This is very helpful information. People need the know how and the discipline to win in life. These stories of the people who did at a very young age were probably people who had the benefit of safe and stable families. Many people do not have that advantage.

That's very true. Those youthful examples most definitely had homes with parents teaching the importance of generational wealth and financial literacy. All we can do is start where we are today with the knowledge we have. 1% improvement is possible.

I make quite a bit but honestly live off 60k pretax quite comfortably. Got a car with a payment and a 280k now 450k home with a low monthly payment. Most my money goes to retirement to catch up. But the real impact was simply learning to live on less.

The jump in numbers from the 2022 video make this feel impossible 😭. Estimated 220k by 30 in 2022 and 330k by 30 in 2024.

I understand how you feel! I use 7% instead of 6% -- but honestly, these are all just educated guesses. No one can truly predict the future of the stock market. I'd recommend checking out our Coast FIRE calculator in the pinned comment to get more specific on your numbers.

I love the idea of coast fire as I’d love to someday be able to step away from my high pay, high stress job and pursue something more in line with my passions. We’re ~ 60% of the way there as of right now (late 30s), but are well over 100% if you include the net worth we have tied up in rental real estate.

@@MarriageKidsandMoney I'd like to get our stock investments up to ~80-90% of our coast FIRE number before I step down. Plus, we have some larger expenses related to our ten-acre homestead that we want to tackle before we take a reduction in income. So likely looking at another 5-10 years depending on how things pan out.

Can you add a field in your calculator for fixed income? Such as pensions, disability, etc
@MarriageKidsandMoney
@MarriageKidsandMoney 2 ай бұрын
This is an excellent suggestion! I'm wondering about the verbiage for that field. I'd like to add project social security payments (at 75-80% of what is projected on SSA.gov) as well as rental property income, etc.

Is there a way to calculate coast fire number if you have rental real estate income as well?
@MarriageKidsandMoney

For a quick way (not perfect math) ... use our pinned calculator calculate your annual expenses subtract annual rental income (after accounting for expenses, taxes, etc) and that could be your new annual expense number That should improve your Coast FIRE results!

And what happens if future returns are much lower than past but you could have still retired if you kept contributing instead of coast firing
@MarriageKidsandMoney

Truth right there! No one knows what future returns will be for certain. Find a balance that works. Perhaps decreasing contributions instead of stopping makes the most sense for you.

330k at 30 is a meme. Increase the 6% compound rate to 10% and all you need at age 30 is 85k. If you wanted to meet in the middle and say 8% then you need 160k

The 6% rate accounting for inflation is reasonable.
@decki86

Maybe should be conservative and set 80k expense with inflation adjusted for the different age group? Or is it already adjusted for inflation ? The 80k will take a hit on purchasing power the longer time u wait for age 62 retirement

Already adjusted for inflation, but again, these are broad estimates and truly guesses at that. It's best to work with a financial professional who knows your situation best.
