact that that’s what she was doing all that time. In his head, they were a New York family, and she wasn’t forceful enough during the marriage to make it known her thoughts. He selfishly interpreted her deep reaching thoughts as whimsical thoughts. He needs time to understand he was wrong. Set a deadline to work things out, and after that you can go to lawyers if there’s still disagreement.
@winterinbloom4 жыл бұрын
@@seanmatthewking I wholly disagree about his cheating being understandable in any way. No one has to cheat. A year is a very long time to allow things to go wrong in a marriage without trying to fix them, or at least trying to figure out what went wrong. Cheating is the lazy person's way of getting their base desires fulfilled without having to do the work of either fixing their current relationship, or moving on so they can start a new relationship. I also don't put fault on his wife for him not listening. She was his wife, not his mother, and therefore it was never her job to teach him to not be so incredibly selfish that he disregarded everything she said just because she wasn't forceful in her opinions. And that part of the marriage does play into the divorce process, as the only reason she went to a lawyer in the first place is because he was still not listening, as he'd done for the past ten years. He agreed to no lawyers because he assumed that the divorce would go exactly as he wanted it to go, and he never once thought his wife might have a different view of what life would look like after the papers were signed. She agreed to no lawyers because she obviously wasn't the type to put up a fight, she wanted things to remain amicable, and she probably saw Charlie letting her go to LA and putting their son in school there while she did a show as him listening and being reasonable for once, until it became clear he wasn't. Charlie was treating the show she got involved in as a side hobby to the "vacation" she was taking in LA. She was wanting to actually move there and restart her career, as she'd told him she wanted to do God knows how many times. Charlie was temporarily indulging her so she would be placated and he could go back to having everything his way. You were right, he should have just agreed to move to LA, or come up with some creative half and half solution, but he wouldn't have come to that conclusion given time. Time would have made him do what he did the whole marriage, assume he was right and delude himself into thinking his wife shared all of his opinions even when she directly stated otherwise. He was already doing exactly that when she hired the lawyer.
@seanmatthewking4 жыл бұрын
The harder a relationship is, the more understandable cheating is. You can deny that if you want, but I would argue you’re not being generous enough with your empathy. It’s still not justified, and there are always better options. Being understandable and being justified are two separate things. “She was his wife, not his mother, and therefore it was never her job to teach him to not be so incredibly selfish that he disregarded everything she said“ Sure it’s not _her job,_ but if you care about the relationship you can try. And if you’re unsuccessful, you leave the relationship. But if you choose to remain in a relationship with someone who doesn’t treat you right, you are complicit in that behavior. They are both flawed. He doesn’t listen, she doesn’t know how to stand up for herself.

Remember how she agreed to cooperate with a mediator and then turned around and called her husband and the mediator cock suckers? Did you notice how Charlie assumed he'd stay at G-ma's house (with his son) during the first visit but Nicole pretty much said 'no' go to this hotel that's not too expensive? And because she decided to get a lawyer, it forced Charlie to spend his first day in LA with his son trying to find a lawyer that Nicole didn't already go to. Not only that, but it's clear that Nicole was poisoning their son against Charlie at this point. It's not just a "mommy phase". Henry literally clings to his mom's arm when Charlie tries to take him for the first day. Compare that with the opening shots of the movie where we see Henry want to have Charlie sleep in his bed after he has a nightmare. I wonder what that's about? And remember how Charlie was going to spend time with his kid on Halloween but Nicole said, "Nope. We're going to Pasadena and you can't come" before slamming the door shut?
